Title: Severn class Lifeboat help
Post by: Nick on June 30, 2010, 07:36:14 pm
Hi Chaps

I need some information on the Severn class Lifeboat please.

I need some close up photo's of the Bow Thruster. Its the bulge around the Bow Thruster that Im having problems with. I've seen a few models made and the bulge around the Bow Thruster all seem to be different.

Also
I need the correct RNLI paint code and name for the Blue of the Hull and what Red do you use for below the waterline?

Many thanks in advance
Nick

Hi Alan

Thank you very much for the photo, your a star. :-))
That gives me a lot of help in shapping the bulge. I wonder if I could be a pain and ask for the other half of the bulge, the bit nearest the bow, its just out of picture. Would you have any other photo's?

Many thanks again
Nick

Hi nick,

There is only a bulge in front of the bow thruster. It is there to deflect the flow of water so as to prevent drag created by the hole for the bow thruster. One important thing to note is that the back edge should be sharp this is to cause the water to brake away and clear the bow thruster hole. If you look on the gallery on www.lifeboats24-7.co.uk (http://www.lifeboats24-7.co.uk) there are some pics of Severn's out of the water.

Regards

John

Hi John

Thanks for the info and the Lifeboat website.  ;)
Yes, I understand what your saying about the back edge being sharp but most of the models I have seen don't seem to be sharp thats why I ask. Anyway I shall have a look at that website   %)

Many thanks

re paint , haveing sprayed several model lifeboats i often used automotive spray paints / colours ( as it also ment its not too difficult to touch them up ) orange ; - volkswagen brilliant orange ,  decks  rover tempest grey , vauxhall royal blue , and ford glacier white if it was a slipway launched boat  OR  red oxide primer & clear laqueer if your model was moored afloat !  the bonus with automotive paint is you are able to polish it  unlike humbrol type enamel which looses its shine when polished ( its gloss is only on its outer skin )  unfortunatly ive not got the codes for theses colours , but either halfords or a good paint factor will be able to help . jon

Sorry to to say not true, My 1/12th Severn is all painted in humbrol paint and is now 6 years old and is still as good as the day I painted it, you can polish it but you must use a good house hold polish like Mr Sheen

Peter - it appears that the leading  edge of the conical bow thruster tube protrudes further outboard of the hull & again in a smooth elliptical transition toward the bow

The degree of protrusion is simply to ensure that the trailing edge of the tube is not a hydrodynamical  >>:-( offending line...

All things being equal & without any water direction....these protrusions would actually create a lower water presssure within the tube.........I am sure you will get my drift  %)  .....Derek

Peter.
There's RNLI Station somewhere with photos of their Severn out of water for the refit, but can't remember which one-typical! {:-{  I'll have a trawl around the different websites while I'm off to try find it again, cheers, Dave. :-)) :-))

Thanks, Dave, anything you can come up with would be much appreciated. Tug Kenny built a 1/12 scale Severn, and his build log is on this forum. There's lots of info in that but, as they say (whoever they are  :} ) too much info is never enough  O0.

Hi Peter

I built a 1/12th Severn a couple of years ago and the instructions with the kit were sparse to say the least of it. Fortunately I discovered Phil Locke who was building a similar model from the same supplier at that time, and he gave a full description of the build on his website which is: www.philsrcmodels.co.uk. I found this to be a huge help with my build and without Phil's expertise I would have really been struggling.
I see that Phil now has brushless motors in his boat as opposed to the original 4x850 MFA's which weren't really adequate for the job.

Anyhow his site is well worth looking at and I'm sure will provide you with a lot of useful information.

Brian
