Im looking for something that gives LOTS of smoke in proportion, it won't drain the batteries very much and a good price.
Can they run on 6 volt or just 12 volt?
Am I correct in saying you can't have black smoke?
I would like to know more please, im interested. You can PM me with details if its easier

Hi Nick, I think the only way to get black smoke is over prop and over volt a fast set up, the magic smoke from your esc is def black :-)), I know from experience!
If anybody has the answwer to black smoke they are on a winner! I have tried all manner of oils, additives, soot, carbon, etc etc, and it never goes black!

Has anyone tried diesel fuel? if this is burnt rich it should give black smoke - at least it does if the turbo fails on a Volvo B40 AQAD! :embarrassed: I guess it depends whether the smoke unit can handle this? Fire hazard %%

yep, tried diesel oil, old engine oil, brake fluid, power steering fluid, 2 stroke oil, soot, baby oil, the maplins disco smoke stuff, carbon in oil, it never goes black :((
mine is the dangerous hot wire smoke unit, I would have thought the mini mister type with water may have some sort of additive added to the water might produce a black colour, without the droplets damaging the boat, but up to now nobody has the answer!

The trouble with adding stuff to water is that it only colours the liquid, not the vapour. Our US customer Dain Webster (aka H2OSmokey) has threatened to play with one of these:

I have one of the MMB Foggy units in my model and I was told by Mark not to add anything to the water as it would damage the unit, (I will take his word for it).
I am curious though, why do modellers insist on simulating black smoke, black smoke is unburnt fuel, this means the engine is not working efficeiently or has a problem or it is not smoke at all but soot build up in the exhaust that is loosened when an engine is worked hard.

Sometimes black smoke was made for effect.
I remember reading about a IOM Steam packet boat producing large amounts to drift on to a newly arrived compeditor in Douglas harbour.

If your after a 12 volt system the smoke unit by Hunter Systems is very good. Its not water but uses oil, one bottle is supplied with the unit, it cost me £37.65 with postage and arrived the next day. You do need a small fan fitted behind to get the best out of it, I think Hunter can supply this, but I used a small computer fan I had and smoke it certainly does !! I have no interest in the firm other than a customer.

My requirements for black smoke, the smoke unit I have is in the jaws boat Orca, the engine was hammered, and churned out black smoke, from the exhaust, and later in the film from the engine hatch also, so yes black smoke signifies a knackered engine! :-)), 2which is good for me :}
