Title: Marie Felling Tug Towing
Post by: monarch on August 23, 2009, 03:40:55 pm
Hi All
Does anyone use a Marie Felling Tug for towing, If so can you please help.  I have been thinking about the fixing of the towing hook for some time now but have not reached any sensible conclusion yet.  The present hook is fixed to the superstructure need I say any more.  I know that I will need to fix a cross brace on the hull below the present hook area but this is where I'm stuck.
Can someone help with details or better still some pic's would be great.

Thanks all
Lionel      :embarrassed:

Hi Lionel,  this is the way my superstructure is secured for towing on my Canning.......
2 small blocks of wood are fixed to the top of the front coaming, underneath the superstructure there is a lip at the bottom and the lip slides under the 2 blocks on the coaming. The superstructure is then placed front first over the coaming and slid back into place over the rear coaming. At the rear the superstructure is secured with 2 small brass pins that go through the superstructure and into the coaming.
You must make sure the coaming is very well secured and re-enforced and it wil tow without any fear of lifting the superstructure.
I have towed 2 blokes in a rowing boat around Llanberis last year with no problems.

The pics might make it clearer......

Hi Mark
Thanks, I had'nt thought to secure the supersctructure.  Did you use the original towing hook? this has the traditional hook with lift up arms that clip over the rope section.

Hi Lionel, no I didn't use the original tow hook because it was a seriously poor quality white metal casting, (would say it was cr@p but it wasn't that good!!!) and would not have been strong enough anyway!!! So I fabricated my own from steel which is alot stronger (it held a 56lb weight suspended from the ceiling without breaking!!!)
