Title: Mtroniks Viper 15
Post by: BJ on May 28, 2010, 08:26:02 pm
Can any of you "leccies" advise a "nitro head" what is the maximum size of motor that a Mtroniks Viper 15 will support? Are they "beefy" enough to support a 540 type motor and if so how "hot" a motor?

Thanks

Hi, M-Tronics suggest you use a 10 amp fuse with a "15". It is more than likely you will blow the fuse with that type of motor, utterly dependant on the prop that you are going to use.

I usually check what amperage the motor draws under load and the stall current and choose an ESC accordingly.

Thanks
I have an Mtroniks Viper 15 from a old boat with a 380 motor and an inherited hot 540 from my son's electric buggy of some 20 years ago. I will risk the 540 with a fuse - it only has to cruise gently not attempt any speed records!

The main question is,is that ESC a Viper 15,or a Viper Marine 15,as they are not the same animal. A viper 15 will allow you to run a 540 motor down to a maximum of 15 turns. However,if it is a Viper Marine 15,then the maximum load that it can take is just 15A.To give you an example of what I mean,a 15T motor can draw over 200A peak, and a 15T limit ESC can provide 250A continuous drain. With that kind of power allowance, you can run a Graupner speed 600 race motor with no problems at all, couple that ability with the fact that the ESC is waterproof, and you'll not need to buy a marine specific ESC. :-))

Don't like it: it whistles. However the electric screwdriver and the meccano bevel gears in the paddle tug are so noisy anyway that it may not matter. But if it does, it is due for an ACTion replacement!

Mtroniks Marine 15 is the most sold ESC in the UK. It has outsold every other Controller in its catergory and is still doing the business. I think actions speak loader than any words can. I have sold thousands since the humble Mtroniks speedo was released. I have returned to Mtroniks maybe 10 in that time and have had all replaced within seven days at no cost. That is a record!
