Hello!
Yesterday it was time for the annual celebration of our "archipelago boats", and as usual the steamers play the leading role. The latest addition to the fleet also got a chance to show off, "Gällnö" has just been delivered from builders in Finland and hasn't been put into traffic yet. Thanks all for your comments, it was a fine evening. Just to clarify, I didn't take any of the pictures and thats probably for the best! The photographer of the first bunch of pictures is one of the guys running the site thats dedicated to the smaller passenger vessels around the coast. Lovely stuff, Hama.
Why can small countries like Finland and Sweden do these things so well and we haven't a bloomin' clue?
When I worked for Volvo in Gotheborg, I would often spend the Autumn evenings wandering round admiring the VERY old steamers that gave trips round the area or went to the many islands. I also enjoyed the finest fish dishes I've ever tasted on board some that had been turned into restaurants.
I was very tempted by some of the ships, modelwise, they were so handsome.
And all in proper (not "heritage") service.

Ahem Vint' I think you'll find we don't do as badly as you think over here- off the top of my head public service steam boats in Britain;
- SY Gondola, Coniston Water,
- SS Sir Walter Scott, Loch Katrine,
- SL Alaska, Thames,
- SL Nuneham, Thames,
- SS Sheildhall, (?)
- PS Monarch, Isle Of Man,
- PS Kingswear Castle (?)
And there are a few more that I can't remember, plus PS Medway Queen is under full reconstruction.

Greg, you could fit them in one little corner of Gotheborg harbour. And THEN they have a museum of floating craft TOO! and that's only what I saw and only Gotheborg. I didn't get to any other bigger ports.
And most of what you list are indeed Heritage, rather than standard service vessels.
That's fine of course, better wet than dead whatever they are.
You're lucky to be involved in a genuine old boat with an assured future. There aren't that many and the British have no interest, either publicly or in a Government/corporate way. As the owner of an historic boat registered with National Historic Ships or whatever they're called I know that only too well ,although response to her forced sale (health reasons) on ebay has been far stronger than I'd expected even though two have been timewasters so far.

Out of those I mentioned only Kingswear is a non-regular service vessel- but she's still funded mostly by passenger numbers, all the others are regular service vessels- and as I said there are more.
We also have many museums full of craft here, Windermere Steam Boat Museum, Bristol Docks, Chatham Docks, Thames Boat Museum (where Donola is housed) etc- but you hit the nail on the head when you say it's the general public and the image these boats have that is the real problem here.

What's happening at the Windermere Steam boat Museum, it seems to have been shut for renorvations for an awful long time.?

It's undergoing a restructure from the top down- the Lakeland Arts Trust are looking for a new MD- however they appointed a museum boat manager- Adrian Stone, an experienced boatbuilder who has taken responsibilty for the boats restorations and also for the workshop.
I'm trying to get a meeting with him sorted but havn't as yet.
