I am after a sound module that i can record one sound on (a Gas Turbine) and nothing elese i know that there is a new one out but its quite expenive and i wanted to see if there was anything elese on the market before i get on of the new ones any tips

All of these will do as long as you only wish to replay a fixed sound or sounds. If you want to modulate the sound by remote control e.g. increase the "revs"of the engine with the throttle, then they won't.

It appears that they sell the kit with or without the chip, but dont seem to list the chip separately. Googling, there are some UL suppliers of similar sounding items. Finding somebody willing to sell the ISD17xxx in quantities less than a truckful might be a problem. I used an earlier version years ago, before Maplin figured out it was a useful item and therefore discontinued the line.

I built a board from a magazine article called some thing like "can be anything" that i think had this chip still works great my mate wants it to play messages to fellow sailors in his boat for some reason. there was a board that was available at the time for few pounds, it was a good project

240 seconds recording time. The other ones is 120 seconds and is now discontinued.

Good find - the only trouble for the average home builder is that that particular one in the link is a surface mount device, and would present difficulties using with a chip socket. The only ones that are DIL appear to be a 16 second one (great for gun fire, hooter, etc., but probably limited for engines), and a 16 minute one, both with different pin-outs and therefore not usable with that particular circuit. Aren't some outfit called Action doing something like that?

It not me that needs one - I built my own years ago before Maplin deleted sound recording chips from their portfolio when they found out they could be useful.

The last one is a neat little MP3 player which you can interface with pushbuttons (or servo operated microswitches) or a microcontroller (e.g. Picaxe) via a serial link for advanced operation. It's tiny and quite inexpensive. You will need an amplifier for reasonable volume. Maplin do a couple of Velleman chip based amplifier kits which are okay.
