Title: I just do not believe it!
Post by: Big Ada on November 29, 2009, 01:15:53 pm
Went to Asda, they had wooly gloves for £1.00 a pair, took them to the " George " counter and handed over £1.00, the girl swiped them through the Bar Code machine, oh! they are 75p she said and looked puzzled, whats the problem I said, she said I dont know how much change to give you !, I head to tell her, 25p.

What is this Country coming to if people are leaving school not being able to do simple arithmatic, and what sort of interview are Employers putting new candidates through.

Schools cannot take all the blame, parents should help out.

Len.

The most worrying thing is that there were probably a hundred applicants for that job - and she was the best.

I get the impression that some parents opted out a long time ago (and probably their parents before them) :((.  As the saying goes, I am convinced that this country (and possibly the whole world) is going to hell on a handcart :(( :(( :((.  I sincerely hope I am wrong.  I am nearing the end of my life span but I hate to think what the effect will be on my one and only grandson :(( :(( :(( :((.  I used to be an optimist but there is no longer anything to be optimistic about.  However, my glass is still (hopefully) 'half full' ok2

look at the way children are taught in schools, The system we were taught by (learning tables etc and simple maths) is non existant. My daughter (11 years old) could not follow how to do multiplication of fractions. I looked at her homework with my wife (a teaching assistant) Neither of us could understand what was going on by their examples. I sat down had a talk with my daughter, showed her how I was taught, then she got how to do it. I then got a letter from the school saying that the homework was marked down as she did not do the working out how she should have. When I went to see the teacher in question, they were rude and abrupt and said in no uncertain terms that my daughter had to do it their way. It was not until I got the head of year involved and then dropped the bomb shell that I was a parent Governor at another school that they started to listen. When I asked the teacher to do the same homework my daughter had done his way against me doing ny way, I finishe 15 mins ahead of him with all the workings out shown at 100% correct, where he only got 75% correct!!!
upshot of this was, the head conceeded thAT MY WAY WAS EASIER TO UNDERSTAND( He had not seen that way done)_ faster and more accurate, and that as long as the answer was correct, the teacher MUST mark as such!

We, as a society, are being dragged down to the lowest common denominator.

The Roman emperors kept their own plebs happy on a diet of bread and circuses.................does McD's and X-Factor seem somehow familiar?

Being served by dunces can have it's benefits.
I was in our local Safeway a couple of years ago when there was a power fault on all the tills. The cashiers were stumped as nothing has a price on and if it had they couldn't add up.
The manager told them to get the customer to guesstimate what was in their trolley's/baskets.
Needless to say I collared a boatload of grub about half price.
A very Happy Shopper.

While travelling on a Cross Channel Ferry my wife and I decided to have lunch in the Restaurant. As the served meals were so big, we asked if the assistant, a young lady of middle 20s, if she could cut the Pie in two parts, 1\3 and 2\3s on seperate plates. she said "Of course" and stood there, I asked what the problem was and she said she didn't know what 1\3rd was.!! Seems they didn't teach her fractions in school. Our Grandson, who is 11 could tell the time with the normal clockface, only digital clocks.(He can now!!) Never learnt it in school, when I asked the teacher why, she said that it isn't in the new curriculum! Hey ho!

I went to buy something from Argos a couple of weeks back, they asked for my birthdate. I told them 6th Jan 1992. Two girls standing there, one couldn't work it out and the other thought I was 16  {:-{

So how old are you  {-) {-) {-) {-)

I was thrown out of a chip shop a couple of weeks back. The girl was hysterical and i think the owner thought i was taking the mick ! The reason - my food came to £5.49, i handed her a £10 note and a 50p piece and said to her you can keep the penny, but i`ll take the fiver back !
