Title: Metcalf mouldings R.N.L.B. Scout
Post by: Dan.Lord on June 09, 2010, 10:24:43 am
Hi all, Well it's been several months since I finished my billings Calypso, & have now decided it's time for a new build. I've been looking at this kit, & rather fancy giving it ago.
Just a quick question, has anyone built one of these ? & if so any feedback on quality ease of build etc would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks Dan.

Have a look at Fatcat's home page. He is a relatively inexperienced builder who has made a brilliant job of building the Scout  :-))

Hey Dan,

I found the build to be quite enjoyable. Mikes very correct in the in-experienced bit - lets just say details of a few disected motors wont come to light, thats a private joke between me and mike. But you get the idea.

It was the first 'proper' kit i built and theres plenty of scope for adding your own details. Theres things i wish i would of done different but name a modeller who doesnt feel that way after a build.

All details are on my site, but if you need any help, feel free to ask.

Dan

Hi thanks for the info. Do you know if there has been any reviews done on it at all ? I'm thinking of doing the John Fison, which was the old Harwich boat, as I've sailed on her before she went to New Zealand. Cheers Dan.

There was a review published by Paul Freshney just before he became editor of Model Boats which would make it around 2006/2007 sometime,

Thanks for that Colin, I'll try and get the back issues. Cheers Dan.

Hi Dan,

Was going to say there was a review in model boats, but was beaten to it.

If you ring Metcalf, he will send you a photo cd of the build and finished thing. Personally, i'd say go for it. Its a good bit of kit for not a lot of money, its well worth it. The build apparently takes 300 hours or so but i dont keep track of it. I just did it as and when. I obtained the kit in June 2009 and completed it mid Jan 2010. I found the finished model is really heavy as i use two 7.5 amp lead acids just to make the bow sit on the water line. My build shows all. If you need any more phots, just ask and i'll see what i can do.

I'd 100 % have another metcalf kit, it was enjoyable and transforms into a very decent kit depending on the time you take on it.
