Title: British motor tramp RAMON DE LARRINAGA, 1954 - 1976. 32'=1"
Post by: Positive on December 07, 2009, 02:18:59 pm
With the new computer up and running, I can now return to something less stressful, miniature shipbuilding!
Today, I prepared the plans and selected the timber for the RAMON DE LARRINAGA at 32'=1"
It is to be a full-hull model, mounted on two brass pedestals and I expect it will take between 30 to 40 days to complete.

I don't know how this thread got duplicated.    Can a moderator delete one of them please?

As soon as I started this thread again (because both the originals disappeared), one of the first ones re-appeared again!      Modern technology!

ahh, modern technology!

From the photo in the book it looks like a very shapely ship.

I agree, it was a clean and uncomplicated design that was quite pleasing to the eye.    Here is a photograph of the sister ship ADAMANDIOS (Formerly RICHARD DE LARRINAGA) that I took at Port Elizabeth, South Africa, 40 years or so ago.

I was able to get a bit of work done outside today as the rain kept away.     I use spare copies of the plans as templates so that I know everything is the correct size and shape.

Lovely traditional lines, she will make a very attractive model.  Shge reminds me of some of the old Palm Line vessels that you could see along the dock road in Liverpool when I was there at college in the seventies.

I do think these small scale static models make very attractive pieces, especially of vessels that you may have had some connection to in the past.  Thanks for posting this thread, I'm looking forward to watching this one progress.

By the way I've deleted the other thread.

Thanks, don't know how it got duplicated, must have pushed the wrong button or something!      There seemed to be literally hundreds of similar ships around in the 50s, 60s and 70s and then suddenly, they were all gone!     Quite unpopular as subjects of models, but I am pleased to see the high degree of interest by the viewing figures.

May I ask' what type of wood' you are using, please. Is it a close grain hardwood or softwood.?

Had you thought of enlarging the photos of the ship (to be the same as the plans), to aid comparison?

Watching with interest.

Ken

Hi Ken,
It is obeche.     Very nice to work, not too hard, not too soft.       The photographs are all at angles, so not much point in enlarging them to the size of model.   As I have printed the plans at the correct scale, there is no need to anyway!

Thanks for that, Bob.    :-))

My reason for asking was that I now have a Band saw and will be cutting wood to my sizes  (at last !) and I'm a bit ignorant of wood types.

I shall be looking around for suitable timber that will cut smooth and be suitable for our hobby.

Cheers

Ken

Christmas preparations and bad weather slowed me down a lot, but yesterday, I compleeted the five cargo hatches and small tonnage hatch.    More hull shaping will have to wait for better weather as I always do that outisde.   It doesn't have to be warm, but it does have to be dry.

I have been battling on two fronts lately.   The weather is keeping me inside, preventing me shaping the hull and working on the display case.       I also seem to have worn my lather chuck out ofter 36 years.        Today I managed to turn my miniature deck machinery for RAMON DEL LARRINAGA, but what an effort.!   I have received help in another section of MBM in the possible procurement of a replacement chuck.
During the afternoon, I assembled all the bits and painted them, but too dark to photograph at the moment.      Winches, windlass, ventilators, windlass, compasses, capstans.

They are not made to watchmakers precision I am afraid, but they look OK in miniatures.   I have now assembled and painted all the bits & pieces, but the snow is still preventing me from hull shaping outside - too cold.

The weather finally relented and allowed me to work outside yesterday and this morning. Consequently, I have done a lot of hull shaping and cut the basic accommodation block. Progress will be a lot faster now as I have already completed a lots of deck details whilst I was confined inside the house during ice and snow.     Have also installed heater inside shed!

I have now made quite a lot of progress, but there is still a long way to go with the fine details.

More fine detail has now been added although this is not immediately obvious unless you compare the two photographs above.    Deck rails have been fitted around the forecastle and decks.    The funnel has been fitted permanently and the tall cowl ventilators on the boat-deck.    The engine-room skylight has been made and fitted.    The aft deckhouse and top, complete with side stanchions has also been fitted.   The lifeboats have been completed and are in position on the boat deck.   The weather again eased up today, allowing me to varnish the inner base and display case woodwork.

Further fine detail includes anchor cables to the windlass, ladders, more rails, small items on top of wheelhouse.     The spare propeller is to be fitted to top of aft deckhouse.    The driving propeller will be the last thing to be fitted to the hull, although it has already been made.   This is because it is a delicate item, prone to damage.

I have now made and painted the masts and all the derricks.   They are not yet fixed in position and I can take them out whilst I return to the final items of deck furniture.    After that is completed, the masts and derricks will go back in and I will complete the rigging.       There is still some varnish work to do on the base when the weather dries up.

Thanks.
Today began bright, sunny and mild, so I took the opportunity of working outside and completed the display case.    I also completed all the outside work on the carrying case.      From now on, the weather cannot delay me and I am within hours of completion of RAMON DE LARRINAGA.

I worked very hard on it today, putting in 4.3 hours!     The ship is now complete apart from the rigging.      Tomorrow morning, I hope to complete the rigging forward of the funnel.   During the afternoon, I hope to complete the rigging aft of the funnel and then mount the completed model on the waiting base.
After that, I intend to take a break from it all for three weeks.    I have a lot of tidying up to do as well as some writing to catch up on.     At the moment, feeling a bit weary.    Am about to go and have a glass or two of vino and watch another episode of "Lost" (Season 5, Christmas present from wife).
Too dark to take a photograph of model at the moment.

Almost done now!
I have completed the rigging forward of the funnel.   The next task is to rig the lifeboat davits and then proceed to rig the mainmast and derricks.     The ship itself should be completed late this afternoon.     I expect it will be too dark to take pictures by then, but, all being well, they will be posted tomorrow!
