RFA Grey Rover arrived in Liverpool today fro scrapping, apparently the Navy gets £2000 off a new ship for the next few months.

She was one of the early ones built in the mid 1970s during Wilsons "white hot technology" phase, compounded by having mad "Wedgie" in charge of it all. The Ruston engines proved to be "unfit for purpose" and were replaced at vast expense (by you).
Nonetheless the early "Rovers" have soldiered on for over 30 years and gave great service to the RN all over the world. They were probably OK at conception, but although they looked great the class was rapidly made sort of obsolescent by "events". I believe that most of her sisters have been "sold on" to other countries....so "Grey" must have been the runt of the litter. Time to put the old lady to sleep. BY.

Shame to see her go, I deployed to the windies with her, Plymouth, Falmouth & the crazy Y in the eighties.
