Title: Virtual Regatta - 7th Leg (China to USA)
Post by: omra85 on March 01, 2010, 08:33:15 pm
Hi all,
The big day is upon us. 6.00am (in the UK) 2nd March 2010 will soon be here.

Has everyone polished their pintles and emptied their hawse holes  O0

Anybody changed names?  I'm running GinaT and Mayhem omra85.
The "Mayhem Rescue Boat" will stay firmly attached to the pilotboat!
Who is "Murder'n'Mayhem"?

Lets teach Johnny Foreigner a thing or two about the British Stiff Upper Leach  :-))

Go get 'em chaps - and other stirring stuff  {-) {-)

Cheers
Danny

Log in then go to "My Profile" on the top menu bar.
Go to "My Account" then change your nickname.
You'll still log in the same but your boat will show as your new nickname.
Cheers
Danny
PS The name will automatically change on all your friends' lists.

PPS Someone has changed to Murder'n'Mayhem, but I can't see who is "missing" of my original list???

Talking about madness, have you noticed that the 1st 5 leaders are heading towards a land mass , and are behind everybody but yet they are in the lead !!
Title: Re: Virtual Regatta - 7th Leg (China to USA)
Post by: boatmadman on March 03, 2010, 01:57:54 pm
Yeah, the positions are calculated by 'line of sight ' I think.

I reckon those 5 leaders are computer generated to follow a straight line from start to finish, no one would deliberately go that way would they? Or is there a hidden sea way up there somewhere? %%
Title: Re: Virtual Regatta - 7th Leg (China to USA)
Post by: omra85 on March 03, 2010, 08:22:33 pm
The names of the first 5 keep changing so I wonder how many are actually up there - we only see five, but there may be another thousand up there.
Oh Goody  {-) {-) {-)

I think they have bought some sort of auto pilot or one of these grib things they keep on about thats supposed to tell you the best course  %) %)
Well it obviously doesn't replace common sense!

Don't forget to wave to them   ;D ;D ;D

Title: Re: Virtual Regatta - 7th Leg (China to USA) - crew vacancies for next leg
Post by: boatmadman on March 07, 2010, 04:45:11 pm
The owner of Mayhem n Madness and Ocean Mayhem wishes to advertise for a complete replacement crew for each boat.

The previous crews have been unceremoniously chucked overboard for incompetence shown in the complete debacle that was the early stages of the current leg.

The Captains have a chance to redeem themselves yet, but 2 rooms (?) have been reserved in Alcatraz for their arrival in USA in the likely event of failing to improve on their current performance. Further,  'Old Sparky' the electric chair is being transported to Alcatraz and will be ready for new sittings shortly.

If either of these boats appear to take off in a direction commensurate with desertion, please SINK them.

Disgruntled Owner.

In line with the latest Mayhem 'guidelines', its been renamed Mayhem'n'chaos.
It was going to be Mayhem'n'Suggs, but we've got too many 'Madness' boats already  %)
It has gone the Northern route and although not far behind the 'leaders' is actually far behind the "Southern bunch".

Speaking of which, GinaT is progressing well, with Harry (MHem the long sail) pushing her transom  %) %) :embarrassed:

It's easy to find the ones at the back - just look for an area with absolutely NO wind, and there they are - in the middle of it  {-) {-)

Keep it up chaps

I suppose I'm the last to notice but the "wind squares" are different sizes!!
The ones on 31.xx N are 50 miles across, whereas the ones on 41.xx are only 44 miles across  :o
I suppose its to compensate for the curvature of the Earth, but as they look the same size on the screen, I assumed up to now, that they were the same!
Might make a difference when plotting a course - assuming that Harry and I are not the only ones aiming for anything more specific than East'ish  %%  :P
Good tip:
Point the boat in vaguely the right direction, tie up the wheel, THEN go to bed  {-) {-) {-)

Yippee - I've just finished the Jules Verne Round the World virtual race.
Mayhem'n'Chaos took 60 days, 21 hours, 42 mins
GinaT took 62 days, 13 hours, 52 mins.

These are actual REAL TIME days - wind changes 7.00 am and 7.00 pm EVERY Day (sometimes up to 6 course changes in a day)

Ocean Mayhem is about to finish but Semperatis, Antipodean Mayhem and TomatCrewe are still battling out there.

62days, 4hrs,4mins to finish the round world race.  :-))

A very close race with GinaT , 9hrs 48mins difference over 62 days.

Title: Re: Virtual Regatta - 7th Leg (China to USA)
Post by: omra85 on March 12, 2010, 08:42:12 pm
The finish positions don't seem to make any sense
Mayhem'n'Chaos - 25642  (60 days ...)
GinaT               -  25630  (62 days ...)

so I think the total time is a better indicator.
Bit of a relief after all this time - yes, beers etc are needed  O0
Cheers

my final position was puzzling as well, 25000 plus, whereas the position just before finishing was under 2000. It does say temporary position though, perhaps it has to wait until the last racer comes in or something?

nearly there. if vodafone hadnt cut off my internet service before the new ISP was ready to connect i would be finished too. rats to vodafone. sailing for a week with no chance of correcting my course or contacting danny to steer. thats my excuse and i'm sticking to it. I have a lot to learn about sailing.

After 23 days (seemed more like 230 at times) they finished within 2 hours of each other.

Start - point boat due West (for 1 hour) - forget boat

Day 3 - remember boat, log on, find boat 480 miles West of San Francisco - turn left

Day 4 - forget to check forecast, sail into middle of 100 mile diameter "no wind" circle

Day 5 - drift

Day 10 - remember boat - find it heading toward Antarctica - turn left

Day 11 - break computer - unable to log on

Day 20 - log on and find boat back at San Francisco - turn left (for 1 hour) .........

Ring any bells anyone  %) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-)

No, nothing as yet, but the "real" boats are starting tomorrow (20th) at 6.00pm local time.
Now according to the World Time converter, this would be 2.00am on 21st in the UK.
I can't see the French being awake at that time so I imagine they'll start later in the morning of the 21st (7.00am??)

Getting twitchy now ......  %)
