Hi guy`s,
I wonder if anyone out there in Mayhem land can help....I recently bought a second hand glassfibre hull that had the framework glued in using an impact adhesive.
The framework just fell off but the glue has stuck pretty damned good to the hull >:-o
Can anyone tell me what to use to remove it?

Hi Bri,
We use acetone when working with impact adhesive - certianly works with wet/dry adhesive, dont know about old stale glue!

Acetone attacks glass fibre though <:(

I was worried about anything that might attack the glassfibre....
but I do have some acetone lying around so I might just give it a go on a small section O0

Try an oill based product like white spirit or parrafin, it will not affect glassfibre but as the glue is oil based, it will eventually turn it rubbery again and will make it easy to remove. Leave it to soak if it's old and hard as it will take time. If it's in a place where you can't make the fluid pool around the glue, soak a rag in fliud and drape it or bunch it up over the glue area and leave it... it will soften the glue eventually. Petrol works better but it's smelly and highly flammable of course but it works...... Ive done it before.

I would use white spirit, give the hull a good wash afterwards as it can leave an oily residue. Have the rag or cloth really soaked in white spirit otherwise you will find you spread the old adhesive around without actually removing it. Remember to wear gloves it aint good for your skin

Tried the acetone and it `s taken some of the thin stuff off ok2
I`ve got the feeling if I use too much, it will soften the resin so I`ll try the white spirit next O0

Assuming the impact adhesive is Evostick or similar
Evostick is Neoprene rubber in a very light solvent - but not quite as light as acetone
things which dissolve Evostick and should not worry a fibreglass hull
lighter fluid - certainly works - since this is what we use to dilute evostik to apply mylar to planes
Petrol - same reasoning
cellulose thinner/nail varnish remover
NOT at the same time - you might try a hair-dryer carefully - it should really soften the adhesive enough to roll it off
