Nothing new there, any recession hits shipping and the surplus tonnage lays up for a while until the markets improve.
About 15 yrs ago there were loads of tankers (all full) laid up in Scottish Lochs waiting for the price of crude to increase.
This is of course worse in a global recession.

I also read this article. Interesting. Especially the comment by the "reporter" re the "fastening of rivets the size of dustbin lids". That comment alone got me to wondering how much else of the article was true. Tried "Google Earth" and found a few ships...but nothing on the scale that was suggested, but perhaps the pic was a bit out of date. The 2 container ships that were highlighted....aren't they also owned by the outfit owning the thing that broke up in the Channel a couple of years ago? Perhaps there are other reasons behind the article. BY.

Speaking of "Google Earth"....While looking for pics of the ex "Smiths" repair yard I noticed a little clock on the top toolbar. Turns out to be a historical record of the pics of what you are looking at going back to year 2001. Really fascinating to see how much in the world has changed during the past 8 years or so. Also, the difference in quality between the older postings and the new ones is almost unbelievable. Give it a try! Cheers. BY.

from looking at the pictures I dont think there is enough tonnage to claim to be larger than the us naval fleet or the British fleet our MSC ships alone come close to this you add them in with regular navy ships and there is no way. he may be going off just numbers but if you count every thing that can float tied up there you would need to count every floating craft the navy has US or British. That is an errie sight though and I would not want to be one of the lone sailors left to protect a ship like that.
