Can you re-fresh the page, say every minute, to see your new position and everyone else?

on the black banner at the top of the chart, you will see the word 'off' click it and it goes to an auto refresh, but only does it every 10 mins.

Alternatively, log out, log back in and it will tell you the new positions

No havn't bought extras- think it would be unfair as I think most are so it's down to strategy and skill just like real racing, just without the wet stuff or the yacht club afterparty- mores the pity.

Title: Re: Virtual Regatta
Post by: boatmadman on January 08, 2010, 10:28:36 pm
For you new racers, there is a 'ghost boat' that carries slots for starters part way into the race, in the last leg it carried 26000 places, so one night I jumped up  over 26k places!

You may find one day you will climb the placing ladder quite quickly - -  that is, IF you sail well!  {-)

Think because we've being sailing longer we'll get less points so it doesn't matter where he starts- he's got less time to gain more places.

I quite like the Jules Verne race.  It's just you against the clock. Should take between 50 and 65 days to go right round the world.
The boats are faster but can easily be managed as well as the Clipper race.
Brian? (Chingdevil) has joined but hasn't set off yet (facing the wrong way)!!  So much for breaking the record  %) %) {-)

Thanks guys, I'm looking to go self employed- a whole load of different problems I know, but they are ones I can cope with, and they will be down to me. Just sick and tired of big impersonal companies who don't know what resources they have, let alone how to use them.

Thats because you're facing into the wind!
Click on the compass and turn it to the opposite side. As you're doing this watch your speed indicator increase.
You will also see two red spots in front of your boat, these show the estimated position in 12 and 24 hours
(this should be used together with the wind forecast (0, 12, 24, 36 buttons) to get the best speed.
You can also change from "Spi" to "Jib" sails, which will alter your speed.
When you log on, the opening screen has "more info" which tells you all about the game.
Hope this helps.
Cheers

Hi Tom
The Jules Verne is just you against the clock.
You can keep your eye on the other boats courses, but the wind might have changed  %) %) :-))

Not joining us for the "Clipper" race?  This leg has nearly finished but if you join now, you'll be all ready for the next leg.
None of us can win the whole event as you are only allowed to drop 3 legs in the total race, and this is the 5th leg,
but I seem to think we're just having a little "Mayhem challenge" for each leg  :-)) %) %) {-)

Cheers and good luck

dont know whats going on. every time i check my position the boat seems to have done a 180 from where i was heading. i reset it again with 751km to go. it is now  750km so i have made some progress but whether it stays going in that direction only time will tell.

Ingore the distance to the next bouy - ITS AS THE CROW FLIES (direct line)!!

I think the main problem is that throughout the day you need to adjust your course , I was only able to do this in the Morning, Lunchtime and then the evening , there are add ons you can buy , Ie auto sails , course point changes etc but that I feel would take the fun out of it, and of course I'm sure Nobody here as bought any have we.. :police: <*< :police:

So am I.
According to the regatta forum, not only do some buy the "extras" package, but run another programme with 'polars' (??) and steering settings ...
Taking it too seriously, I think!
I prefer to think that us Mayhemmers are having "a race within a race", and have enjoyed the last leg. Roll on Feb.

Just so Andy doesn't feel too embarrassed even 'proper' skippers do it ...

In the REAL Clipper Race -

"Cork hits rock in Java Sea
14 January 2010

Cork, one of ten 68-foot ocean racing yachts competing in the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race has struck a rock in the Java Sea, around 200 nautical miles north east of Jakarta.

All 16 crew have been safely evacuated to two sister yachts, Team Finland and California. All are safe and next of kin have been informed.

Falmouth Coastguard is working with local agencies to ensure that the situation is being constantly monitored.

The Irish entry was sailing in 20-knot winds when she struck a rock off the small island of Gosong Mampango at 2018 GMT, 13 January (0418 local time, 14 January).

The yacht was competing in the fifth race of the biennial global challenge which left Geraldton, Western Australia for Singapore on 3 January 2010.

Initial reports from skipper Richie Fearon stated that the boat is lying on her side on the rock with the toe rail under water and that some hull damage has occurred. Because the winds were increasing, the crew evacuated to the island as a precaution. Competitors Team Finland and California were in the vicinity and immediately stood by off shore. The skipper and crew of Cork have subsequently used their life rafts to transfer to the waiting boats and all are now safely on board. Team Finland’s skipper Rob McInally is relaying updates with both the race organisers and the coastguard agencies".

Maybe that's what you ran into Andy  {-)

You can still get to the Jules Verne race and it is still going on!!!

Its a bit of a roundabout way of getting in, but it works -

go to

click "play/register" (do NOT sign in with the box in the top left corner)
enter your login and pw

and there you are  :-))
You have to do this every time (at the mo) as the top login box takes you to the page withour the JV listed.

Title: Re: Virtual Regatta
Post by: omra85 on January 24, 2010, 10:51:15 am
Kim, you start off where the pilotboat is (it sets off at the same time but travels slowly). So in 3 hours you should not lose much.
It mal look bad because all the boats will be bunched together so you can lose or gian thousands in the early stages.
If you log into Clipper (you've forgotten that one ... heading due South??) and search for "pilotboat", you can see its basic track.
This also explains your "off course" starting position in the Clipper race - the pilotboat goes the most direct route, even if it doesn't make it!

Once you've registered, you keep the name for all races.
The start was a disaster, the French forum went MAD!!
Half the boats (including mine) were registering 13.7 knots, but after an hour, had gone nowhere.
I reckon Andy tied us all up to the start bouy  O0 {-)
Anyway, they restarted at about 1.30pm so off we go.
At the moment, out of 27000 skippers, the pilot boat is 619th  :o  What's that about??
Presumably, if you started now, you'd be 620th  {:-{ {:-{

Who's been repainting their boats then .....  :-)) :o

No Ian,I think it is 6.ooam for GB
"Departure from Qingdao: 02 March at 7:00 am GMT+1 (Paris local time)" according to OKdiver1.
Hpwever, the "sign in" page says 06.00 GMT+1, so I've asked which it is!

Don't forget that the server will be down for 3 hours between 11.00hrs and 18.00hrs (1000 hrs to 1700hrs ??) tomorrow (Mon) but the JV winds look steady so we should be ok.

I know this was about the last leg, but just a point of interest - apparently it is common to ask if someone will steer(crew) your boat, if you are away.
As its a long race this time, and anyone is away, can we have volunteers to crew.
I am here most of the time but in bed between 11pm and 7.00am (beauty sleep!!) so can do any other time, but I may need help myself on 7th March 10.00am to 5.00pm if the wind is tricky.
Just PM each other with sign in details and leave it up to someone else   %) {-)
NO responsibility will be accepted for lost places  :o :o {-)

Hi Craig, I've had confirmation that the start time is 6:00 am GMT, so you can work yours out from that.
It will be evening your time so you'll be able to look after your start. Let me know (PM) if you're going to be away for any length of time, and I'll steer for you.

No extras for me (apart from the 150hp Yamaha outboard)  %%

I had a 105E and a Mark 1 - thin wheels and a stopping distance measured in miles ...  %)
Plus, on a hot summers day, the joy of feeling your BriNylon shirt glued between your back and the luxury vinyl seat - ah, the memories  :-))

Cheers

PS, joining us in the regatta Dicky?  :-)) {-) %%
I used to race a 105E. well the Broadspeed Version of it. Group 5 Saloon Cars. Fibre glass boot bonnet and doors, plexiglass windows, one bucket seat full cage. Steel Crank, Hepolite Pistons and a 40 80 80 40 Kent Camshaft, twin 40 DCOE Weber Carbs and 4 branch exhaust, 103 HP, and fantastic fun. Only had 51/2 inch rims and 185 tyres. Suspension totally rebuilt. We called it a Ford but really there was not much Ford in it! Those were the days. Wheel to wheel with Imps and Mini Coopers. magic!
