Well, that's Global Warming for you....

It has dumped 2" so far here in Stevenage.
I have got to be in Woodford (Manchester) by 8 am . Me thinks I will look out of the window @ 4.30 and go back to bed if it lays any more down tonight.
-
A light dusting so far here in Sussex. Tomorrow looks like the worst day with up to 8" forecast for west Kent, right where I'm supposed to be working - right out in the sticks - all day. :(( I may also wake up, look out of the window and then decide to go back to bed!
A day off, sure, but not so good when you're self employed. <:( <:(
-
Here we go again - a wee bit snow south of the Humber and suddenly Civilisation As We Know It comes to a halt.
What would you do if you lived in a country where it really snowed? I have seen elderly Norwegian women with skis on their zimmers making light of snow and ice and you lot can't get out of bed!!! >:-o

Nothing here in Norfolk yet, had a bit of sleet between Norwich and Yarmouth today but it's just dark cold and wet right now .
I think it's our turn tomorrow, don't know if I'll make it to work though, I might get snowed in between my house and the workshop 5 yards away!! :}

Blimey he's doing well, he delivered my post this morning. :-))
-
Why were our schools never shut when we were kids.
4 mile walk to school in knee high snow every year and the teachers did the same. Think it was called dedication or something.
-
Dicky, After all those years without street lighting the snow was a bit of a godsend. But while wearing school uniform short trousers was not very pleasant. I recall it was also impossible to make snowballs while wearing woollen gloves. Red knees, frozen hands and wet feet. Followed by a wide necked bottle of frozen solid milk (the sort with a cardboard top and a hole to punch out to insert a straw).
But making hugely long "slides" made up for all that, and any injuries weren't felt until the body had warmed up.....and than everything just hurt a lot. But thats the way it was for everyone, so it was the "norm". Other things come to mind, like having to use an outside netty, shovelling half a ton of coal into the coalhouse from where it had been dumped in the back lane. Chimneys regularly going on fire and filling the house with god-awful stink. But it was the "norm", and so the same for everybody....at least it was in the coal mining areas of Durham during the 1940s.......not forgetting the gas lights and associated "mantles". The "playgrounds" that were the local council rubbish tips. And yet we survived, and even managed to pass the 11 plus to get into a Grammar School! That was life. BY.
-
Had to have a look at your profile Bryan, to see how old you are as you reminded me of so many things that I remember as 5 year old going to school from Hett Mill and a year or two later from Spennymoor, both in Co. Durham :-)). Must admit though, you are a bit younger than me ;).
Derek.

I can remember the shorts, woollen gloves and frozen milk Bryan, but shovelling coal and gas lights. Just how old are you and Derek ? {:-{

Dicky, you and Colin should be ashamed of yourselves. Just because you live in the land of everlasting honey you forget about the poor mites with Rickets, and so were unable to squirm up the flues.
But on a more serious note, in those days TB, Scarlet Fever, Polio, Diptheria and a few other things decimated the kids. I was lucky. I still remember after all these years what it was like to lose some of my friends. No NHS when I was a little lad. This isn't a rant.....more of a reminder of what it was like during the mid 1940s for people who hadn't any money.
Perhaps it's an apposite time of the year to remember and possibly recall those days. Bryan Young.

A traditional outdoor Christmas decoration and a child's delight
Ohh I remember now. I have not seen it in 40 years. I remember going out and playing in it in 1970 around the time I went to school in the dark and came home in the dark and had to wear shorts back in Fetcham before seeing the light of emigration. Now in Australia we do have snow but that is just used to intice the young to the ski slopes with an excuse to consume large amounts of booze. Sunny day max 28c possable storm to cool of the afternoon, I think I'll put the airconditioner on and emit some green house gasses to help warm you guys up. Just doing my part {-) {-) {-)

SNOW?? Whats that??
It's that stuff that brings all south of the Humber to a halt, sends BBC London into reporting overdrive, brings the PM to declare a "National" emergency and causes mass skiving while the locals gaze at the sky in bemusement.
Everywhere else, folks note that it's winter time and get on with life.
Bah humbug!

Well, it's been snowing here alright.... done my property the world of good... two car impacts within half an hour of each other and one of them drove off leaving the scene , completely oblivious as to whether they had killed or mained anyone! In fairness, she did come back 6 hours later and confess to it, but as I pointed out, behaving in such an irresponsible manner could possibly have found herself in the dock on a manslaughter charge.... we had a witness and a car reg number!
-
So we can assume that your house sits in a precarious position,or is it more a case of people not reading the road conditions better,...but as you say, no one was injured, lucky for you,and yours, perhaps a big steel bollard or two anchored 6ft down in front of this area might help,

Wassly, looking at the pics of the tank in the snow you have inspired me to take out my Hen-long tiger tank out in the snow -or I might even try it out on our frozen boating lake in the morning -just popping out to the garage to charge the batteries right now ! >
Thanks for the inspiration :-)) Paul.
-
Hi Paul good for you,..can i just point out,the Y goes in the middle, and lose one of the S,better still use Wullie it might be easier, {-)
Wullie
-
Hi Wasyl, yes you're right, we are adjacent to the road on a bend and on the outside of the curve at that.
We have sustained this kind of thing on a few occasions, most drive off leaving the mess. In this instance it was simply that they had driven off the cleared area and into the snow at the verge in an effort to make room for a passing vehicle. I did the self same thing last winter but as I had moderated my speed, the results were far less devastating and the damage easily rectifiable.
The reason I install these panels is because they are easily replaced but in this instance I am now considering a brick wall... a very substantial one. It may get damaged and be more difficult and expensive to repair, but at least there is a good chance the cars won't be in a fit state to drive away and I can get some compensation for my damage... provided they are insured of course.
Provided no-one gets injured and the damage is paid for, I will sleep soundly in my bed.
Take care out there, this kind of accident is commonplace.
-
Living right on the east coast of the UK we don't get too much in the way of snow. In fact the last time it fell so heavily here was when my 17 y.o. daughter was 4!
I'm like a little kid in a sweet shop! O0 {-)

-
Hi Paul, The Teegers looking good, sometimes i wish i,d stayed with the smaller scale,as they are so easy to transport,
The ship in my profile is a Fleetscale 1/128 Scharnhorst, running all three props she also has a mixer fitted which when used on a turn gives better manoeuvrability
Wullie,

Rex and Simba , Nice Pictures.

3 of a kind,if at first you don,t succeed,try, try,then try again
Wullie
-
In Stevenage, they never bothered to grit after the second round of snow, so everything has turned to ice, we've just had the third lot and out come the gritting trucks, just as it started raining. The grit has all now washed down the hills into the new snow which has produced a nice brown sludge all over the roads. My dad went off to the dentists this afternoon (about a mile round trip) and on his way back he saw 7 crashes, slid sideways round roundabouts at 5mph and saw one car get stuck on top of a sleeping policeman...
-
Bill, three pictures of the same snow doesn't make it 3 times as deep %)

I dont think there are many places that dont have snow at the moment.
We had about a foot of it the other day. Took the 4x4 and went to work.
Father in law got a bit more, only 60 odd mile further south they got two to three feet of it. Lucky for him he had a few days off!
A shipbuilder freind in Jutland lives on a farm in the middle of nowhere. They were snowed in for two days. It took them that long to clear the 200m driveway. six foot drifts!
Looks like we might get a white christmas this year.

Yep, just been watching the gridlock in Aberdeen caused by the snow. Moved it south of the Humber have they ? %)
-
Don't believe everything you see on the news. The point is that we just accept snow as a natural event to be expected in winter, we prepare for it and then get on with our lives. What we don't do is treat it as some completely unprecedented disaster and then run around like headless chickens when the odd flake drops on the garden.
Aberdeen also has a large expatriate community - many from the Deep, Deep, Sooth - and thus suffers the problem these excitable souls create by dashing out unprepared and clogging up the roads. The locals have more sense. ;D

stoke on trent has had about 1 inch, and thats only on places. Gritters came out AFTER the snow

Finnish rules on snow days.... If its above the wing morrors you can take a day off lol
-40C is not an excuse for a day off school either

Well I made it to Marham & back in one bit.The last 10 miles was very icy but still passable with care. The job however needs parts so will be going back in the new year.

i think a WINTER driving COURSE should be compulsory for all new drivers, and should be offered to exisring licence holders. does a new 17 year old know what to do if his car starts to slide?
some older folk still to this day think that all cars are REAR WHEEL drive, so put bags of sand in the back of Rover100's then wander why they have no traction.
-
We got our snow yesterday, with this mornings top-up thats all of 1 1/2 inches.
While caution is a good thing, while waiting to pull out of my street I got behind a driver in a Ka with gleaming white knuckles and eyes like saucers. Doing about 5 mph on a level road. Where the traffic had worn/melted two tyre tracks.
There does seem to be a lack of awareness about how to drive on slippery - you know, things like revving harder in 1st because the drive wheels aren't gripping....

Skidpan training is an integral part of the test over here so theoretically everyone knows what to do (apart from me %)). Despite this, at the first snow there is still a little chaos and a number of cars fail to go where they are supposed to.
Compulsory winter tyres as well although we are now seeing a reaction against studded tyres due to there environmental impact. A few towns have issued bans on their use within the town centres.

hi i live in cirencester and we have only had a little dusting of snow :(( tho the roads seem clear so i guess thats good .

Iv'e only been driving for 16months, however iv'e had numerous skids start over the past few days, not through me being a novice or driving at excessive speed, but because the roads are not gritted in the part of east yorkshire I live in. However in my 'inexperience' i managed to gain control of the car each time and reacted before anything bad happened. Oh, and this was in a courtesy car that i've had for two days. Funny, i was more worried about the VW Passat behind that thought stopping distances were the same in snow as a dry summer day, brand new grey Passat estate- don't think that was a new driver do you?
It's not an age thing, to say so is ignorant, it is a matter of attitude and ignoring the things that can be quite clearly seen with your own two eyes. I live 15miles from work and on the edge of the wolds, and I'm more worried about the other drivers on the road than the 6 inches of snow I'm driving on.
Greg
-
Well done Greg.
I have to drive on the roads as a service engineer. I have seen LOADS of bad driving this week from all age groups and not all in cars.
Just slow down. leave more space all around you. It is better to get there a bit late then not at all. Hells bells don't kill yourself !

I just know this is going to upset someone.
It is not an age thing at all, it is an experience thing. I have a son who is slightly older than you Greg and he also knows all there is about driving in the snow, or so he tells me, after all he has driven in it in two fairly mild winters. He like most drivers short on experience hasn't got a clue about how to drive on snow.

I have been driving hgv's for 25 years now,and yesterday my 32t lorry just slid sideways,on a ungritted side road.
I was only doing 5mph,lucky the kerb stopped me.
Just proves even if you have experience, you can still be caught out

The buses have all been stopped since one ended up on its side.
UPS where my son works only have 4 drivers in and they wont let them go out at the moment.
To cap it all my dog cant go in the garden because he cant walk on the footpath because of the ice. >>:-(

The locals have more sense. ;D

I absolutely loved last nights ITV weather report from Aberdeen. (Tuesdays)."Horrendous conditions all over the area and the Highland roads are all blocked", but "The ski resorts are doing very well".......OK, apart from on skis, how did they all get there? Trust TV reporters? BY.

The press frequently talk drivel about "national emergencies" and unforgivably exaggerate any story about the weather.
Two examples in "The Times" today. Above the caption of a photograph which reads "2,000 cars abandoned in Basingstoke" was a picture of snow covered cars clearly parked, neatly in a car park ! (Mind you many of us have been tempted to abandon life in Basingstoke!).
In the story of the coach crash in Hale, Cornwall both the journalist and the sub editor say "....near Cornwall..."!
Here in France also. The other day we had a TV journalist who at least admitted "3cms of snow and the world stops!"

Snow, my sister sent me a news clipping with our Christams card, picture this, downtown Bracebridge, Ontario a week last Saturday, 100cm of snow in 3 odd hours, hmmm never did like metric much but I reckon its close to 3 feet, good for the local ski slopes, they call it white gold,
Typical for that area and I miss it stuck here with a palm tree and black ice all over and numpty still tailgating me all the way to work, well off to walk the wolves.
Merry Christmas all :-))

Yes, the tailgaters get on my nerves too. Seem determined to take every opportunity to smash into the back of you.
You'd think commom sense would suggest that if you apply your brakes on sheet ice nothing much will happen but no. I can cope with driving on snow and ice - its's the other drivers which terrify me.

If I'm being tailgated in this weather I just flick my main lights on and off again. The idiot behind thinks they're brake lights and backs off a lot.

Just returned from a short break in Rome, flew in via Amsterdam - 6 to 8 inches snow and everything operating on schedule, left Amsterdam for Manchester and got turned back 30 mins into flight - Manchester shut - snow!
I have to say KLM were superb, we all got a compensation voucher, a bag of toiletries and a hotel with brekky for the night. We were lucky and got the first flight out next morning (xmas eve).
I was sweating though, because I had to get to work, which is where I am now. >>:-(

Well it snowed here in Airdrie back on the 21st or something, and it's still lying. We've got about 8" in fits and spurts over the week. We had a few days where the temp poked its head above 0C, but it's well below freezing now (and forecast for -6C over the next couple of nights). Thing is, I've heard that the local council (North Lanarkshire) haven't spent any money on grit. They ran out of cash. That might explain why the grit trucks are sometimes seen but not spreading anything. (Presumably so they can say "the trucks are out" without lying about it). Will I get a rebate on the Council Tax? Nah ... don't think so.

You can't blame the council. They have to spend their money as advised by the Met Office. Up till the end of November the Met Office was forecasting a warm mild winter, and that 2010 will be the warmest year on record. The council can't buy grit if that's the forecast - they would be accused of wasting your money.
You'll probably find they've bought lots of suncream and bottled water for handing out to collapsing sunbathers.

It's odd that no one seems to question or blame the Met Office, even though I've noticed their forecasts getting more inaccurate over the last few years. And quite a lot of important decisions are made with their input - not only farmers, but quite a lot of commerce depends on them...

The North London Met Office forecast this lunchtime was sunny for today and the next two days, some chance of snow on Thursday.
Now it is evening, the same forecast is snow Tuesday and Wednesday, sunny Thursday and Friday. This has been going on for at least a year now - the forecast a few days beforehand (when you need it) is completely wrong, and then they change it to match the weather when it happens. In fact they change it all over the shop - a bit like a blunderbuss - they must be right sometime! I wish there was a way of auditing what they are doing - I suspect a flipped coin would be as effective...

...or they could be on there way to grit elsewhere or on there way back to reload. Here's a suggestion; approach any gritter driver - doesn't matter which one - and say, "I think you are just skiving and not really working". You can report his response from A&E if you like.

The Swedish forecast must be really bad, then.
So far, my Met Office forecasts have been:
Monday Morning - sunny Mon, Tues, Wed - chance of light snow on Thurs
Monday Evening - light snow Tues, Wed - Sunny Thurs and Fri
Tuesday Morning - sunny Tues, Heavy snow Wed, light snow Thurs, Fri and Sat.
At the moment it is heavy overcast (when it should be sunny). Never mind, I'm sure the afternoon forecast will be different....

I see the Head of the Met Office is onto a nice little earner:
"John Hirst, the organisation’s chief executive, received between £195,000 and £200,000 in pay and bonuses in 2008/9. The figure is a 25 per cent increase on the £155,000 to £160,000 "pay equivalent" for Mr Hirst in 2007/8...." Telegraph
We must remember that in these times of financial stringency, all workers will be called on to tighten their belts and make sacrifices. In particular service widows, nurses and pensioners will need to take a 10% pay cut. However, this does not apply to politicians, senior civil servants and financial sector executives, where it is important to pay large sums of money so that we can obtain (and retain) the best person for the job....

How the people of Germany,Switzerland,Austria,French Alpine regions, etc etc must be laughing at Poor old GB,we grind to a halt, whenever we get more than a couple of inches of snow,..schools are off, shops close public transport becomes non existent,Police forces are even hiring 4 x 4,s,yet the afore mentioned countries just get on with it,in the German alpine regions,1 metre of snow is the norm in winter, but we never see it splattered all over the news 24/7,..I can remember back in the 50,s/60.s when, winter meant snow, and we got on with it,schools never closed, buses still ran, albeit more slowly,
Why is it that we,ve suddenly become a nation of Wusses,is it because we,ve had it too good in the 70,s/80,s/90,s when snow came and stayed for a day or two then disappeared, or is it, because were governed by a bunch of Numpties who think it better to spend millions of ££££ on other countries, than to upgrade the services here at home,..the latest expenditure by those in power, spending millions to help lower "our carbon footprint"is just one of many examples,

Draft exclude around the edges with pipe lagging pushed into the gap- 4 lengths will do- you'll have to put them back after you've opened the door. but if you don't do it that often. Also, the 1.5mm steel is one giant heat exchanger, one that works the wrong way- go to your local builders merchant and get some double foil backed 12mm roof insulation, the type that comes in rolls (not fibreglass, although it might be fibreglass core?), and stick it on with dabs of silicone- brother in law has done it to his concrete floored, up and over doored (that rhymes :D) garage- it's cold, but its always a few degrees above outside, never drops below freezing and never condensates up.
Carpet the floor and insulate the ceiling with a small radiator and you'll be well away.

Well been up to RAF Marhem and North Walsham today. The drive between Marham and North Walsham was not good. Snow covered road 90% of the way. The trip back on the A11 was all OK. made good time back. If you are thinking of going to North Norfolk over the weekend DON'T. or take GREAT care on the roads up there.
-
Did M62 over the tops last weekend- havn't been that scared in a car for a long time.
Didn't help 6 month old son was in the back- if I never have to do that again it won't be missed!

I'm Toying with the thought of building a model Ice boat, our lake is frozen over about 3" thick ===I sailed 2 or 3 full sized ones in Canada in the 60's and they go like stink.

I haven't ventured over to the lake recently, Jimmy. But I suppose I could say 'get your skates on'. :-)) ok2 :-)
Derek.
-
You can get into the parking lot at the club house but the road down too the lake is too dicey you should get down ok ---but would have trouble getting a proper Land-Rover back up the hill let alone a car... we got a 4x4 stuck down there last year ... any way the club house is being redecorated and will be closed fore about another 10 days so you can't even get a cup-of -Tea
Jimmy

OOooooh you,re a bad Man Andy, how did you know this was my most favourite Malt,
this was my first taste of Malt whisky,up until 1992 I hated whisky as i thought they were all the same,my Dad used to drink White Horse, and when i was young I got a taste of it, and it was S***,and i thought all whiskies must taste like this,
Then in 92 i was on a biking holiday in Germany, andi met some German bikers, and we were in a Bar,and Uwe,asked me what i,d like to drink,I said I,d have a Vodka,He looked shocked and said,"a Vodka"you are Scottish you must have a whisky,I rolled my eyes and said OK,and looked at the bottles on the shelf, there was only one,Tamdhu,I pointed to it and said ok i will take that one,he ordered 4 glasses of Tamdhu, for myself him, Richard, and Marcus,I was not looking forward to drinking this S***but to be polite i knew i must,we all then threw back our glasses, I closed my eyes when doing so awaiting the inevitable, taste and shiver that would course through me,..it never came, what i got was this lovely warm feeling in my belly and the taste was something to behold, Since that day i have been a Malt man,and have a good selection here, and Tamdhu is among them,
Oh your a bad man tempting me like this,..now to make you squirm,I like my Malt with Milk, %%

Meanwhile back on the ski slopes of Cairngorm they have too much snow and cant get up the road to dig out the railway. Here are a couple of pics of the guys from G2 Sports on the roof of the top station. The pisting machine is still on top of at least 3ft of snow at the bottom station.

Don't talk to me about snow,I've possibly just written my car off last night, through not being able to turn a corner at just 10mph. I had been going into work last night to pick up my van for an early start this morning, with not a gritter to be seen anywhere, and slid into a railing near the work. The railings bent over, and the car got hooked up on the top of them. When you consider that my car weighs just over a ton,you can get some idea of why the railings bent at such a low speed. I drive a Citroen C5 LX estate. <:( <:(
-
Don't worry, Dreadstar - the BBC are reporting that January was warmer than normal, on average, around the world.
That is, according to the GISS figures. These are the ones that have undisclosed 'amendments' added to them, which is one of the things the current Freedom of Information complaints are going on about.....
-
When you consider that my car weighs just over a ton,you can get some idea of why the railings bent at such a low speed.
Sorry to hear that David.
I used to work at the Motor Research Assn and have seen old Rover 3.5's being run into solid objects at only 30mph and the engine finishes up on the front seats!
When people say they crashed at 70mph, what they usually mean is that they were DOING 70, reacted to the danger, braked and ACTUALLY were only doing about 20mph at the point of impact - otherwise they're not usually in a position to talk about it!
Anyway the main thing is that YOU'RE all right.
Cheers
Danny

sorry to say guys but it looks like our met service are planning to tender for UK weather forecasting rights. god help you because our met service wont. :}

More heavy snow in Stevenage stoped my boating this morn. I looked out the window at 8.00 am to heavy snow and cars trying to get up the hill by my house. I of cause did the best thing and went back to bed till 9.30. I was going to give my Hydro a blow out after it's winter rebuild, Not today !!!

Just how does he get the key in the lock ? %% Put my Swedish Navy style Springer out for an hour and a bit today.......we`ll see if I can get the key in the door later !
-
...so after an hour of light but constant snow we have.. another 24hrs of the same still to come. Check the lock-up roofs in background, some of the older ones are going to collapse I think.
-
I like your 'snow depth' indicator. Is it in inches or centimetres? From the look of the snow, I guess inches as it moved 1.25 sections.

Do here tell that its going to be cold in Portsmouth soon, someone mentioned minus 9. {-)
