Hi all , i,m new here and have a problem with a speed controller i bought from China, I connected it as the instructions but it only ran the motor for about 10 seconds and then stopped, the rudder works still, I,m wondering about the working voltage, i connected it to a sealed lead acid battery 12 volts 3.2 a/h the specs say its working voltage is5-10 cells 6-12volt NiCD,Nimh Li-po battery, are the 5-10 cell batteries the rechargable packs and if so have i blown my speed controller

It is unlikely to be because your battery is over voltage! 10 times NiCd or NiMh batteries are 12volts. Your 12 volt SLA would be around 13.5v if newly charged, but unlikely that would be enough to blow the ESC. What about your Rx battery?

reciever battery fine and if i put 12 volts to the motor it spins ok, when i test the speed controller i don't get any voltage going out to the motor when i push the throttle forward on the transmitter. I have opened the speed controller and nothing looks burnt out. I have got a fair bit of electronics knowlede but this is the first boat i've built up.

Is there anything about "re-setting" the control on the destruction sheet?
If not disconnect everything and start again, (leave it a couple of minutes).
Also try swapping the channels in the receiver.
Turn the Tx on first then the Rx.
Turn on the Rx first then the Tx.
Dems the usual tricks....!

Anything in the destructions about voltage cut-off for lipo?

You mention a Rx battery as well as the 12v SLA. I seem to think that these particular things are equipped with BEC, in which case you're applying two different voltages to the receiver simultaneously......................double-plus ungood. See if you're getting a voltage across the black and red wires from the ESC to the Rx plug (around 5v) when it's connected only to the main battery; if so, it has a regulator fitted.
BTW don't take that 110A figure as its continuous rating - it's probably more like 20A continuous and 110A peak.

Thanks for all the ideas, tried it first just using the cable to the rx and it powered it ok, only afterwards did i supply seperate power, also nothing in the instructions about resetting and there is no reset pin either, have tried powering up different ways also moved steering to ch2 on rx and it works so can only assume esc must be blown.

Have just checked the spec of the esc and it has 5v/1amp BEC, low batt cut off 5v and the continuos load current is 110a forward and 40a reverse

You dont need a seperate Rx supply, looks like FLJ was right.
Suggest you buy an ACTion speed controller, more efficient and you get excellent service and after sales service plus 5% discount as a Mayhem member.
