Title: Deans HMS Javelin build
Post by: DickyD on July 07, 2010, 06:48:40 pm
Started my HMS Javelin build today.

It is an old kit and drawing with an up to date instruction book so it will be like my HMS Amethyst build, interesting.

More as I go on.

Seem to have chopped a bit off in the photo, will make a better job next time.

Hi Pete (Klunk) before stating any odds, you don't happen to have some inside information do you?   %)

Today I made a rudder to replace the white metal one and fitted it.

I fitted the propshafts and the servo for the rudder.

Have still to make the A frames for the shafts.

I also drilled out loads of portholes. [picture to blurred to post].

yes, it was hot here as well today. I actually watched my paint drying. Most unusual.

Have now put in the motors and the rudder servo.

Have also put in some deck supports and bulkheads.

Have found with Deans kits that it is best to cut out the openings in the deck and to sort out the coamings before fixing the deck supports and internals to make sure you get the deck supports in the right place and make sure they don't obstruct anything.

I have already constructed the bottom of the superstructure to make sure it fits before cutting out the decks.

I have also put a strip of lead down the centre of the keel to act as ballast fixed with silicone.

Have now connected up the electrics and tested them and they work OK.

Fixed the deck and filled where necessary.

I have now started on the superstructure.

For those of you who have never done a Deans kit before, always check that every thing fits before you glue anything.
Always assume that every part will need trimming for it to fit.

The hull has now been painted and when the paint has cured the portholes can be epoxied. Really looking forward to that.

For all its faults I am enjoying this build as it makes me think.

Thought I'd better update this.

I have been doing the superstructure though none of it is fixed or cleaned up.

There is a lot of 0.5mm brass wire involved and some awkward soldering.

Detailing is awkward as the photos in the instruction book are very fuzzy, so I am having to trawl the net for photos.

Having said that I am really enjoying doing this kit as it keeps the old brain working.

Mr D, I have enjoyed watching you build Javelin -  but could you give me some info on the kit please,
as there is very little info on the Deans website.  I have made the last ship I served on ( HMS Juno F52)
and fancied doing the wartime Juno which was sunk off Crete. Because of her early demise and very busy
life before then there are few photographs of her but I believe she was only slightly altered from when
she was built.  I.E. I think she still had the tripod mast and I dont know what her armament was fitted.
1. Do you have any photos of her, and 2 what time period does the Javelin model represent
as she was one of two who survived the war she was uprated on several occasions

Thanks Geoff

Post by: DickyD on July 23, 2010, 12:46:14 pm
Hi Geoff the Deans Javelin is modeled on it's Pacific period.

Juno's armament : 3 twin 4.7s, 4 twin 20mm bofors, 1 4barrel 40mm pom pom, 2 sets 5 torpedo tubes.

Deans aren't to hot on details, you have to find a few things on the web.

Dicky,

Nice job you are doing there, perhaps I shall get mine done at some stage.

However, HMS Javelin did not serve in the Pacific though she did take part in the taking of Diego Suarez in May 1942, returning to the Med via Aden and Suez.

Here is her operational history if you don't already have it: http://www.hms-javelin.co.uk/

DickyD, thanks for the info and and the 1941 photograph - hadn't seen that one before and it confirms
she was hardly changed since she left Fairfields S.B. - I'm a very slow modeller just have to finish
my Deans conversion of Cadiz into Aisne A/D picket version - at the painting stage so it should only
be about a year or so

Thanks  Geoff

Thanks LB, thought you were dead, haven't heard from you for ages.

Yes I do have her service history.

I was going by Deans painting instructions which state that the colour scheme shown on their photo was the Pacific colour scheme. Should have known better. :embarrassed:

Hi Ned, yes she was my last ship.  I stood by her at VT at Woolston then did the 1st
commission when Captain Lygo was in command.  Went on as killick bunting and came off
acting Yeoman straight to civvy street as my first wife was seriously ill.  Really enjoyed
my time.

Have done some more today.
I have been fitting ladders, handrail and companionways.
I have also started on the lockers and hatches.
Have also done a little painting.

I am now waiting for a nice man from Deans to send me some more stanchions and handrails and also a CD of photos so I can get the detail right.

I received my stanchions and handrails from Deans.

The reason I needed these is because Deans don't supply enough in their kit to do the job. They supply 12 lengths and I actually needed 16 lengths.

The stanchions and handrails are now fixed along with the rest of the ladders, companionways and handrails.

I have fitted a load more fittings, still plenty to go though.

Most of the ship is now under primer now so I can start thinking about detailing.

A word of advice to anyone who is thinking of buying a Deans kit, it is well worth getting one of their CDs for the kit, its a great help if the instructions and drawings are a bit unclear, which mine were.

Nice one Richard, another most enjoyable build from the Densham boatyard, and I'll bet the 'ol brain cells are allready ticking over with consideration of build number 18!   ;)
Right then, as a member's signature states " the only stupid question is the one I didn't ask", well here goes - how, so early into your build, did you know how much lead to use and exactly where to place it? and please don't tell me it's telepathy  {-)
       Please keep the pics coming.

Hi Tony, I didnt know how much lead or where to put it, but I did know from my last build that I would need some, so I put a narrow strip down the keel. The rest will  be added where its needed once its in the test tank.

I am keeping not to bad thanks.

By my reckoning it took you about a month - thats the length on time it has taken me to wire up

Dicky, sorry I haven't replied - I must have missed your comment on the 5th.  Yes I knew you were not
well but I did not know what was wrong. You have to be very careful I suppose with the painting side of
modelling and filing and sanding.  I have just been looking at your SRCMBC web at your list of boats,
you could always have a change of direction and do something like HMS Victory all the rigging would keep
you busy for ages or drive you mad.  Also, you know the Hampshire area dont you, as we are renting a cottage
up the Meon valley (I havent been back since I left training at HMS Mercury  in 1963) but what I wanted to know
was which of the Museums in Pompey are the best to visit . I have heard the Explosion museum is very good
plus the RN musuem. SWMBO has promised me as many days as I need for the visits so I want to make sure
I dont miss anything nautical and worth seeing.  Any comments would be helpful.

Geoff,
I think the Explosions museum is only open on weekends as funding has been cut.
Might be worth a look on the website though.

Hi Shipmate - I think Sheila has already checked the museum website and it gave the opening hours
through the week - just in case website has not been updated will give them a ring as I had heard it was cutting
back or possibly closing altogether.

Apart from the Historic Dockyard at Pompey  http://www.historicdockyard.co.uk/

the Submarine Mueum at Gosport is well worth a visit.  http://www.rnsubmus.co.uk/

Thanks Dicky we are going to try to fit them all in. She has mentioned visiting some relative in Kent on the
way home and my first thought was "Chatham Historic dockyard" but I shall have to lead up to that very
gently or she might try some of her surgical skills on me without anaesthetic.
Have you decided on the next build yet.

Possibly Geoff, it could have an Australian background.

If you are down my way pop in for a cuppa.

Well you will have plenty to pick from if you are thinking past and present. I've  just had a look,
loads from us over the years plus U.S. and now German.
Thanks for the offer - if we are planning to get over towards the New forest I will pm you before
we come south - First week in September we are leaving here.

Title: Re: Deans HMS Javelin build maiden voyage.

At long last we had the maiden voyage.

With two 7.2v battery packs side by side in front of the motors she didnt need any more ballast.

Even though it was fairly windy she sailed well.

Hello Richard, she's a stunner! really looks superb on the water. How long and heavy is she?  was it a complex build - there's so much detail it really does look great, I like it a lot.  :-))

Hope your feeling a little better than the last time we spoke and that the good lady's knee is well on the mend.

                                              Kind regards, Tony.

Wife has had the knee op and is almost back to normal thanks.

Another fantastic build! And quick too! Even if I didnt have to work and have all that 'spare' time, I'd never get a build done so quick.

Deffo gets a  :-)) from me.
