:-)) Hello again.
Can anyone advise me on correct paint colours for a 1916 Insect Class River Gunboat please? %)
I see White Ensign Models do a good range but i don't know which is the correct grey for hull and decks or red for below water {:-{ would there also be a black stripe between the grey and red?

Not sure about the shade of grey. I do most of mine with grey primer.
Red oxide primer is good below water line.
No black stripe.
Sorry I cant be of more help.

This will depend mainly on when and where you want your model to represent. On the China station in peacetime, for instance, the boat would probably have been all white with buff funnels. In the Mediterranean most likely light grey, probably AP507C.
The Insect class were used in the Mediterranean during WWII, and may well have had one of the unofficial schemes used there.
Try trawling sites such as http://www.photoship.co.uk/ and

Lots of good pictures here:

Hard to tell but suggests that the Tigris boats were painted a pale grey, paler than most primers. No idea about the decks, but many ships of this era had them covered with Corticene, a lino like material. The colour of this is often described as milk chocolate.

Ref the deck of "Insects", in Kemp's book "Gunboats of the Royal Navy", page 35, there is a photograph of an officer leaving Tarantula (starboard side, just forward of the funnels, I think) which shows the upper deck as being planked.
I thought these ships generally had plated upper decks? Anyone any ideas?

{:-{ Most of the pics are from the 30's I think when they were in China, they had planked decks at this period but I don't know about earlier.
There is a pic of Cockchafer in 1917 supposedly

Ii can't tell though {:-{ I think they were mebbe refitted in 1920 before going out there {:-{
just planning ahead, I have it just steel plates at the moment on the main deck.
Been trying to find a copy of that book :((

For that period, the very light grey would most likely have been #1 Grey, which is Colourcoats GW 01 here at White Ensign Models.
