I've decided to try building a semi-scale Type 24 frigate,based on GG's plan called the Paladin from MB Oct 2005. I've made some adjustments to the hull shape as follows:- The base of the hull is still the same at 3" wide,but I've used 9mm balsa for the hull base instead of just 6mm,and the deck level will be 3.25"wide in order to impart an outward lean to the hull sides. I've also lengthened the stempiece at the upper level,in order to increase the prow angle of the bow. The other adjustment that I've made to the plan,involves the stern of the boat,whereas GG used a simple sloped section from the hull base up towards the deck level,I've gone for CH's stepped rear hull shape. The reason for this is that it allows you to fit a stock rudder with no problems at all,provided that you reinforce the balsa with light ply first.
The reason for doing this is quite simple,having seen the astern response of my corvette,I'm going with what works for me. I'll post up pics of the build as it progresses.

this was the first plan build that I made. It was built the same year as the plan came out, and was builtas standard at the St Albans show in one weekend! This boat became the nightmere boat on the lake, zooming round, leaning right over. Great fun. Even in reverse it was fun!! It had a standard servo and a zebra 40 mhz radio as set up with a jr 400 size motor. On more that one occasion she was sunk by being rammed amidships, and even went up against a Happy Hunter, with dire results!!! The best one was by mistake, when running parallel with the Happy Hunter, I turned in to her stern and was drawn in to her wake wave, Paladin became totally submerged running underwater!! as soon as the Hunter manoveured away she popped up and carried on sailing.we done thi several times before she became waterlogged and stopped working!!! really good little runner though!

I had to go and buy more balsa today,because I'd forgotten the allow for the increased size of the bulkheads....DOH. :embarrassed:
The foredeck has been fitted,and the reinforcing ply plates for the rudder have been done. The motor mounting block has been glue in place,along with the servo cage. The rear deck,which can be seen below the hull has been cut out,along with a recess to allow me access the the rudder mount. In the third pic,you can see the amount of flare that there will be on the hull sides. Hopefully this will help to push the water away from the sides of the hull,and aid efficiency.I've dug out another ESC and 2.4 GHz receiver for her. I think that I may need to build a wee shelf,to keep the receiver as high as poss in the hull.

Another deviation from the GG plan,is that I'll be plating the hull with full sheets of balsa,rather than the patchwork quilt way of doing it. The wee Vosper has had several heavy hits to her flank whilst playing tag,and she's come away with no damage whatsoever,including a full speed strike from my Veron RBR.(Never let youngsters play with high speed boats,especially when they've never sailed before <*<). For the prow of the boat,I'll again be reinforcing it with brass angle iron,as I have on all my boats,it really does save the bows from damage, especially when the sides of your pond are slopes instead of vertical edges. :-))

And don't forget to cover the hull sides with Dope and Tissue paper, stiffens the structure and gives a good surface for painting.

Daft question I know,but would yacht varnish and tissue work just as well? I don't have the luxury of an outdoor shed or a garden for that matter,so everything has to be done indoors. The varnish is virtually odour free,though the paint isn't,so just how strong a smell is dope?

Dope tightens the tissue up and gives a surface that will grip cellulose spray cans colours. Yacht Varnish is a finishing coat.

I sanded mine down, sprayed varnish, sanded varnish sanded then sprayed with halfords primer and the green top deck handpainted with snot green from citadel......comes up a treat!

In the case of the Vosper klunk,she ended up with a total of 6 layers of varnish and two of paint,(hand brushed varnish,not spray).

Please excuse the fact that the superstructure will be very much a dead eye reckoning guestimate of the type 24. I'm trying to keep this as simple as possible,though closer to the drawings than GG got. On the Paladin,the anti-ship missiles are on the foredeck,rather than abaft the funnel,which sits amidships,rather that bolted onto the hanger.
Does anyone have an idea as to what the structure forward of the funnel is supposed to be?

The structure with the radar dish on the front is the director for the gun
On my last ship I had the dubious pleasure of being harnessed to the top
of one with a 35mm movie camera with a 1000mm lens to photograph
the shell bursts around the aerial target.
The director tracks the target for the gun and the movement can get quite
violent. It's also rather noisy!

H ya there, By you are getting on quick and really well with this :-)) Looking good!!!!
If you are referring to the structure which has a cross on the side, that (I believe) are air intakes for the gas turbines - these are much similar to those which the Type 21 frigate had when she was first designed - owld hen coupes - as my dear old dad used to call them :-)

First test sail,to see how she performs. She's not finished yet,and I'm going to add more lead ballast to her,as she's riding too high. I'll be dropping her down to a 25mm prop,as with the 30mm,the motor's getting far too hot. I think that a 7.2V battery,though providing good ballast,is just too high in voltage for this set-up. I'm going to try her out using 4.8V,just like the corvette,and see what happens. Anyway,here's the vid.

Some up to date pics of her,she's getting there,but not quite finished yet. The helicopter on the flightdeck is actually a Transformer model, as I couldn't find anything appropriate for her,not in scale anyway. I can always say,that the transport chopper dropped in for a visit.
It'll do until I can find something more appropriate. The chopper has been drilled and tapped M3,and is bolted down onto the deck. It makes quite a good handle to allow me access to the rudder compartment.

WOOOOWWWW....a nice work indeed....oh god..its nice....Sir..may i clear one doubt with you...? i saw a piece of red material,between the motor and final shaft.will you tell me what kind of material is this...i always use a piece of refill tubes found in ball point pens.but it will slips off when motor heats up...will you help me...

Certainly,it's small bore nitro fuel line,of the type that's used in nitro R/C cars.It works well in light load situations,but it does slip under heavier loads,or if as you've found out,when the motor gets too hot. Hope that helps a bit. :-))

Ohh..thanks..its clear now...and one more doubt...in your model,which is that motor..?(400,380,580..?)...if so how much is the voltage...?..means battery packs..? will you please...

The motor is a 380,though the 385 would have been the better choice.I have it set up to run on 4.8V,powering a 30mm 3-bladed plastic prop,or a 25mm one if you feel that the speed is too great.
The plan called for the use of a 7.2V stickpack,but when I tried that out,I found that with a 380 motor,the boat was overpowered,so I dropped the voltage. Even with the reduced voltage packs,I still get over an hours sailing time from the pack.
