A quote by FLJ in "Australia's worst..." prompted me to find:

which leads to the lyrics of Poisoning Pigeons, Oedipus Rex, and many others.
Happy days! Tom Lehrer, Francoise Hardy, Millicent Martin on TW3, um - and Bernard Levin opining that all of life is a journey towards Mozart.
Anyone else with offbeat reminiscences?

Leonard Nimoy??
I thought he was banned from all recording studios in the world after the mind-numbingly awful "Bilbo Baggins" - sung on TV in full Star Fleet uniform with backing from a chorus of 60s 'chicks'. More cringeworthy than anything 'reality TV' has yet devised. Mind you, George Clooney included William Shatner's version of "Lucy in the sky with diamonds" in his Desert Island Discs, say that he would be inspired to cut off one of his legs and hollow it out to act as a canoe rather than having to listen to it......
"An evening wasted with Tom Lehrer" is still the most prized record in my collection, with Jake Thackray a close runner-up.

His 'Elements' is a masterpiece.
Those were the days of the great satirical revues - our modern comedians haven't got the education to compete... On this side of the pond Flanders and Swann were also doing similar work - compare their 'Thermodynamics' song.
And, of course, their 'Song of Patriotic Prejudice'. And 'Madiera', which contains some of the best prozeugma ever written - often quoted as the classic use of syllepsis. Will we see their like again? Not until we return to teaching Latin properly.....
-
And English.
-
And English.
Get the Latin right, English will follow. I can't understand how anyone can learn English without at least an initial grounding in Latin - it is the largest formative influence on the language.
And, as a structured language, it's a very good basis for programming...
-
And I always thought Linear A was the way to go.....

T'aint done much for their economy tho' :D
Mmmmmmmmmm, Plan instructions in Latin?? Now there's a thought.
-
How about the famous "Driving instructor" by Bob Newhart? Brilliant piece of work, it was played on the radio a couple of nights ago.
-
Mmmmmmmmmm, Plan instructions in Latin?? Now there's a thought.
Waste of time including them in any language half of the time..................."Real men don't need Instructions"
The stories I could tell you....................
BTW if you want true lyrical genius, try this bit of Lehrer:
"Our old Mess Sergeant's taste buds had been shot off in the war,
but his savoury collations add to our esprit du corps"
Kind of rolls round the mouth like soured cream, doesn't it?

I don't suppose Linear A did much for the Minoans, either...

At least they would be less ambiguous. Modern instructions seem to be moving away from phonetic agglutinative languages, and back to the earlier form of glyph-based communication, as Circlip seems to be suggesting. If pushed, I can transliterate Middle Egyptian (with frequent refernces to my Gardiner), but a modern set of instructions for a washing machine in multi-lingual glyphs often has me stumped.
I do have a friend who ekes out a precarious living translating Sumerian and Babylonian texts for Mid-Western bible colleges. Perhaps he can understand them better....
-
Are glyphs good for ekes then? If so, where can I buy a jar? It must, of course, be non-agglutinative as well as hypo-allergenic and with added liposomes - "because I'm worth it".

Rem acu tetigisti, FLJ, as always. Perhaps you should write assembly and operating instructions for your esteemed equipment in Backus-Naur Form? That is at least context-free, which would probably avoid much of the misunderstanding...

Given the size of the tome, it's quite a bargain - even if you only use it for pressing flowers....

Aiding and abetting the Creationists? Professor Dawkins would not approve. :((

Backus? Wasn't he the Greek god of wine? I'm all for that O0
As for context-free drawings, a bit of a self-contradiction methinks. I'll stick to CorelDraw12 if that's OK.

Thought he was the greek god of cigarettes??
No Dg thought about Latin instructions as a scape for Copyrite

There are not that many pure research posts in these topics - I suspect it's a case of "Once the rockets are up, who cares where they come down....", to return to the thread....
Besides, Dawkins is fixated on anti-creationsim. You could almost call it a religion.... %)

What do you expect? It's a model boats site not a digital extension of the Royal Society.

Yeah, yeah - I read it already; even bought the Tee shirt. No serious competition for Tom L, though; 82 this year and still causing sporadic offence.
"I'd like to take you now, on wings of song as it were, and try and help you forget for a while your drab, wretched lives."
Genius.

Last I heard of this person was that he was joining the Royal Shakespeare Company.....ho hum
" To be or not to be....that is totally illiogical captain "
Nuff said ?
-
Everybody say his own kurie eleison, doin' the Vatican rag!
and he rhymed "Try and hide" with "cyanide" - (even better than "prison" and "his'n)
Best last line - "and 'til they come to get me, I will hold your hand in mine".
What a man.
-

Gee, thanks FLJ, that's a really generous offer. And do the first half dozen of us get a P100 thrown in?

I don't suppose Linear A did much for the Minoans, either...
I always thought that the Minoans predated Latin by about as much as the Romans predated Linear A.
Anyway,
"Don't jump off the roof, Dad,
You'll make a hole in the yard"
Tommy Cooper
Then there is "Brother Gorilla" By Thackray, combining as it does bestiality and lack of respect for authority with optimism fulfilled, faith dashed, the eventual triumph of justice and a good story, well told.

Thanks for reminding me, Doc - I shall go forthwith to that place which I call 'workshop' and spoil myself (again) with the very best of Jake T. Personally I love a good b*m on a woman; it makes my day. To me it is palpable proof of God's existence a....posterior.
