Title: HMS Brave Borderer 1/24 scale
Post by: 6705russell on May 14, 2010, 07:19:48 am
I will be trying to make a start on my Brave Borderer soon, she is 1/24 scale and a superb fibre glass moulding that is one of four pulled from the plug.  Next job is to source the fittings from various suppliers, does anyone know where to get 1/24 scale torpedos and racks?

Thanks

Russ

I presume you mean Precision Controls.
I have some of their stuff from a while ago and it is not that good.
Try John Haynes, his gun kits are very good. Also look at HSL mouldings.

Hi Russ, that is a superb hull. It certainly looks 'spot on', especially the bow profile and chine lines. Even the knuckle has been moulded on the gunwales.  :-) I hope you will post pictures of the build. The Brave class was for many, the ultimate coastal craft, and it's great to see a 1:24 scale moulding of this quality. Stern pictures of BB are few but I found this one which may be useful in the future. She's moored inbord of a German Ferocity class.

Russ by the late 50s early 60s the colour admiralty was using for most warships was BS 381C 676 Light Weatherworks Grey.
I got a 500mll tin from White Ensign Models for my destroyer of that period.  It only comes in gloss but they recommend  for use
with airbrushes a 50/50 mix with a good quality white spirit and it ends up a good silk finish. I used mine about 55% paint and found that
perfect for spraying. If you look at my build blog you will see the finish which I think is pretty good especially as its the first time I had
used my airbrush.
Hope this helps

Power will be three brushless motors, undecided on type or size at the minute, any ideas/configurations?

A little more work as been done, shafts/rudders fitted and the working trim tab made, next step is to make the linkages for the rudders and the trim tab along with fitting the brushless motors - 200w rated.

when you try to work out the links you may find the top ones going through the hull may need to be able to pivot as we as allow the rod through, you may find it easier to have it spring loaded open with a stop and use a cable ( fishing trace wire) or look at the other boat that was built recently and the problem s he had and how he sorted it

its looking a lot better now by the way

hi ya there Rus nice build - have you had a chance to look at MartinDoonUnder's build of his BB - he has an operating rear trim tabs.  This might give you some ideas.  Just out of curiosity, have your prop shafts got to go further back into the hull or are the P support brackets in the wrong place ie. too far back?
As you probably know, the prop boss should mate up against the face of the P bracket.  There should be very little gap between prop and bracket (if any).
Title: Re: HMS Brave Borderer 1/24 scale
Post by: 6705russell on December 02, 2010, 08:44:38 pm
Unfotunately because the p brackets are the wrong size I couldn't move them much further aft, the props would hit the hull.  I have been looking at Martins build of the Borderer, fantastic work and will be operating the trim tab very much the same..

May I make a comment about the props being un supported near the end I think you will need an extra bracket just behind the prop or it will shake itself to death at the recs of a brushless motor .

Point taken on board reference the prop supports but i have not had a problem with the 1/12 Tamar and that runs on 800kv brushless with the same prop set up?  I will keep on eye on them when water testing next year, shouldnt see a problem with them.

It's a shame the p frames were short ,however, your exposed shafts should certainly create less drag than full length prop tubes. Nothing is perfect but your arrangement is much closer to the Vosper original than most.  :-)

Great pix Intel..
You're right Russ, but every little helps......... the +30% over brushed equivalents is definately .........no drag.
What size/make props have you chosen? They look like quality items.
Title: Re: HMS Brave Borderer 1/24 scale
Post by: 6705russell on December 08, 2010, 01:45:55 pm
The outer props are Sitek,s, if you look closely the middle prop is a different make/design, i have had the two outer ones for a while, i will need to source a third eventually to match them up....

Nice items, they look 40mm+ in size. I cannot recall the diameter of the original Vosper (turbine power) props being listed in any of the usual reference sources I checked recently, although I was researching 'Perkasa' rather than the 'Braves' specs on the usual web sites. This size has remained a mystery. :-)

Just for info The Braves were fitted with Type 974 Radar with the Tx/Rx in a watertight? compartment supporting the Half Cheese Scanner
The whole system rotated at 24rpm and the power/signals were taken from the unit by a series of slip rings.

Russ, useful site for  British radars is the RN museum of radar and communications - bit of a rigmorole negotiating the site
but can be well worth it - I will have to make a type 960 for my next build and it was the only place where I could get a
clear picture.

Ned Feb 63, up at Mercury clearing the remains of the snow before going on draft April 63 in Las Palmas and
en-route to Simonstown took us 10 weeks to get there as we were flagshowing at every major (and some minor)
ports along the way. It was just 6 months of runs ashore until we had a bad collision with the SAS Pietermaritburg
and one of the lads was killed and we had to come back about 3 months early - when we did the repairs on the hull
she got the enclosed mast and 965 fitted. I left december and went up to the commcen at Fort Southwick.

6705 russell,
What an absolutely beautiful build of this model. I am currently starting to build the Perkasa 1/24 scale and this gives me something to aim for. Also your excellent photos answer many questions especially with powering the vessel. Thank you for your  very informative and excellent postings.
Regards,
derfledermause.

Really interested where you got the moulding from: I can't find a source of Brave class hull & superstructure, only the slightly different Perkasa variant.

She looks sweet! The curl of the bow waves is ever so realistic, very clean wave form.

Hi Willrob,

I believe Kingston Mouldings still produce the Brave Class Model, top quality mouldings from here too.

I have details for the steering gear arrangement for the full size craft if anyone goes ahead and builds another model, and feels it would be of use, just send a PM.

Regards,

John

Thanks guys.  I've been 'lent' a completed but neglected Precedent 1/24 Perkasa (1250mm) and it got me thinking, could it be converted to a Brave class boat (patriotism & all that). Hence the enquiry about the superstructure / bridge moulding...

On reflection, I think it's more sensible and rational to simply put the Perkasa through a modest refit to get it shipshape again.  Aside from the aesthetics, the running and electrical gear is fairly 'vintage'. The radio is 2 channel Acoms from - I reckon - about 1990 and there is interesting 'growth' on the servos and general rat's nest of bell wiring inside the hull.  Think it is time to start again there.

There's a single shaft and I can't get any life out of the motor, which is wired to run from two 6V sealed lead acid batteries in series. The motor is about the diameter of a coke can (and about half the length) but other than that no distinguishing marks.

What replacement would be good for this hull? I'd like the boat to plane properly but not stand on it's transom & try to fly...  Brushed or brushless? There doesn't seem to be a lot of difference in price between  a decent (850 size?) brushed motor plus ESC and a brushless motor / esc but I may be comparing apples and pears!  What size brushless outrunner (Kv / watts) would you go for?  Presumably don't want it to run at ridiculous RPM so low Kv is best?  Batteries? I have a 4000 mAh 3s (11.1 volt) LiPo battery from my big motor glider.  Would that be suitable?

I've read that a 50mm prop (3 bladed?) would be about the right size for this ship.  Do you agree?  Is a water cooled motor / ESC a good idea or an unnecessary complication?  How & where does one install the water inlet; does the system operate by simple positive 'ram' effect through the water?

Sorry for all the questions & thanks in advance for any answers.  All advice gratefully received!

Also try this site, they concentrate in 1/24 scale patrol boats mainly British.
