A couple of us from Norwich would like to come for the weekend (please check the ambiguity on the dates above) assuming it is Saturday through to Monday,
Neither of us have been before so don't quite know what to expect, (apart from the  'Banter' from those on here!)
Will us 'guests' be allowed to sail or is it Club members only?
Are scale warships welcome?
What about displaying 'work in progress' builds?
(I have a half finished Hermes as seen on modelwarshipsuk.co, plus other boats if people would be interested.)

Is power available for those of us with 'tin tents' (medical requirement) on the campsite?
I trust we book pitches as per the Wicksteed website?

Sorry for so many questions Martin

Rex

Rex

First off you are already a member of the club, so you and other members from Norwich are more than welcome to come. Scale warships are welcome, any thing that floats is welcome you can also display work in progress though you might want a gazebo to protect it from the usual bank holiday weather. Some of us get there on the Friday to set things up, so if you want to come then and pitch in no problems
I am pretty sure there is no power on the camp site, and you book the pitches through Wicksteed.

See you then

Brian

Title: Re: Wicksteed 2010 - May 29,30 - SPRINGER GAMES
Post by: chingdevil on March 24, 2010, 08:11:15 pm

Sumo Springer Rules

Springers must conform to the standard Springer configuration: - correct size 18 x 8, maximum 550 motor, maximum voltage 7.2volts, no Korts nozzles and the rudder must be a maximum of 4 square inches
The Competitors will start in the centre between two sets of markers
Competitors must attempt to push their opponents through the markers
Once the front of the pushing Springer reaches the markers it is declared the winner of that push
The competition will be on both Saturday and Sunday
Each round will last a maximum of 3 minutes, unless a Springer is pushed through the markers
After the 3 minutes have elapsed if neither Springer has been pushed out, the pushing Springer nearest the opponent’s markers is the winner
The winner of each round will go forward to the next
Competitors must register with Chingdevil, before or on the day so they can be put in the draw.

Springer Balloon Bursting Rules

Springer’s must conform to the standard Springer configuration:- correct size 18 x 8, maximum 550 motor, maximum voltage 7.2volts, no Korts nozzles and the rudder must be a maximum of 4 square inches
The Competition will take place in a 2metre square ring; competitors will be disqualified if they leave the ring
Competitors must attempt to burst the balloon mounted on the rear of the Springer using a pin mounted on the front of their Springer
The balloon must be attached at the rear of the springer at deck level
The balloon bursting device must be mounted at deck level on the front of the springer knees
If a balloon should fall off a Springer the clock will stop and the competitor must come to the side and re-attach it, during this time the other competitor cannot move under power.
If a balloon should burst and it had not been burst by the opposition, the clock will stop and the competitor must come to the side and refix it, during this time the other competitor cannot move under power
The competition will be on both Saturday and Sunday
Each round will last a maximum of 3 minutes, unless a balloon is burst
If after 3 minutes have elapsed no balloons have been burst, the competitors will be reset for another try. If after a further 3 minutes no balloons have been burst, the winner will be decided by which competitor tried the hardest to burst a balloon
The winner of each round will go forward to the next
The equipment to attach the balloon to the springer and the device to burst the balloon will be supplied on the day
Competitors must register with Chingdevil, before or on the day so they can be put in the draw

Just saw this on the Positive Weather Soloutions web site, looks promising for Wicksteed

Brian

May 2010

An unsettled start to the month, with some rain around, possibly heavy, broken up with some drier and brighter spells of weather.  The rain will continue to feature into the second week, and there is a chance that there may even be a slight cause for concern with flooding, but the confidence on this isn't high.  Temperatures will be on or above the average, so at least it will feel pleasantly mild for the first part of May.

By mid-month, the Atlantic influence begins to wane, and the weather shows signs of breaking into a stable pattern of weather, with some dry and sunny Spring days. Temperatures will be on the warm side, so a pleasant period through the middle part of May.

Whilst there is the potential for some rain for the final third of May, and indeed some extended periods of rain, the month will generally I believe end on a warm note, with some pleasant sunshine.  I expect this settled weather to see us into June as well, and whereas it won't be all plain sailing, with the prospect of a continuous run of fine weather, it will, for the majority of the time, be a settled late Spring/early Summer.

Temperatures for the month will reflect average to above average values.

I'm up for it. I don't know anyone from the forum, but would quite happily contribute some BBQ items and beer. Do you BBQ individually or as a communual group?

John

Yes. I publish that later this week. Half price Park entrance fee - £6  £3

Don't forget, Chingdevil will be running the Springer competitions.
They will also be Footie racing, Scale towing, Club 500, Warship patrols, Lifboat boys, OMRA Power Boat display, Seaport tug display - we do need a few Kettles Steam boats to put on a display!

Awards for Springer winners, Club 500 race boats, voted favourite boat, steering competition, most ambitious project, furtherest travelled visitor, best kit build or conversion, anyone that beat SteambBoatPhil at straight running, funniest sinking of the weekend, best joke or laugh of the weekend, best banger from a bar b q and other awards to be decided on the spur of the moment, after studious and in depth consideration.

What a Model Boat Mayhem Cap, shirt or fleece? Steamboat Phil will be bringing an arm full!

Martin (Getting really excited now! )   :-)

Sorry guys, corrected. Not OMRA, although they are most welcome, as well as NOMRA (National Offshore Model Racing Assn).

.... there will be a POWER Boat Display.
......... "Smell my exhaust pipe!"

PS. Andy, do you fancy helping me with a simple steering course?

No problem, thanks for the clarification Martin.
Andy and Bill will be there all weekend flying the flag for NOMRA (might be renamed very soon ... ), a few others and I will be coming for Saturday (racing on Sunday, I'm afraid).
I think both of them will have problems with running any course on the Wicksteed lake - they've both got faster boats than last year  :o :o
My "Bear" went into hibernation and has refused to get up (lazy so-and-so) so will not be putting in an appearance this year (the hull is now doing a sterling job of supporting part of a new local housing estate  %) )
We may have to get some of these "club 500" thingys - after all, we're only there for the FUN  {-) %% {-) %%

Cheers
Danny

I'll also run the IC demo again if you like, provided I don't have to do the PA bit...

Best place for it I think... %)

Don't worry about the PA bit Andy. I will be there from Friday eve till Sunday afternoon & I will be happy to do it.
Danny is right My new boat will be on show ONLY this year. The lake is just to small. However if we get the use of the big lake out the back then we could give it ago.  Got my Thames boat nearly done now so it will be there and Oscar springer, Gas Springer + my Nomra boat.
Oh yes If you look in Model boat mag last month and again this month you can see some brill pics of my new NOMRA (soon to changed name) boat.

I'm hoping to have 20 litres of "Dark destoyer" homebrew ready.

My last brew started as standard bitter with 24 tps of ginger powder to make ginger beer and then i used high tolerance wine yeast to take it to 9.5% abv.

The "Destroyer" has refinements to make it a "best" bitter, but it should brew out to about 10 or 11% abv

Just hope it's ready

Contrary a bit of mischievous postings on here by a couple of old soaks .... and a few not so old!

The Mayhem Model Boat Rally at Wicksteed is a 'tea total' family orientated event.

The emphasis as previously will be on:

Bring your boat and have a sail with like minded modellers from all over the country.
Sit and have chat,
See the club displays,
Meet the MPBA,
Meet the manufactures,
Buy your bits from all the Traders, (phone your orders in ahead of time and I'm sure you can avoid postage costs!)
Enter the fun events, Static display, First time builds, Steering, Straight running, Springers, Yachts & Footies,
Tug towing, Club 500 racing - nothing too serious though!  ok2

This is a participation event, you've sent all that time and/or money on that model... come and show it off!.
There will be a 'bring your own' Bar B Q & beer on Saturday evening and a night sail (so put some Christmas lights on your boat).

But most of all, come, relax, put your feet up, have  sail, have a snooze, see all the boats, chat to or avoid as many people as you want!!

See you there and all the Tea, coffee and biscuits are all on SteamboatPhil & I !

Regards,
 Martin - Model Boat Mayhem

PS. Discount park entrance voucher available here on Friday.

Sound like a good plan to me Martin.
Do you think those nice chaps at Model power can bring a charged up battery for my boat. I will email them soon and place my order. Yes tea & coffee for me all day.
Did you ask if there is any chance of a run on the big lake for us petrol heads Martin??
I have ordered the sunshine all weekend so it's bound to rain.
If you are thinking of comming along then don't delay on a Brillo weekend doing what we like best.

As the event gets closer I feel its time to get a few boats out, and think of a pile of excusses why I keep getting beat at straight running----maybe there is something to this new fangled wireless control type thing---hummmmm.

Of course its tea total----then the sun goes down  O0

Will have my new toy with me---clue---Mr Dean-----Beale Park------one or two much loved £20 notes   ok2

Will we be having a bring and buy ?

Right better start loading the car--could take a while
And just to show you how upto date our club is, we do run this wireless control thing----see  :-))

Martin,

I must appologise, I did not intend my beer post to suggest the event might be a boozy weekend away. One of my other hobbies is brewing and in a rather cack handed way i was trying to show what can be done with a little imagination. I have re-read my post and can now see how it may have read to other members.

Once again appologies to all who may have been worried by my post.

No need to apologize old man,  <*<

Mayhem at Wicksteed is a Fun Family event and we want everyone to come, meet old friends, make news one,
sail your boat, sail someone else's boat, watch other people sail their boats, look in awe at the boats on display,
chat with fellow modellers, meet the traders, enter the fun competitions... eg, beating SteamboatPhil at Straight
running , etc, etc, etc......

.... and then in the evening when the park has closed, and the Bar B Q starts,  Stavros sets fire to his table, then you
may , if you all been good Mayhemers, have a small bottle of grog!

BTW:  I'm now in round 6 or negotiations with 'Mrs Mayhem' for a chicken curry/stew/casserole/cock-au-vin for the Bar B Q.   :-))

Cause someone got a belt ( electrical shock) of the battery they used to use and fell in the water.  Opps  :} :}
Tea & coffee all day for me.
However beer and BBQ sounds very good for the evening time

That would explain why you are like how you are then Andy.  ;) ;) To much nitro in your rolls mate ain't good for you.  Now petrol on the other hand is fine.
Anyway lets get back on track and talk about the main event of the year.
The sun is going to shine all weekend the water is going to be claim  just like me. Really looking forwards to it now, Just 2 more weeks at work then we will be there.

Hi Knoby (Glen)

No you will not need a boiler certificate if you are under the 3 bar litre (I may have my test equipment with me, if so I will test your boiler if you like)

No what shall I bring......

Well something that floats, but doesn't necessary go straight  {-)
Got to get it alltogether now as I'm off working Israel Monday and get back the day before I head to the great event that is Mayhem----
pauseing briefly to pick up AndyN, pop into his Nans house, have huge fry-up breakfast, watch Andy put up my awning because I'll be too full to move.  O0

Hi all

I'm now planning to be at Wicksteed.   If I can get a pitch I'll bring my old caravan over.  Which nights do I need to book - Friday and Saturday?   When is the BBQ?  I'll bring my own food and throwaway BBQ as I'm vegetarian.

I hope to bring my Colin Archer if I can get the rigging and trials done in time.   Hold up ATM is finding the best way to do the red circle and black number on the mainsail.  I'm going to do some experiments with laser printer heat transfer paper as I don't think I can do it neatly freehand.   I'll also have the Karoline and steam launch Lady Constance.

BTW Phil, I want to finally actually buy a polo shirt (XL) so will bring some money with me.

Cheers

Guy

No problem with the shirt Guy,
I'm booked in from the Friday night through to the Monday, we have the lakeside BBQ on the Sat night, and the lovely Mrs Mayhem always produce's some fine curry's / chilli's as well.We also have a night sail-------hummm straight running in the dark (it can only help--maybe fit a bell)
Then back to the camp site site to chat about--well boats  :-)) (and how hot the day has been  {-) {-))

Thanks Phil I'll give the park a call today.   I'll book Fri, Sat, Sun nights.    Not sure if I can rig lights on any of the boats in time but we'll see.   WRT straight running - how about using a laser beam to point the boat?

Mrs Mayhem's curries sound great for non-veggies.    I'll try to bring a veggie version so I can join in!

Cheers

Don't worry about the PA bit Andy. I will be there from Friday eve till Sunday afternoon & I will be happy to do it.
Danny is right My new boat will be on show ONLY this year. The lake is just to small. However if we get the use of the big lake out the back then we could give it ago.  Got my Thames boat nearly done now so it will be there and Oscar springer, Gas Springer + my Nomra boat.
Oh yes If you look in Model boat mag last month and again this month you can see some brill pics of my new NOMRA (soon to changed name) boat.
All ready posed what i'm taking there.

Hi, All   :-))

Can anyone help, I have sent several e-mail's to Martin but no reply he may not be getting my mail
so I am asking anyone that can advise on below.

I am down to attend wicksteed park as a trader:  modelboatbits

I have never attended this event so I was wondering about the camping facility.

Is the campsite close to where I have been allocated my traders pitch?

Also do I have to book the camping through wicksteed park website directly?

If you could kindly advise on these point's or any other information about the event
that would be great, I am really looking forward to it, Just need the good weather.

Many Thank's

Steve

Hi Steve

You book the campsite through Wicksteed it is £15.00 per night, tell them it is for the Mayhem weekend as I understand it is quite busy that weekend. The campsite is about 5 minutes walk from the lake, most of us put our boats in our cars so we get really lazy and drive. If you want to unload you gear you can park very close to the lake to do that, but the park do not like cars left there as there is a railway that runs along side the lake so it will have to be moved.  There is a car parking area about 1 minute from where you can unload, so your van/car is within easy reach. The lake has a good path all the way around, so moving gear is fairly easy, do not forget your gazebo/marquee. I am getting there early on the Friday, the park are ok with us getting there early to set up so if you want to that will be ok. there is no charge for entry or parking if you are camping there

I will PM you my phone number if there is anything else you want to know give me a ring.

Brian

Bob, sizzling bacon will have you wide awake now matter how far away you are (plus my special veggie pan for those not inlcined to bacon--veggie sausages taste better as well)
 :-)) :-))
Me and wendy will also have some vegetarian stuff including a BBQ as Wendy is a complete Veggie and will not even use equipment that has touched meat. I however am a carnivore to excess which makes our mealtimes interesting.

I've booked the caravan for Friday and Saturday nights.   I'll probably only get there just before the arrival deadline on Friday as I'll be picking the 'van up from the service engineers and coming straight on.   I'll have some vegetraian food with me and a BBQ tray to cook on unless we're going to have two BBQs going, one for veggie stuff.   I'm not as strict as Dueller's wife.   I don't eat anything with eyes but my carnivore partner and I do share kitchen equipment.

Roll on next w/e

Hi Guy

Less of the  salad munchers!  :-)   My carnivore (or more accurately omnivore) partner eats more tasteless green stuff than I do!!   We need our protein too, we just get it from different sources.   Actually betwen us we're a right pair.   I'm veggie and Type II diabetic and she's dairy and egg intolerant so eating out can be fun at times   :(( :((

We used to share a lot of Quorn based products but we can't do that any longer as they're bound with egg white and it seems to be the albumne that she reacts to.

Cheers

Wicksteed is a secure site but I wouldn't if I were you.
We locked all our stuff away in car boots last year.
There may be room in the Wicksteed MBC lockup but you'll need to make that arrangement with them yourself.

Car has got bulb sensors and all sorts of other electrickery on it. Tow bars are not as easy as they used to be...

Last year on the Saturday night after the evening sail the guy who runs the railway kindly allowed us to put our boats on to the train which was then run into the station for the night behind securely locked gates and a security fence. As Martin says, probably not best to leave gear around the pondside overnight. Who knows what the local pondlife might get up to?

I really envy you lot as I shall miss the show this year, it's shaping up to be really good.

Taken from the PWS web site

  UK 7 Day Forecast
Valid from Friday May 28th 2010 to
Thursday June 3rd 2010

A mixed forecast, but no Bank Holiday washout.  The emphasis being on 'dry' weather, where people can at least get out and about.

For the north, some rain around, but the percentages lean towards there being more drier weather than wetter weather.  Daytime temperatures will be on the cool side compared with recent values, in the 14c to 16c region, falling away to no lower than 8c/46f overnight.  The daytime values will revive themselves as the week progresses.  Winds start north westerly, eventually ending up south easterly.

For the southern half of the UK, more encouraging.  For the bulk of time looking dry with some sunny intervals.  Daytime temperatures in the 17c to 19c region, and no lower than 10c/50f overnight.  As with the north, daytime values will revive themselves as the week progresses, climbing possibly into the mid 20's.  Winds start north westerly, eventually ending up south easterly.

Sun cream it is then :-)) :-)) :-))

What is the 'form' on the BBQ?
Is it a central thing?
Do we all 'chip in?
How do we contribute or
Do we all do our own thing?

Sorry about the 'dumb questions' but this will be my first Mayhem event and I don';t quite know what to expect.

Looking forward eagerly to the weekend.

Hi Mayhemers,

Great news - the paint has just dried on this winters secret project and I hope to have yet another maiden voyage at Wicksteed (last year was the computer controlled flash steamer "Vital Byte").

This year's steam boat has no computer, no engine, no propellor and, also, no rudder and is somewhat .... different! (although the shape may suggest it, it is not pyramid power!).

Hopefully, if its not too rough, I shall be exploring its performance (I'm as much in the dark as anyone else as to what might happen).

Looking forward to great Wicksteed 2010.

Ian.

Rex, we all get to the side of the lake, have a few beers and carry on sailing the boats (fit lights on it). Bring your own food and chuck it on the barbies. Don't know what's planned for this year but last year we had about 6 disposable ones.

Ian, going by that description it's a pop-pop boat? {-)

Best thing I can say to all these newcomers to the event is go with the flow, it's a brilliant weekend out and is about the most fun you can have with a model boat :-)) Most of what you need is what you'd take on a camping trip, but with the addition of model boats. The main aim is to have fun O0

Hi Andy,

There's no "pop-pop" with this boat! ( it might "glug-glug").

Keep guessing...

See you there.

Ian.

I am bringing a couple of disposable BBQs so there is going to be some spare space, bring what you want to eat. As Andyn has said while we barbie we sail some boats into the darkness as well, and we might have a beer or three. Bring some food for lunch over the weekend, otherwise you might miss something as you wander off to get something.

See you there

It would seem that the nice chaps at Wicksteed park are going to let us petrol heads run some DEMO runs on the big lake. However we do have to find a 300m boom around the area. Hopfully this can be shorted out.
In the mean time all normal rules will be used at all times.
1 Failsafes will be fitted & Check out before each run by me. OOD.
2 We are only going to run a demo so NO RACING on the lake at any time.
3 If your boat is to nosey you will be ask to stop ASAP and not allowed to run again.
I do want you to bring your petrol head boats and enjoy yourself's but H&S and common sense MUST be the 1st concern at all times.
I will post the BMPRS rule latter today.

When you look like Brian "Ching", Martin D and me (i.e. thinner from the front) it helps to smooth out the side view..................maybe?  :o

We got here at around 1.30pm and the sun was out and it was blooming HOT!!!!!
We have now set up the shop at Hunter Systems and is ready to sell you lots of goodies tomorrow and Sunday. I have had my beer followed by my cocoa. Going to walk the dog and watch a bit of telly.
Got loads of Planet radios on board plus the new OCTO 8 way switcher and the really load Diesel generator.
So come to the Wicksteed show - you WILL enjoy it.
See you there.

Captions during the week when everybody catches up back here on Mayhem!

Well it rained on and off all day but the biggest downpour was just after the sun had come out and it started to warm up about 6PM!
I had lots and lots of very interesting chats and learned loads of new tricks especially from Paul Freasny .
Doug got the day off to a 'rousing' start .... that ended up with the police paying us a little visit!
FLG tried to perform self surgery when setting up his display table. blood everywhere....
Ian put on a awesome flash steam jet propelled boat, that looked like a burst steam line, that shot down the lake at an
embarrassing 2 MPH... and duly won the Model Boat Mayhem award for worst performance of the day!
Ghost dropped his camera in the lake.
Hanna is all grown up and her new hair style is great.
Andy bought another boat.
Someone had a great little electric hydroplane, which after a few fast runs wrapped itself around SteamboatPhil's Straight line poles!
Some very impressive bruhless boat's including a Sea Queen on the plane and Stavro's  large lifeboat.
An impressive American warship put on an impressive sounds, recordings, gun fire effects & smoke screen.
Bill's vintage rebuilt river cruiser sailed past me several times playing cocktail music?!?!?
Alan let me sail his gigantic TID tug. He offered to let me sail the even giganticer HMS Kent... but chickened out.
Debbie's cherry and walnut cake was delightful.
Mrs mayhem's Chili con cane went down a right treat.
A part of Bradders caravan blew off during the night!

A few more photos from today....

Let me be the first to report.

What a great day. This was the biggest meeting so far, and I've been to five. Stands and displays nearly all around the lake and overspill trade stands on the path leading in.

Made a few purchases and talked all day. I expect a more detailed report will follow when the others drag their selves away.

Here is a movie of my Severn's first launch, which gives a flavour of the meeting. Oh yes, it did rain a bit but we didn't notice.

Made it to Wicksteed on saturday and despite the rain had a great time managed to spend a few quid and down a few cups of tea thanks Mrs Martin and family, also thanks to the people manning the bring and buy, it's a shame more boats were'nt on the water but never mind i'll start praying for good weather for next year.
Thanks a lot Martin, Phil and all the others who helped out.

Well, no rain today (Sunday) but plenty of wind. I think that many clubs will be purchasing new gazebos after today {-) They were flying all over the place. Not sure how much the traders managed to sell - they were all too busy hanging on to their tents and displays - except John P who was sitting back and enjoying himself. O0
Some nice warship models on the water, and a couple of yachts making the most of the wind. Stavros was kept busy rescuing boats (and a hovercraft). FLJ was telling everyone how he almost bled to death from his injury! Only saw two outrageous shirts though.

two good boats seen on the lake were the Queens Privateer's cutter, and the HMS kent, which is some 12feet in length, yes "1/bloomin massive" scale and yes it belies its size, getting moving remarkably quickly, though stopping it, thats a different question

Just got back and sorted out the wet stuff. (Aint it amazing where rain can get when you thought everything was covered up?) Today was much better weather wise but hang gliding from gazebos is to be dropped from next years programme.

A big big thank you to all those who did the organising and setting up. Three enormous cheers to Martin and I hope the meal for Mrs M doen't break the bank  :-))

As for the entertainment? I couldn't possibly comment  <*<

MAJOR CRISIS ROCKS MAYHEM MANAGEMENT
It takes more than wind and rain to spoil the Mayhem event, but disaster was only just avoided on Sunday afternoon when the Catering Dept (Ruth, bless her ) announced that she had run out out plastic cups for tea. This sent strong men into a panic and the cry of ' I will go and find my old cup' was heard around the venue. Over 1000 hot drinks were supplied. Ideas have been set in motion to avoid this intolerable problem arising next year.

On a more serious note. A very well done is deserved by all involved in this years event. Despite very difficult and unpleasant conditions we all had a thoroughly good time. It was nice to see the support from the trade and to welcome new traders to the event. Good camaraderie, friendship and a willingness to help each other mark this as a first class event.
I think that this bodes well for the future and the event will grow in size and importance.

I am now working on a design for an improved tent peg.
Peter.

May I add my thanks to Martin and all those who helped for organising a brilliant rally. In view of the forecast for Saturday and the prospect of a long drive (with lengthy roadworks on all three motorways!), I had wondered whether to make the effort.

I enjoyed the day immensely. There was a large number of excellent models to inspect and admire, plus plenty of interesting people to talk to. I felt sorry for the traders - the rain must have affected their business - and particularly sorry for Dave Milbourn with his macerated finger! Two highlights for me were witnessing the launch of Ken's R.N.L.I. Severn and also the maiden voyage of Brian's superb "Sealight".

Thanks to everyone who put in all the hard work

Come wind and rain we shall sail our boats!

On behalf of Luton and District Model Boat Club, I would like to say a big thankyou to Martin and ALL the Mayhem Team for a great weekend! As this was my First Mayhem week end I would like to point out some highlights.
The total friendliness of EVERYONE who camped or came to the show. The fact that with my Mayhem Badge on, I received comments, Your Klunk, you're not what I was expecting!! (not sure what they were expecting!!)
To Mr and Mrs Brumstead........who every time I went past their caravan, conned me out of more money! But I did get a very welcome cup of tea!!!
The advice and information imparted willingly.
Meeting the large cuddly bear named Stavros!
getting wet on Saturday, but that did not diminish the atmosphere of all the hardened Mayhemmer's!
Seeing all the wind shredded Gazebo's on Sunday morning before the Public got in and the fact that everone pitched in to get it all sorted quickly.
Meeting and putting faces to all the names on mayhem!
Again thanks to all who came and introduced themselves and a really big thanks to Jack of Palaform, I came, I bought and he built my new hovercraft. It is all finished now and waiting to be test driven.........

Another great Mayhem weekend, great to see so many people there and so many new faces, I am sure I did not speak to everyone but with so many there I think only Martin caould achieve that. I have finally put everything away and emptied the car, now need to earn some brownie points because of all the muddy washing :(( :((

The weather was not as great as last year but on par with other years, the reason for that was Mark and Angie "They be Jonah's they be" they could not come last year and we had a heat wave, this year glad to see them back but the weather!!!!

Seriously though it was great to see so many traders including new ones, let us hope that next year even more show up.

A very very big thanks to Martins wife Ruth who come rain shine or a marquee taking off tirelessly supplied everyone with tea and coffee. The lady also cooked a brilliant chillie con carne for the BBQ, absolutely outstanding.

Last but not least a big thanks to Martin and Bradders without who this fantastic show would have never started :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))

As others have said it was good to meet more and put faces to the nicknames.
I would also like to thank Martin and the organisers for all there hard work. Especially Martins family.
And there was rather a few nice pieces of cake consumed, yummy.

All in all well worth the travel and accommodation!!

Most of what needs top be said has already been said but no harm in repeating some of it!   It was a great weekend in spite of the mixed weather.  I was a day visitor last year but stayed over this time.   I'm delighted that I did.   The company on Friday and Saturday night was excellent and the thoughtful provision of  a veggie BBQ much appreciated.    It was a pleasure to put some names to faeces (oops - FACES!) and to share thoughts with so many people.   My Colin Archer got her maiden voyage on the Sunday and thanks to SB Phil helping me out with some steam oil (I discovered too late that my bottle was in Sussex!) the  launch Fair Constance had a run before being nearly swamped in the heavy storm on Saturday.

A special word for FLJ and his broken finger and also to the owner of the other Colin Archer (Wicksteed member) who gave me a lot of useful ideas.

Finally it was a particular pleasure to meet "the other" Guy and his delightful family.   Please tell Imogen that I'll try to remember to bring fruit salad again if I make it to next year's weekend   :-)

So, many thanks to everyone who helped to make the w/e such a success in particular Martin and Bradders, without whom we wouldn't have Mayhem at all.

Here's to next year.

Cheers

Guy

PS I see "the other" Guy posted while I was writing!

Many thanks to Martin and everyone that made myself (lee) and Wendy so welcome. Met some great people, Phil, Mark and Anje, especially as we had only just met and were welcomed to Phil's caravan for an after barbeque drink.

We had an eventfull pre Mayhem timescale. Friday night bought the lights for the trailer and an impulse buy of a new tent. Saturday, up at seven to fit the trailer lights and pack. M1 was three lanes of solid traffic so got off at the next exit to go via "the country". Just north of St Neots the trailer tyre blew off the rim (no spare) breakdown man arrived and took Wendy to buy a "Tyre", they came back with a complete wheel, rim and all. Eventually got to Wicksteed  :-), waited for a gap in the weather and got the new tent up in just 18 mins.
After that it all just got better and better.

In case anyone was looking at the pre built "sea pearl" 1 metre sail boat on special offer. I bought it.

Lee

Hi all,

Really wanted to come to the show this year but didnt fancy the 360 mile round trip and the rain.

I do plan to come to next year (i assume there will be one), and plan to try and bring my models.

Question for Martin - Will you be putting a gallery of photos on the home page at some point?

Dan

Yes I will be putting up a gallery Dan... as soon as aches and pains subside and I can stop yawning!

The mischievous weather made for a fun and exciting weekend  but the good old British blithe spirit shone through and we
 still had a great laugh!

Most memorable (and terrifying) moment of the weekend:
The Mayhem marquee, (steel framed 3 x 9m tent) had Phil's big gas tea urn, full of boiling water for the tea & coffee.
In close proximity to the urn were my son & daughter, Bradders daughter and a number of other people queuing for coffee.

A huge gust of wind then caught the tent, ripped out all the ground pegs, threw the tent against a tree and nearly flew off.
Everybody rushed over and grabbed at tent, wondering just how hard we should hold on it in the wind but fortunately the wind
subsided as quick as it picked up and all was suddenly still again.

I looked around in a panic waiting for the groan of injury, flash of leaking blood or the scream of ascolding water burn - but nothing!
I looked at the girls, still stilling there in the midsts of off this. Their eyes wide open, "Ooo, errr!" my girl says, not realising what
 was really happening.
Me (hanging on to a tent pole), "Are you just going to sit there?"
 Girls, "That was scary!"
Me 'Please vacate the building. Walk calmly to the nearest fire exit.' ( I maybe paraphrasing what I actually said.. quite considerably! )

We then pulled the tent down and doubled the ground anchors.
No deaths or injuries, thank goodness.
Smashed up the PA amp and speakers quite a bit.
A cup of coffee missed Stavro's very expensive camera by millimeters.
And surprisingly the tent frame was still in one piece!

Someone in the coffee queue then said, as coolly-as-you-like, "Are there any biscuits to go with the coffee?"   >>:-(

Doug said the wind picked up because I had the mic in my hand and was threatening to do karaoke!   <*<

WELL what I can say that hasn't already been said. Having left Mayhem on the Sunday, going off to France to work and just getting back (now packing for the Alford show) its all been a hectic week.
Mayhem 1V was a huge success and I meet even more great people ( I even bumped into our friend from the north Gynger--- literally  car to car ..opps) and saw some great models large (well very large) and small (Bradders daughter now has one ---arg cute the little sailing boat that is ) Well done Martin et al (Ruth next year I'm bringing double the tea, coffee, sugar cups etc we're not getting caught out again x)
Some of the (many) highlights for me:
Cygnets club large scale model (a great straight runner)
Being wooped (yet again) at straight running by Hannah who scored 29 from a max 30 (oh the shame)
Ghost and his under water camera (although it wasn't supposed to be)
Bill running over one of my marker buoys with his nutter boat and big big prop (result one washing up liquid bottle with its top cut off)
Poor FLJ and his finger, with me holding his hand while Dace Abbott administered first (and second) aid and then realising I'd been holding his hand for a while---true love
Stavros getting up close with his camera for action shots-------brave or ????
The airborne antics of the aerial acrobatic formation flying gazebo team, followed closely by the formation of the Wicksteed Park Scrap Metal Company
AndyN's haircut
Getting my eyesight back after the Hawaiian shirt eve
Trying to stay one ahead of all the traders while guarding my £20 note.
A great weekend, here's to next year------I'm so ready

Oh and Klunk you are sooooo in trouble, any way you never know when you have to leap out of bed and light a boiler !!!!!!!!!!

Phil you forgot to mention Andy's Christening of my experimental steam jet boat!

For those that didn't see the action(?) the jet boat was on its maiden voyage performing according to theory (I'll open a new thread for that aspect) when it stopped in the middle of the pond. Andy, as promised, leaped into the water to retrieve the boat, being warned not to burn himself.

Well, on reaching the boat he had a religeous experience (he saw the light!) and then, knowing that it was the maiden voyage, decided to "baptise" the nameless craft.

Phil and I had a jaw-dropping moment as Andy pushed the stern under water and, as Phil and I raised our arms fanatically to heaven, the boat was "baptised" even further until only the bow was projecting above the "holy" water.

On enquiring as to his sacred action it was apparent Andy was in his fire fighter and NOT priestly mode after all, and, on seeing the flame issueing from the gas burner, decided to extinguish the flames of hell.

Andy, in the best Christian tradition, you are forgiven - its very funny in hindsight.

After checking the electrics (it was a blown electric water pump fuse), I put the boat back on the water. The sight and sound of the steam jet engine certainly attracted a lot of attention, but was not possible to perform at all well, since all the glass cotton boiler insulation was sodden and heavy.

Anyway the experimental craft has given me a valuable understanding as to why any sort of pure gas jet propelled boat (including gas turbine) will never perform well - as will be explained in the Steam R&D section of the forum - it is as important to know why things don't work as to why they do.

Thankyou Martin for awarding me the Mayham "Awarded for Excellence" Plaque. Yes, the boat with no computer, no engine, no propellor and no rudder also had no bow wave!

Ian

I have an Eagle Book of Hobbies and an Eagle Book of Balsa Models somewhere which has the parkland peril in it.  A profile Boy's Own rocket ship hanging on two bent up paper clips from a fine thread strung between two trees. The little Jetex 50c clips on the bottom. The naughty schoolboy creeps out from behind a tree, lights fuse and watches as old biddies run screaming from the woods!

We laughed, bless us!

The Jetex Bluebird was not, shall we say, unidirectional, but great fun.  We used to light 'em up and aim for kids with Eezibilts in the hope of conflagration.
No such luck, though.

It was great to meet some of you Mayhemers at my first Wicksteed, some were interested to see me committing "surgery" on my Spektrum TX after the liquid sunshine got in on Saturday - I got most of it working again for Sunday, which was lucky, much better conditions for sailing. Note to self, get rain cover (will that guarantee fine weather next time?). Thanks for the Chili, great stuff! :-)) I missed most of the altitude record attempt for gazebos as I was busy watching my IOM (NZL 32) getting knocked flat.

Ha,ha, I thought that might rouse some memories from somewhere.  I was born and raised in Romford, but the nearest lake was a bus ride away in Valentine's Park.  Couldn't use Raphael's Park in Romford because you couldn't get all round the lake.

My Sea Urchin would run all afternoon on a flat (shaped!) bell battery!
And we never got beaten up or our sandwiches nicked, like when we tried fishing.  Never again!
Regards,
Vintagent

Still no captions, though. For most of us who can't get to these dos, it would be nice to be able to identify models, maybe even people I suppose!

Captioning 1,000 + photos is a bit of a task, but if you copy the photos back here  or list the names of the photos you would like more information on, I'm sure we can come up with some answers!  :-))
