Title: Dogs
Post by: Pointy on November 22, 2006, 07:15:37 pm
Do we have any dog owners browsing the forums tonight?

Yeah I know this ain't' "Dogpages" but curious to know if you can juggle your hobby (which requires a lot of time) with caring for a dog. Does your dog get jealous of your boats? I mean there you are all ready to go out and you reach for the boat and not the dog lead..... "GRRRR!" thinks Mr Woofy, and "I'm going to pee on that tonight!"

What kind of dog(s) do you have and why? I will let you into a secret- I don't have a dog but would love one. But of course I live with people who are more into their things than dogs (oh my God think of the furniture- are you mad?! etc...) :'(

If it was up to me I'd go get a couple of rescue greyhounds. Its all rather ironic, here I am expecting delievery of a ARTR Graupner Prinz Eugen tomorrow which I've been after all year and sure wasn't cheap and am I excited? Hell no, I'd swap it in seconds for some kind of non-dog lover conversion thingy. :-\

I have a 16 year-old Jack Russell Terrier and although I am a model boat fanatic, when push comes to shove, she, ( the dog, of course), takes precedence.   Pete

I have a dog, it's a stuffed toy with spots which goes under the name of Meazle. Wife and daughters love it - no trouble at all. Doesn't eat, doesn't pee, doesn't.... well, you know.  Perfect pet. Actually I prefer cats.  :)

Ever since Carol and I got married in 1980, we've always had dogs, mostly rough collies (Lassie dogs), some 'rougher' than others  ;D ;D, but all real characters.  Our last two went about 7 years ago and I miss them terribly.  Our lifestyle has changed with taking over the business, and it wouldn't be fair to take on any more - at least until I retire.

The problem these days is that dog owners are considered to be anti-social, and to be honest, I wouldn't fancy following a dog around with a 'poop scoop' and a plastic bag, even on long walks way out in the countryside.

Rescue Greyhounds are lovely animals as are all dogs, and it's something I would seriously consider myself.  Becoming a Guide Dog trainer is something else I would love to do.

Dogs love you and are faithful friends regardless of who or what you are, they don't compromise.

Regards,

Malc

We have a Rottweiler bitch, just under 2 yrs old.
She has a very strong personality but is soft as butter, till a stranger upsets her!!
She often lays in the Garage with me when I am building.
No conflict between "Tia" or models.

Hi Pointy

Here is our Whippet called Scout. Dare I say, the best dog to have    ;D

Reasons

1   No hair loss around the place
2   Most loving and loyal  of pets
3   Keeps the joints supple with all the walking
4   Only needs a small pooper scooper
5   Eats medium size meals
6   Keeps me Alive....
7   Keeps away from water
8   Very delicate around model boats

I have a two yr chocolate labradour called Rolo, as with most Labs he is very docile, gentle and is very good company. Never any problems with the boats.

I have a nutty black lab, the pic is her a couple of months ago at 12 months. She sits in the garage or wanders around the garden when I am doing boaty stuff.

Laserblue, your dog has such a sweet face! hey boatmadman I bet that black lab keeps  you smiling! And Tug... what can I say- I'm biased towards greyhounds so maybe thats why Scouts' pic made me melt. Rolo- what else could you call a chocolate Lab! ;D

Hi all,

I've got a German shepherd called Sam.

I spent three years fitting out a steel yacht shell in my garden. He would either sit in the garden watching my efforts, or climb up the ladder and come aboard. He grew up with the boat and all that went with it, no problems or jealousy. This was also whilst I was building various model boats when the weather was to bad to work outside.

The great day eventually came, and he was left at home while the boat was trailed to the marina and launched.
A couple of days later family and dog drove to the boat, loaded all the required items on board and set sail.
It was about here the trouble started, he barked, howled, scratched at the varnish and generally made it a disaster area. After two days with no sleep we arrived back at the moorings and the dog was returned home in disgrace. Despite several more efforts, we gave up trying to take Sam with us, which  meant kennels for him, which was not acceptable to me. ( to expensive as well)

After three years of not using the boat, it was sold on.

I now spend most of my time with model boats, and leave him at home while I go to the pond. Sadly he does not travel well in cars, and so misses a lot of great days out. He does get a three mile or so walk along the beach every morning, well I walk three miles, he does about six or seven.

We have a Curly Coated Retriever called "Holly". She is seven years old, very large, very strong but amazingly gentle and utterly loyal. She sees me start to get my tools out and goes to sleep! However, when I go sailing she goes with me and first has a walk. When I start to sail she gets bored and goes and sits by the car.

Curlies are not a well known breed, especially in France where I am constantly asked if she is a Labrador/Poodle cross. This makes Holly and I mad! Dog owning in France generally consists of two approaches. 1. Conceited little balls of fluff (orange Poodles or Yorkies) which are walked for 10 minutes by a lady in ridiculous high heeled boots or an embarrassed man who attempts to pretend the dog is not with him. 2. Hunting dogs such as St. Hubert's or Brittany Spaniels which are penned up most of the time but are then let loose and hunt anything from a mouse or lizard to a deer or wild boar. The shooting that goes on here in the Vendee with dogs is a huge problem for me because Holly does not like guns (despite the breed having  been raised to recover ducks from water after a shoot) and I am afraid to wander far when a hunt is in progress. So would you be if, as I have, you saw the huntsman liberally refreshing themselves with alcohol at each opportunity.

My wife is unable to walk far and so Holly and I do a lot of walking alone which is good for my heart (after major surgery in 1999), good for the peace and good for Holly.

Pooper Scoopers are unknown in France but ticks are a huge problem in the spring. I have taken as many as five ticks off Holly in one day. Deer ticks are the worse but they hang around rabbit holes and in long grass. I have even had them in my legs. This year there was a notice in a local forest car park advising long trousers tucked into socks as the tics were so prolific. I treat Holly with "Front Line" every month but can't get my wife to put it on my back!

Comes with me sailing sometimes and is no trouble.

Like Colin, I much prefer pussy to canine! Especially the sleek black furry variety that sleeps on my bed on occasional weekends when my son goes down country. So this post is about CATS! Tough!

Even though my house is not his home, he knows exactly where his tray will be. He also sits and watches me working on my models/painting figures etc., and I usually pull a chair up next to mine for him. The only problem is that he's banned from the railway room.... furry pussy (and associated dropped hairs or even fur balls God forbid!) and intricate Bachmann and Hornby locos don't go too well together. So I find him sitting outside that particular room with a 'so why can't I go in here then?' sort of expression on his face.... honestly, you would think I didn't trust him!

The worst bit is when its time to take him home.... can I get him to go in his carry basket? Of course I can't! At the first idea its time to go in 'there', he's off.... and the chase around the house is on!

I am always particulary amused by the look of absolute disdain that cats give to dogs (usually from a position of total security, mind you - such as the bedroom window for example!) To me it epitomises the sheer superiority that cats hold over the canine. After all the Egyptians worshipped them didn't they? They certainly knew a thing or two about pussy!

I  am not a domesticated animal lover - wildlife yes, but cats and dogs, no.

Cats crap on my lawn, prowl round my pond and terrorise the frogs. The only thing in their favour is they occasionally scare off a marauding duck.

If I really wanted to walk the streets collecting warm dog crap in a plastic bag, I'd save money, cut out the middle-man(dog?) and let someone else feed and house the thing.

Yes i do Richard, I think everyone who intentionally hijacks any threads should be immediately moderated and then thrown off the Forum....  ;)

I did however mention DOGS in my post, but refrained from mentioning how noisy, smelly, stupid, aggressive and downright dangerous they can be.... one came straight through a window at me (glass shards everywhere!) and bit me on my b*m, when i was helping my uncle deliver milk many years ago....  :o

I was at the time tip-toeing through the said dog's turds in the back yard trying to deliver a pinta when it took an instant fancy to having a chunk out of my a**e end! I think it must have said afterwards... (if it could talk of course!) 'Window?? WHAT bloody window!)  ;D

After that experience I can't say I love 'em......!  >:(  Imagine how poor old Mr/Mrs Posty feels!

One of the funniest things  I saw ( dogs + full size boats) was when we were moored in a bay and a smallish ( 23/24 ft boat) sailed in. The owners plus their Old English Sheepdog piled into their dinghy and went ashore.  When they returned the tide had gone out and the water was about waist deep round their boat so they put the dog in the dinghy and waded out pulling the dinghy behind them.

When they were about 6 feet from the yacht the dog made an almighty leap towards the deck but missed and disappeared under the water with a huge splash. The owner, now thoroughly soaked lifted the dog up onto the deck and he and his wife followed. Of course the dog then tried to dry itself by shaking. Can you imagine how much sea water came out of the very shaggy coat of an Old English Sheepdog ?  It was like a tropical rainstorm with nowhere for the unfortunate couple to get away from it. :D

Boxers! Best dogs in the world!
I took mine out with me the last time I ran my hydro. She charged up and down the edge of the lake every time it went past. Got soaking wet through. I think she'll stay at home when I go sailing again.
I can understand some people not liking to see dog muck here and there when they are going for a walk, but the way some people go on about it, you'd think dogs do nothing but take dumps every few paces. I was berated by one numpty who complained about the amount of dog muck near a local lake left, no doubt, by dogs owned by people like me. The lakeside was in fact covered (and I mean covered!) in an extensive carpet of wildfowl crapola.

Both are bitches and the children adore them. Sandie used to come out with me when I was a Sales Rep and sometimes i think ht ecustomers preffered to see her than me  ;D Photos attached of the adorable and not so adorable, I'll let you decide which.

cheers

They are both adorable in their own way Hamish! Dicky D, GSDs rock, whats his name? Roger, I've only ever seen one curly haird lab and they are as rare as they are beautiful. As for the dog poo question, well as with everything its up to the owner to get rid of it in a responisible manor and yes if that means carrying around bags of the stuff on a walk well so be it- I'm sure the dogs company would be worth it. I don't mind cats, very sweet in their own way but a little to independent for me. ;)

Keep telling me about your four legged friends!

Chris, what on earth do you mean?? Cats must be the cleanest pets known to man, whereas Dogs are among the dirtiest, slobberiest(?) and smelliest - 2nd only to Komodo dragons!

Plus, I've just spent 20 minutes watching that Dog Borstal TV programme - Good God, what IS all that about! A dog who is seriously threatening the life of an unborn child, but the owners are still prepared to give it house room!!!  ??? How crazy is this world... and they call that entertainment as well!  :o

Now I think I must have seen and heard just about everything. Yours truly, with gob thoroughly smacked!!  ;D

I prefer dogs, but my mate's wife has 2 cats.
Ruined the 3 piece suite, living room and hall carpet by sharpening claws.
If you want a dog that looks at strangers with distain get a rottie.
Mine isnt huge, but she has such a strong personality.
cats train the owners, but dogs can be trained to behave as you want.
Rotties got bad press recently, but they were trained a guard dogs.
Tia is a great family pet.

Just remember the wise words of my oriental gran "Dog is not just for Clistmas, wiv a little care, dey be some left for boxing day."
The koreans have the right idea - roasted with veg.

I'm with Rick, animals are great in the wild, around here we must be the only ones without some form of pet, cats roam all over, messing in the flower beds, killing the wee birds. And dogs barking and whining because the owners have come in from work and chucked them out in the garden.

Dogs,  I like the assortment my wife has. Nice and cute, small, cuddly and no trouble at all. They sit in a wicker basket all day, and night, and don't make a sound.  Toy :) dogs are great.

My brother and I had a Spaniel when we were kids.  The novelty soon wore off.  Now I wouldn't want the bother of owning a dog.
I would feel a right Pratt being led around the streets and then trying to look invisible while the brown stuff was being ejected.

A major problem, which friends and relatives have often found out, is trying to get someone to look after them when going on holiday.  Not many people want to know these days.

Give me the toy one's anytime.   Still, each to his own.                                                                                                               PS.  I think my wife might have some pussy's as well.  ::)

A little different, here's my Grosser Schweizer Sennenhund or alternatively a Great Swiss Mountain Dog. Now 8, same age as my daughter. Big, friendly and protective but kids can do just about anything with her.
As regards the the cat/dog debate, we also have a cat, nothing like seeing the two of them curled up asleep together.
Which do I prefer? Well I'm a dog person, had them all my life except in the RM and when travelling. When I first moved here my wife had two so it didn't take long to get into the plastic bag routine. At the most we have had three, German Shepherd, Dachshund and a Jack Russel, that could get lively at times!!!

POINTY..... just a minor correction. A Curly Coated Retriever is not "....a curly Labrador...". The Curly is a pure breed which pre-dates Labs. and Goldens. They come in solid black or solid liver only, as both colours are dominant there are no mixtures or markings of any sort. Their face is smooth and typical of a retriever but the rest of the body is covered in small, tight curls. They seldom bark (mine dislikes our auto gates!). They are one man's dog but simply avoid other humans and dogs if they can, no aggression.

Anyhow, I think that is enough about dogs on a Model Boat Forum, it had not been my intention to prolong this thread but I had to protect the Curly image!

Hi guys,

Hey Seaspray is it true Staffys like people but not other dogs? If so what is it like walking both of them with other dogs around? How long can you leave them alone for? I walked some Greyhounds for the first time today at a kennels. I enjoyed it but the dogs seemed sad somehow, didn't respond at all when I stroked them.

They love people and hate other dogs.Mum is ok as she is mature him is like most males up for anything. But you train them and I've only one coommand word which is No. and it works. They walk all day unfortunately I have two that pull all the time while walking There called the nanny dog as they are great with kids Again its how you train and bring them up. Try no to leave them alone for long but there is a flap on the back door and a six foot high fence around the garden. They don't like rain either

Richard,
Arent we going slightly "off topic".
I would feel happier pm'ing you about sailing etc, is that ok?

Bob
Is "going off topic" loosing the thread, or is it the "art of interesting conversation."

P.S. I've got two English Mastiffs. Just to keep the thread going, sort of thing.

At least with a dog when you call it, it comes to you, but cats usually look at you with contempt and walk there own way and ignore you....
Reminds me I need a new pair of slippers soon, two less cats.......... :o :o

Have a 4.5 yr. old Welsh Mountain Pony! Took this aft. off and took him for a swim in the sea - far far too windy for boats on lakes, but doesn't stop a pony sailing well on the seal!!!! ;D - he likes swimming!

Hi Guys.
My wife and I share our lives with a beautiful black lab named Monty ( If I new how to post pictures on the forum I would) Monty is a P.A.T. dog and when I survived a stroke in 2003 he was with me all the way.
Monty taught me to walk in a straight line again by nudging me into line with his back end and didn't mind one bit as I practised my speech therapy exercises on him. For some months after the stroke he would lie across my feet whenever I sat down, I guess he wanted to know instantly if I moved.
He loves to meet people and reacts well with dogs, cats, children etc. The only creature he chases are squirrels and of course he has no bloody chance there.

He is a star. If it was him or the boats then the boats would go.

Cheers
Clegg

Hello all, well it has been a long time since I last posted. We've been rather busy since moving home and if anyone is wondering where this is going it is relevent to dogs. As I posted last year we had two dogs. Sadly when we decided to move home the wee Westie had to be rehomed. Moving to a rural location would you'd have thought been ideal. Sadly no Millie has been rehomed in a nice quiet suburban area where there are no sheep, cattle, fowl or rabbits to chase. Had we brought her with us it would almost certaainly have been signing a death warrant. Farmers can be over protective of beasts and some would say justifiably so. Basically we thought it better to settle Millie and take the subdued lab with us. Now we are on the lookout for a rescue lab which we know will be more bidable.

On the lookout

cheers

Jim

Frankie,

Within 6 months we had another dog, this time a Black lab. Getting another dog was the best thing we did. We deliberately got a different breed to avoid comparison.

Frankie:  You have my condolences. About three years ago, just before Christmas, I had to put my Golden down. Comet was 14, a good innings for the breed, but he was in pain. The interesting part is my Border Collie, who was two years at the time, only came out of her kennel for barn and evening field chores for three days after Comet went. She hardly eat anything during that time. Two weeks later she took over the old boys favourite spot by the sofa that he had kept to himself. Now she's top dog. Animals feel the pain of loss as much as humans.

Know exactly how you feel Frankie, i had a fox terrier for 14 years took him every where except work. For a while after he passed on still  used to call him to get in car. That was 30 years ago but still remember like yesterday the laughs and experiences whilst out fishing or just strolling around the hedge rows. Have a 10 year old std staffie now, a big strong lad, if i get the lead out looks as if to say is the car broke fatty.Loves nothing better than digging holes out the back. I ignored him while playing with mini helicopter once , he caught it taking off bit it in half  almost i thought half his teeth would come out when he got it.Also sqashed hovercraft once chases it now. Swmbo has a cavalier spaniel all i can say about him lovely dog active friendly great fun when out real comedian and its a good job the props not turning when he finds my  boats yes very friendly indeed.

Sorry for your loss franki,
We have lost 3 in under a year, Snoopy our son's dog with us from 8 wks left with us after Jnr moved out. Pete my pal saved from needle at age 4 both went one day apart to old age sept '07 both 14 yrs and Little Sheba had her from 6weeks, An absolute treasure travelled every where on Jo's (wife) knee on her mobility scooter, is  missed by hundreds of passers by she brought a huge smile to on shopping trips the decision to put her to sleep was the most heart wrenching we've ever had to make. She was 14y 10mths it was especially hard as she looked well but had Pancreatic cancer. She was the last of 6 dogs we've had over 21yrs, it is so quiet and lonely with out her demands for attention, food & a cuddle, out of habit i still put my plate on the floor when i'm finished.
I feel for anyone who has lost a MATE.

This was our old Yorkie named Bonnie..she was nearly seven when we got her from Raystede Rescue Centre, near Lewes, and she lived until she was 17. She took over the house completely, she used to know when ex-wife was about to have an epileptic fit and would warn her by jumping onto her lap and shaking herself, she guarded her when they were out and about, even bit a hoodie when he tried taking the keys from her electric wheelchair...she hated cats with a passion( O0)and ate better than I did.
She's been gone some few years now, but is still sorely missed by the both of us.

RIP Bonnie, you earned it...

Dicky,

I also have had the unfortunate experience of having to put several dogs down, so I know the pain that your are feeling. Believe it or not the best thing that I have found is go out and get a new companion. You will never forget them but the new one will take your mind off of the pain because you have one next to you with all of it trials, pleasures and love. O0   So march your self down to the local humane society or dog pound or what ever it is called in your neck of the woods and get your self a new companion.

Hi Dicky, I hope you have fun with your springer - I have had two over the years - they are great dogs
but totally bonkers and usually very loyal.  Ex-wife No2 had just finished a baking session and had put an
apple pie, pineapple upsidedown cake and a chocolate sponge to cool on the kitchen bench - he couldnt
reach them all but he managed to eat the front half of all of them before we found out then was very sick.
He will definitely kieep you on your toes.  We are looking for a nice young border collie from the rescue
centre to replace our old collie Hamish who died a few months ago aged 18yrs. He was the craftiest
dog I ever had and frightened of nothing except our huge cat.  Have fun.

Hi Richard,

Glad to see you have a new day-time companion. Somewhat different to you, but my dog is my reason for going out each day, otherwise the knee I messed up three years ago could have left me crippled - dog walks every day made me go out and exercise, not only the dog, but also my knee. Wouldn't be without a dog, life would be so boring.

These two are mine and Number 6's babies.  We had them both from the dogs home 2 years ago.  The one on the right we named Kim and the little one on the left is named Joycie or Jo Jo for short, after my mum.  He's even named one of his boats after little Jo Jo.

Well, no fear of water for this one now, I suppose falling into our model boat pond when he was 14 weeks old cured his fear of water. Now he's going through the terrible 2s and thinks he's boss of everyone, funny he's fast asleep at my feet now.

Well I have taken the plunge and got another dog.

Not exactly a German Shepherd but will keep me company during the day and he follows the wife round the rest of the time.

At least he's not too small, or wont be when he grows up.

Dicky,

Way to go, what a nice looking pup. Have fun, enjoy. I am so happy for you.

Hi Dicky,

Hard to replace, but he looks a handful, whats he called. I know a few from the beach and their absolutely mad.

I'll have to venture over your way this winter and pay you a visit, don't worry I'd leave the wolf at home, he's going through the dominance thing.

Me alpha dog mate, I buy the food.

You are welcome to pop over anytime Robert, but my wife says you have to bring the wolf.

She's had a thing about him since he was a pup.

My lunatic dog is called Jack among other things and at the moment seems intent on bringing everything in from the garden and taking the household stuff out into the garden. I'm knackered !!

Very pleased for you Dicky, I have a working Cocker, Sophie she will 6 in November. Loves the water, they say that they calm down then, no sign of that yet, helps the wife gardening, digs up everthing she plants.

All the best Mick

POINTY..... just a minor correction.

When all said and done, their just Pot Lickers like the rest of them and as for not being aggressive, all dogs have aggression in them, its the nature of the beast,

There was once a time when,if a "pure bred"was caught by a Pot licker, you ended up with a cross breed, that was worth nowt,..but now "cross breeds"cost an arm and a leg,e.g. Labradoodle Jackadoodle I even saw a Curlydoodle advertised,
As for pure breds, well like all mutts there ancestors were of the wolf family,so really is there such a thing as a pure bred,I think not,
btw,I,ve got a pot licker, a cross Beardie Border,

My dear old Curly Coated Retriever "Holly" is coming to the end of her days. Her back legs are going and she is having difficulty breathing. The Vet and I are keeping a close eye on her, it will be a very sad day when the inevitable end arrives.

Lyn and I have started thinking about having two smaller dogs. At the moment top of the list is the Lakeland Terrier closely followed by the Cairn Terrier. Any advice? We have considered but rejected a rescued dog.

It is very easy to find Cairns in France but Lakelands are few and far between. I have researched importing pups from the UK but it looks prohibitive because of the time needed for injections and documentation.

To aid your giving advice: large garden 8,000 sq. m.; fully fenced to 1.5 m.; deep countryside; plenty of local wildlife from rabbits through to sanglier (wild pigs) and deer; I walk a great deal; many lakes and rivers around us; not keen on grooming; prefer a smaller breed this time; must travel well including by ship and through the Tunnel..

Any terrier needs a certain amount of grooming
They don't moult so they need a haircut every 6 to eight weeks.
Have you considered a Wire haired Fox Terrier same size as a
Lakeland and maybe easier to get in France

How about a Border Terrier,
Short coats easy maintenance, will run all day and having 2 one will chase and excercise the other. and very faithful.

Isn't interesting that we take for granted that putting an ailing pet to sleep to spare it unnecessary suffering is the merciful and correct thing to do even though the animal has no say in the matter yet when it comes to a beloved relative in a similar situation who is able to express their wishes it's a different story altogether.  {:-{

I wholeheartedly agree with you Colin,my late  Grandmother suffered a slow painful death,in the1960,s at a time when medical science, was not as it is now,..Like you say, had it been a pet,in similar circumstances, then the law would have us do the right thing,..put it out of its misery,...

I recently had to have my dog scoober put down after she was run over in her own garden, sat in her usual place during the summer at the front drive gates when a young bloke decides to use my driveway to turn round, only he turned in too fast and hit the gates knocking one of them down onto the dog crushing her. She had to be put to sleep the next day. As for the bloke he was given 6 pts and had to pay all the vets fees and pay to put my gates and posts back up.

14 years i had had scoober,i remember the day i got her like it was yesterday, a friend wanted me to take her to the local animal sanctuary for a cat, whilst there i went looking round the dogs ( never really been a dog person) and saw something that totally astounded me, a white dog, just a heinz57 dog nowt special covered from head to foot in what looked like lard wearing one of those head guard things, on reading the note on the door she was 12 months old and called scoober oh and the lard was in fat somekinda cream to cover cigarette burns over her back tail and legs.
She was bad tempered and hated people, eventually i tempted her to come to the door of the kennel she was in, as soon as i touched her she rolled over with her feet up in the air.that was it a few weeks later she came home with me.

As I previously said in an earlier post,we have a cross Beardie/Border,my wife and I were more into cats, but on one occasion 5 years ago, whilst having a discussion about pets in general, she said that her favourite breed was a Beardie Collie, with this info firmly loaded into my memory bank,i decided to find her,her favourite dog,As luck would have it,.It was in the run upto Christmas 2005,I saw an ad in our local paper,"Beardie collie pup for sale,I phoned the number, and, was told that the pup was a 10 month old Beardie, but there were no papers for her,I was not put off by this, and decided to go and have a look,
I tavelled 40 miles to a very rural location,Hill Farm in the lower Highlands,On arriving there,in the bleakness of winter, with snow covering the ground,I met the farmer, who showed me Bess, she was from the outset, a very friendly dog,and she looked like a Beardie,..but young dogs can be decieving {-)I asked why she was for sale, and the farmer told me that she had been bought as a working dog,..but had refused to work,?when iasked him to explain he proceeded to open the gate of the field full of sheep, and let Bess in,She ran after the sheep and lay down on her back and tried to engage them in her play,
As much as i liked her,I was unsure as i,d never had a dog before,I asked the farmer if i could come back the next day with my wife,..The farmer said,"Oh,she might be dead by then"I said "what do you mean" he said that as she refused to work, she was no good to him and she was costing him money for food, and that if no one bought her, he would put a bullet in her head,I said "I,ll take her"and duly paid him the asking price,
On arriving home Avril fell instantly in love with Bess, and we have had her for 5 years this Dec,
but as i said earlier, young dogs can be decieving,as she got older,we started to realise that she was not a pure bred Beardie,..she was a cross Beardie/Border,..did it matter to us,Not one bit,..we love her to bits and she does,nt have a bad bone in her body, and given the chance, she would lick you to death, she rarely barks, and loves water, and when we go to the beach which we can see from our house, she is in the water at every opportuinity,As you can see my photographic skills are like my boat building skills, {-)

Wullie, many years ago now, I had a similar experience; ad in paper, border collie for sale, drove 40 miles from one side of Edinburgh to the other, farm where this scruffy little mutt couldn't care less about sheep, farmer said he'd shoot her the next day if I didn't take her. Border collies were not recognised by the Kennel Club in those days, but got her papers from the International Sheep Dog Society. When I asked about price, he said "Same as I paid for her, £7" Needless to say, I took her, spent loadsa money at the vets getting her back to decent health, and she was great. She gave me many years of devotion, was a great companion, and she guarded my car like no other and I've had dogs all my life. Bless you, Dot!

What is it about,Collie dogs, and cars,or any 4 wheeled vehicles,we have a farm road immediatly behind our cottage, during the day we keep Bess in the enclosed back yard, but when a tractor appears on the road, she goes balistic,No barking mind you, just running the length of the yard or trying to jump over the wall, she must run dozens of miles per day,Her favourite passtime though is watching TV,she sits in her basket, and whenever any animal comes on the TV,her Border ears are up and she stares intently at whatever animal it is,occasionally she will utter a low growl, but she never barks, and when she meets other dogs, she is initially very subserviant, but after a little while she will give as good as she gets,..but never a bark,

Wullie
