Title: Lesro Magnum
Post by: das boot on October 03, 2009, 09:13:02 am
What's in the box?

A very full box of bits...hull/deck/hatch mouldings in very good quality styrene, already trimmed and ready to fit together. A bag containing rx aerial tube, propshaft and prop, a bag containing all the internal mouldings for the servos, battery boxes, rudder linkages and ball joints, nice brass rudder and tube, a tube of styrene adhesive and a bag of instruction sheets and decals. There's even a moulded boat stand included in the kit.

IMHO...although there's no motor included, the kit is very good value for money. Sandra at Lesro looked after me very well, I received constant communications as my order was being processed, and Lesro gave me a very good deal.

Rich,

Just do not ask for advice as to what might be the best motor!!! {-) %%

They might start all over again and you will very possibly have that attack!!! <:(

Morning Ron,

Once bitten, twice shy mate!  ok2
I have a Tamiya 540 motor coming for the boat, and an eight cell nicad pack is on order as well. I'll try it with that, and then see about changing the motor later if I feel the need....

Flexi drives? Brushless motors? Water cooled thingies?  <*< <*< >>:-( <*< <*<

Well everything certainly use usable, nice to see a strong (Huco) coupling in there too.
Micro switch motor control?!!? ....  Haven't seen that for a few years.
( I'd round off the lower corners of the rudder for safety reasons! )
Nice brushless in there would be good.... I wonder if something like this would suffice?

Back to sanity(Martin...go away!!!) <*<

Made a start on the dry fit of a few bits, Tamiya motor, rudder and arm, radio switch, rudder servo and rx in temporary positions just to make sure things fit ok.

So far, so good...

Done a bit more today(inbetween watching the MotoGP and the F1(boring)...got the water cooling inlet/outlet pipes installed and changed the rudder linkage.

Tuesday PM update...

The top and bottom hull sections are now glued up. Instead of using plastic solvent, I used silicone sealant to give me a certain amount of flexibility when joining the two halves and also to give me an easier ride. I also added some pieces of closed cell foam, siliconed into place up in the bows for bouyancy...just in case. At the same time I siliconed the prop shaft and rudder tube/water cooling inlet pipe into position.

The flat now stinks of vinegar.... >:-o

Use the BEC on the ESC, it will be fine on the voltage you're running, and with only one servo to pull round.

Wonder where the bec is on the microswitch speed control? :P

He is using one with an electric fir built in keep the lake warm , it saves you standing around all day sailing as they waste most of the power heating up..but a bec on flea bay no weight and about £5

AFAIK, Richard is using an ESC, not a microswitch. You'd have to be mad to use the latter on a fast electric these days surely?

A linear regulator is not going to get very hot dropping a couple of volts and powering one servo. Switchmode BEC's are great, especially for submarines or a boat running a high voltage (over 12 volts), but I see no benefit in forking out for another gadget when you have an adequate device built in already.

My heat comments where about resistor speed controllers not bec's as I thought that was what he had.

I'm building this more or less from the box chaps, I have added water cooling admittedly, but that's about the only deviation from the kit plans. I'm not getting into circuit racing with it, so the instructions say battery pack on the right, so that's where I've put it.

As for bec's and such stuff...no thanks, far too technical for me and this boat.

It's what they sue for a warp drive in Star Trek, Richard. Martin is pulling your leg.

Nothing technical about BEC's I assure you, just plug and play. It can't get any simpler, and you only have the one battery pack to worry about.

In the sub Andy....yes, but not in this little fella. This purely for fun after work, just until the Dragonfish is ready for operational duty.

Martin, old chap.. %)..you'll be pleased to learn that the Magnum has been moved from the top of the wardrobe onto the slipway, just ordered the rest of the bits I need from CMB to complete it. Final fitting out will commence next week.

See...you've stirred me into action!!!   {-)

For Martin...pretty stickers!! Looks a wee bit better now. The bits to finish it should be here during the week, CMB are always very rapid in getting stuff to the customer, so with a bit of luck it should be ready to go next weekend.

Ok, I suppose you are all wondering as to what happened to the Magnum...you were wondering, weren't you? Of course you were... %)

The first water trials were an unmitigated disaster, I'm ashamed to say  <:(  The adhesive properties of council silicone sealant and Lesro styrene are non-existant, coupled with the heat from the motor, caused the top to separate from the hull, which wasn't part of the plan. Back to the drawing board, cap in hand...

I never could get on with the inner hull moulding, the motor sat too high, the motor mount was pretty useless and the whole thing just got in the way, so I took a craft knife to it, ran the blade around the top edge and removed the whole lot. Much better, much more room to fit a decent motor mount, the motor and the prop shaft sit a lot lower in the hull, the water cooling pipes fit better and the internal access is vastly improved. When it's completed I'll just use a flat styrene sheet taped down as a top cover.

The pic shows the new look Magnum with the motor sat in the hull awaiting the watercooled motor mount and the watercooling motor tube to arrive. I plan on using ten cells to run the boat, they will sit in two boxes made from styrene sheet and held down with velcro to allow them to be positioned to get the CofG right. The motor is a 'hot' Tamiya 540, the rudder is a cut down micro one from ebay and the watercooling pipes are alloy tubing.

That's how is it at the moment...

Got a day off work today, so got a bit more done to the boat...made up the motor mount, swapped the coupling over, rudder hooked up, rudder servo installed and the watercooling inlet pipe done.

I'd give that chocolate block the elbow if I was you. They're not the best thing for carrying high current. Get some deans plugs- inexpensive and bulletproof.

Fear not Andy, it's only there to hold the wires together...once wired up properly, I have several sets of gold-plated bullet connectors which will be used.

Bit more done, got all the watercooling pipes installed, made up a little bracket to support the water inlet pipe and to keep it out of harm's way and stop it getting hooked up in the rudder linkage.

The motor is now fitted with a proper coupling, and is fitted into the modified motor mount. It sits much lower in the hull than Lesro planned it to be.

Just waiting on the water cooling coil to be made up now, then I can attach the pipes. Next job is to make up the battery securing trays and attach the velcro to hold them down in the hull.

Nothing much done today as yet. The 40mhz rx arrived today from BB, so just stuck the velcro pads for the rx into place, on the opposite side to the rudder servo. Doesn't really warrant a pic...does it.

Had a few promising ideas for the material for the hatch cover, so really that will be the next job..oh, and the antennae pipe.

Looking good Rich, just a thought though, I would add some extra supports to the motor mount (longitudinally) as you might get probs there with vibration cracking the joint.

I was thinking of adding a couple triangular supports each side of the mount Phil...as you say, just to give it that little bit extra support.

Got the motor watercooling coil made up and fitted and the water pipes hooked up, but I only had room for three turns of pipe around the motor.  {:-{..fingers crossed that will be enough.

Bought some 1/16th alloy tubing off ebay, and being as it's a slightly smaller diameter, it should allow me to get a few more turns on the motor.

Sorry fellas, didn't see these two posts until just now...

I made three watercooling coils and abandoned every one due to design or manufacturing faults (or in other words I naffed  each one up in one way or another!) However, a cunning plan has been formulated...see pic below.

I haven't glued the two halves together as yet until everything is finished inside, it makes for easier installation of everything. One the w/cooling ring is fitted, there's just the battery packs to install and wire in...and that's it.

I'll take some more pics later on when it gets light.
