has anyone seen this unusual bow design. supposed to be extra efficient in rough going. http://www.ulsteingroup.com/kunder/ulstein/cms66.nsf/pages/shipdesign.htm?open&qnfl=flash#shipdesign/frontpage/shipdesign.itm

Some fascinating hull shapes there.
The Coast Guard vessel seems to have a strange "gap" in the base of the hull behind the bow. I wonder what precise purpose that serves?
The Ice Breaker is a fascinating shape.
Thanks for pointing me to their Site.

One of the boys on here are building some thing along this ship. Can't remember who or where the thread is. I'm sure if he reads this post he'll post a link. O0

Roger,
I would suggest that the "strange 'gap'" is there because she has a for'd azimuth thruster which can swing up to be housed out of the way. When swung up, sometimes (but not always) the thruster may be capable of being used as a transverse thruster.

Thanks, Barry. Looks logical. May be helpful if a Coast Guard vessel needs to get in close in shallow water.
Sorry I am so thick!

Also when entering/leaving harbour and berthing. 'Sitting down' on the extended thruster can spoil your whole day. :o
