With the argies aggitating over the Falkland Islands again, it made me go all jingolistic and think of HMS Clyde. Sirmar has a model of this vessel at 1\48th(?) scale.
This makes the model a good size of around 65 inches.
Anyone built Clyde? Pics, comments, how difficult to build etc? Might get one if it kicks off again.

I have a kit sitting to get started fully
and I would Recomend it to anyone the fittings and hull are well worth it :-))

the running set from Sitek is a must also here is a picture of one of the props agains my mouse

I have seen and built plenty of Sirmar kits and I have to say I think this is the best yet
I have not started this fully as I want to clear my bench of everything first
then I am looking forward to this build as it will be challenging :-))

Awesome! What a great looking prop too!
I know the (almost) sister ships are available elsewhere in smaller scale but this looks one imposing model at this size.

Cheers guys, it was well thought out this Clyde and all the masters were made by a pro pattern maker who works for a museum, he is also doing some other stuff for me. My mate Baz has got one and his is only in the beginning stages of the build, but, looking good so far. She is one BIG beasty, I reckon you could run it from a car battery and make it sail almost indefinately with the right motors etc.
Plus, you can get some pretty decent 1/48th Helo kits too, we have got two Chinooks and two Seakings so far, OH and an Apache Long bow!

Is it because she is chartered to the MOD by VT or maybe because she is a Fishery Protection vessel?

I think it was only for see trials this was done
when it came to the clyde for a visit prior to going to the Falkland the bow had know name on it

but if you look at the picture of the stern you can see the standard name on the rear of the hull in red
and on the stern the pennant number but it looks as if it has been a poor attempt to cover the builders markings

Yes, Paul Freshney confirms that she was flying the Red Ensign while on builder's trials when the name was painted on the bow.

that is differant from the normal RN ships then due to them being privately owned
when the Type 45's are launched they go down the slip with the White ensign flying (PR and all that guff)
but when they are towed out of the dry dock when the last of the running gear has ben fitted
then they are flying the RFA ensign and continue to do so until they have been commisioned
it used to be the Red ensign but this was changed some time back
but even then they did not have any normal mechant markings such as names of the ship on the bow

I believe so the 3 normal River class Mersey, Tyne and Severn have had good reports
the Clyde has used the same hull as the others but some of the fittings such as the doors and other similar
equipment was re-designed for the Clyde to with stand the south atlantic weather
the front of the superstructure also differs slightly and then the fully equipment outfit has been altered a good bit
the Clyde is listed as being longer by about 2mts this is because of the overhang on the fligtdeck
but the basic hull is the same

Hms Clyde is a pretty good ship Martin.The charter requirements was for her to be available 320 days of the year,so far they have acheived 97.5% of that,not too bad compared to the the Castle class they replaced.

Just realised, those ships boats are 6 inches long. Hmmmmmmmm.

yes they are bigger than most ships boats :}
