Title: Hatch cover material?
Post by: Patrick Henry on January 03, 2010, 12:09:50 pm
Any of you guys know the best material to make a hatch cover from?

The hatch on my now modified Magnum is quite large and the edges are angled downwards, so I'm going to need a flexible material which will tape down securely.
Pic shows what I mean...

Hi Rich
Unless you're going for out and out speed, you'll be putting some sort of cockpit structure on the top.
You can buy fibreglass sheet from your model shop. I would suggest putting a support round the opening which allows the deck to sit flush, then build your cockpit onto the deck as this will also provide stiffening.
Alternately, you could glue plasticard to the edges of the opening (coamings?) which will allow you to sit a complete top structure on it (this would mean that you would not need tape and the waterproofing would (might) be better.
Cheers
Danny

Hi Danny,

I'm not into race competition with the boat, just a straight line speed run...it used to have a cockpit thing on top, bit I couldn't get on with it, so off it came.

I was wondering if there was a flexible material that I could just cut a cover out of and tape it down? I wondered about using something similar to the material that yacht sails are cut from? Is it called 'Mylar'...or something like that?

Hi Rich
If you only want a flat clear plastic sheet, try your local office supplier. They have A4 clear plastic document wallets to go in ring binders, some of which are very strong.
(Much cheaper than Mylar). If you want something a bit more rigid, clear polycarbonate sheet is available from about 1mm thick.
Cheers
Danny
