so which would you choose and why ?
Regards Andy :-))

Been with BT all the time and any problems have been sorted out extremely efficiently by their customer services and IT support, though these have been few.
Not the cheapest but I am very happy with them. :-))

my better half is with bt she thinks because we live next door to the exchange we get faster broad band than some one up the road im not going to tell her thats wrong .. christmas is just around the corner regiment ps not forgetting my birthday 5 december

I think you'll find she is right... the shorter the line the faster the connection.
I'm as far as you can get from my exchange, any further and I'd be as far as you can get from the next one... :((
If only I'd known in 1968 when I bought the house.....

I WILL NOT TELL HER WILL NEVER HEAR THE LAST OF IT REGIMENT

The father in law lives about 200 yards from his exchange and has trouble getting 4 meg speeds , yet his friend half a mile further away gets 6 meg . the thing is the father in law is with orange and his mate is with BT :o Orange sucks.
Oh and there is a company just down the road from him (P A Listings) who get over 8 meg constantly , but they pay a bit more O0 .
As for the original question if your happy with sky stick , if not then a change could be for the better . Check to see what each company can offer , and go for what suits you best .If after you have signed up they cant supply you with what they prommised you can switch as they will be in breach of contract , i tried that with mine and they dropped the charges until they had fixed the prob (it took them over 12 months :D ) .

Sky is the worst broadband company, by a very, very, very long way.
I would go Virgin Fibre optic if it were my choice. Either way between Sky and BT you're going to end up with an awful BT line anyway...
For what Sky charge us, this is abysmal...

By the way I'm not 150 miles from Milton Keynes, about 35ish
Virgin's offering:

Cor blimey you lot don't know you are born!!! :o :o :o :o
Down here in the sunshine, we have a company called Iberbanda, who charge us 45 euros a month, which is about 40 quid in English and all we get is a speed of about a quarter meg. Oh and no other choices that offer quicker for less... {:-{ {:-{ {:-{

Ah, but you got plenty of money anyway, Barry! O0
I've just signed up with BT for my internet, should be hooked up by Wednesday I'm told. I'm about a mile from the nearest exchange, so they tell me. I'll report back as and when...

Remember it's the length of cable, which generally follow main roads, and unless you are on fibre you are using the same cable to the exchange whoever you are with.
Difference in speed then comes down to how many customers your particular providers share their equipment with in the exchange.

Andy said that Sky was the worst Broadband provider by a very very long way.
Sorry mate, you have obviously never tried Orange!
If you fancy an afternoon's entertainment try Googling "Orange problems" - on the other hand life's too short!!
Dave.

Report it again. Assuming that you have done the sensible thing and proved that the problem is off your premises, they can test and fix it. Following your last report, they should have said when it would be fixed, and rung to check. If they "rang while you were out", and you didn't say anything, the assumption would be that whatever they had done was effective. Is it a BT contract, or a BT line that you pay somebody else's accounts department to use?
-
Its a bt line and contract, they admit its a fault on the box outside the house, even when i pick up the phone it crackles like a good un, ive reported it three times so far, i get the standard response that someone will come out to have a look

Next time you prod them, ask about the compensation scheme. I don't know if its still active, but it lets them know you mean business. Complain by letter. Do it on the PC. This lets you append copies should anything "go astray". Make a log. To date, it will be from memory, but any further contact should be logged.
I don't know if having one supplier for everything is as good an idea as it once was - as a recent example, my No 2 son had a problem with his phone (Sky) and duly reported it. The usual tests were done, indicating a line fault. The Openreach man was there later the same day. Due to the weather and the site, he needed a buddy with a hoist, but it was fixed by 8.30 the morning after. It could be that once a problem is pinpointed to BT plant, the large corporate customers such as Talktalk and Sky have the ability to chase it more effectively than an individual can.

I wouldnt believe everything you read from speed test sites;
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/638444306.png)
Im actually achieving about 5.4MB/s download. ISP is adsl24 and Im on their 30 gig non LLU service.
The best way to view your broadband speed is via your router interface. You must be hard wired to the router, not wireless.
Oh, and I live about 105 miles from Birmingham too!

Yes it does get it wrong occasionally, it can't always be correct can it? {:-{
