Just as an after thought to the Falklands thread! What was the only ship in the Royal navy to pipe "battle stations" as oppossed to "action atations"?
Any takers? Paul... ;) :-)
-
HMS Victorious when lent to the US Navy in WW2?
-
Nahh, the answer is in the question!
Paul... :-)

HMS Battle...?
-
The Conqueror sunk the Belgrano so it's a reasonable assumption.
-
HMS Sheffield
-
Nope!
Flippin eck? A further clue there were only four ships in the class and they where all soled to either Chile or Brazil or something such.
Paul...
-

Paul... :-)
-
HMS Ardent

Paul... :-)

I THANGYOU !

OK Paul for us uninitiated Merchant chaps what is the difference between Action Staions and Battle Stations?
-
In the RN, its almost always been action stations since day 1, the USN always use battle stations, but, it basically is the same thing, the point was Battleaxe was the only RN ship to use the term regularly.
Paul... :-)
-
I thought the US Navy used 'General Quarters'?
-
The US navy usually pipe general quarters, all hands man what ever, "battle stations", "emergency stations" etc etc, general quarters means everyone goes to there allocated space depending on wether it be battlle stations or what ever.

Ok Paul.
I am probably going to regret asking the obvious question but " WHY " was Battleaxe doing its own thing then ?
is there a reason for her to be different ?
regards Sub.
-
It was because of the name, Battleaxe. Thats what I was told anyway.
Paul... :-)

ok guys now we have done that one, what about this? This one is not open to marine engineers, ie Bunkerbarge or Bryan ETC, cos they will know, this is for the layman!
What is the gadget called that stops the water comming in through the prop tube/ shaft on a real ship? Don't worry guys, this thread is intended to acheive more knowledge of the real thing if you have only ever built models and not been there for real on a real ship!
Paul... :-)
-
...Cutlass Bearing...
-
Nope! :-)
Paul...
-
Stuffing box?
-
Nope, LOL!
Paul... :-)
-
so am i ETC now Paul. {-)
Bob
-
It would be unfair Bob, all marine engineers will know what the collective term is for that particular bit of kit.
Paul... :-)
-
It develops a whole new set of names when it leaks mind you!!
-
Yeah before I switched to air engineering and then flying, we had an incident on the Dumbarton Castle where the "shaft space flooded" and the *(^$£* accused me of not doing my rounds over Easter leave!
Erm, it happened all the time, the ship was dead for two weeks and some siilly fool didn't put the shaft brakes on, so the starboard one turned every time something went past it, it was just when they where trying the Sandown class out in Rosyth too.
Spooky or what, you know what I mean don't ya Richard?
Paul... :-)
-
a gland :-))

Ehem... While I acknowledge Bunkerbarge is a member of the True Faith (albeit he has gone over to the Dark Side of reciprocating plumbing) I am sure that Bryan Young would be the first to point out that he has not reached that exalted state, being deep-rooted in the infidel Deck tradition. Bryan is the Sage of Whitley Bay, a modeller of the first rate and - although prone to biting ankles in a Meldrewish manner - a most generous and helpful soul as I would be the first to confirm. But an Engineer??? I must away to have a good snort of lub oil and steam. >>:-(
