Right i have had a pair of schottel drives(the big ones) on the shelf for far too long now .
So i want to build a new tug for them but am un decided as to where to fit them , fore , aft ???,
so a little help would be appreciated .the plan shows some different set ups which i could use as well as the comon one that i have seen on the ponds , the thing is does the position realy matter if a skeg is fitted .The other option is to buy a third and build a ROTOR tug .

This is how mine is being set up, using 3 drives. (1761-small drives) Umi's SDM tug uses twin schottels, 1 bow-1 stern, though they are offset so the flow from the forward does not go directly to the stern drive. Any photos I have seen of forward drive ASD tugs has the drives well forward of center. For a little different hull layout, look for photos of the Falkenstein.

Here is a PDF for the SDM built in Spain...
I wish I would have had this when I built my model.. {:-{

I almost set mine fore and aft on the centerline, but I
was able to contact the original design engineer, and he
sent me a truncated diagram of the drive positions.

Thankyou guys , that answers a few Q's regarding where to put them , in my first position they are on the center line but i was worried about prop wash from the forward prop to the aft prop .Off setting the props will reduce this .
Umi on the pdf plan the hull is not too clear if there are fixed rudders for and aft , can you help with more detail plz.

oops here i go asking questions without reading the info supplied.
quote
As before, the engines face in opposite
directions to turn Rolls-Royce type US 205
FP Z-Drives, mounted fore and aft and each
offset from the vessel centreline –
the forward unit to starboard and the aft to port.
There are matching slotted skegs at both bow and stern.

Oh wow :o , you are a star Umi . that picture is fab ,
ok the model will have supports around the hull to protect the drives and the skeg's .
But i am supprised that the bottom is so flat , which will make moulding easier .
Like the SDM i made using fixed props i think i will make a box first to house the gubbins and then with the deck fitted i can turn the whole thing upside down and fill out the sides with polly-styreen , give it a coat of PVA and paper and then glass it .
The supports and skegs can be added after, this is going to be a lump of a tug if i keep to the scale size of the original :-)) .

I've got two on the stern of my "nangee", but I think they are wasted there and I'm thinking of replacing with a one steerable Kort. Then doing something with the Schottels, one forward one to the stern, if I can find a suitable hull, or I may have to contstruct one.
I do prefer to start with a ready made glass hull though.
