Title: removal of acrylic

Hi Guys,i,ve got a model U-boot thats been painted with spray enamel,and its had an acrylic black wash applied over,is there any way i can remove the acrylic wash without damaging the enamel,

Have you tried Methylated Spirits ? On the model I mean. ok2

You could try wiping it over with acrylic paint thinners or propanol.

Tried it both ways,once when i was young and stupid,it tasted rotten,and this time,to no avail, {-)

Hi Wullie, Our local model shop uses iso-propyl (same stuff) to clean electronics & such like stuff.
              Try a good chemist & tell him/her what it is for or get on to Phills Models of North Shields,
               a very helpful guy.

Isopropyl Alcohol from Maplins, just got some this week. Ordered Sunday, delivered Monday.  :-))

Larger quantity is liquid, smaller quantity is aerosol.

I know you only want to remove the acrylic coat and for that I have no answer. However, If you decide to remove both enamel and acrylic layers then you could use model strip although it's so messy and time consuming, so instead I was recommended 'Fairy Power Spray' which you can buy in most supermarkets, and it's alot cheaper than model strip! It's fantastic stuff to use, simply spray it on and leave it for 30min's and scrub it of with an old scrubbing brush...it's brilliant  :-))

Hi Wullie,
Sorry for not getting back to you before re.propanol, been a bit tied up. If you are happy with the enamel paintwork I would really suggest you just try to remove the acrylic paint only. I f you can't get hold of propanol just use some tamiya acrylic paint thinner, put some on a clean cloth or piece of kitchen roll and rub it over the area. Keep the cloth moist with solvent and keep rubbing gently until the paint is removed. The enamel paint should be unaffected. If you don't get any joy then try Voyager's method. Cheers.  :-))

Just to update,I got a small bottle of Stain Devils that removes grease, paint, and lubricants,..and it did the trick, and it only removed the acrylic wash, great stuff, :-)

Thanks to all who suggested various other methods,..Mr Muscle also worked but this Stain Devil is the biz
