Title: MY SECOND FLOWER CLASS BUILD.
Post by: DickyD on August 25, 2010, 07:07:27 pm
Having got bored stiff waiting for the hull for my next build to arrive from Oz I have decided to do another Revell Flower Class Corvette while I am waiting.

I got this from Barry at Westbournes who informed me he had bought up the remaining kits from the wholesaler which he is selling for £49.99 each.

I ordered it yesterday and it arrived today.

I have made a start by gluing the hull together and the withdrawal symptoms have nearly gone.

Will now have something to do tomorrow.

Hi Richard,
Well done my friend, taking on yet another task! No doubt it will be up to your usual high standard, for us lesser mortals to wonder at. Glad you're coming out of the doldrums, the old saying comes to mind, 'you can't keep a good man down'.

Best wishes, Danny

Do I detect a note of sarcasm Danny ?

Had to do something, my backside was starting to hurt where I was standing around scratching it all day.

Excellent! Looking forward to how you will go about this DickyD. It will good to see how an experienced modeller tackles this common 'first time' conversion and your build log will be a treasure for those of us doing this for the first time. So, please take lots of pictures and let us follow you along on every part of her build.

Are you planning on doing anything fancy like smoke or noise?
Title: Re: MY SECOND FLOWER CLASS BUILD.
Post by: DickyD on August 25, 2010, 08:57:51 pm
Nothing fancy, just an improvement on the last one ie brass stanchions and things that get broken at the lake.

The first one.

Not having a go at you Martin, just needed something to do and a warship kit for about £150.00 all in seemed ideal.

No sign of parts 1 and 2 yet I'm afraid.

Haven't done much today, only fabricated and fitted the rudder.

Unfortunately Deans Marines postman with my motor and prop shaft etc is not such a fast worker as Cornwall Model Boats postman with my adhesive and speed controller, so I am still stuck for the propshaft and motor etc.

Maybe tomorrow.

Still waiting for my running gear. Why do people send out recorded stuff 2nd class post ? No telling when I will get it.

I used a Stanley knife blade to scrape off the pattern of planking where there shouldn't be any.

As I said the rudder is fitted.

I have prepared the hull to receive the decks. The foredeck is fitted.

I intend to join the main deck to the forecastle deck so that I have plenty of access.

I have fixed coamings around the rear deck and cut an access hatch so i can get at tiller if necessary. This hatch is under the depth charges so I have had to make the racks so I can get the size of the hatch right

I have started to make up the main parts of the superstructure so that when I eventually get and install the running gear, I will be able to use the superstructure to help hold the decks together.

Sorry I missed your post. 6" is what you need otherwise a longer shaft will move motor, battery etc to far forward.

Running gear has now arrived and is installed, I have used:

Deans Marine Kyte motor and one of their double couplings and a 6" prop shaft with an oiler tube.

I have also painted the hull with the main colour and the anti fouling.

My next job will be to fix the portholes.

@DickyD: With your portholes are you going to use the kit ones with a bit of Epoxy behind them or do you have some other trick. When building mine and looking around on the interweb people seemed to think this is an issue? What did you do with your previous kit? Did you have any problems?

Jonny.

Hi Jonny on my last one I stuck them in with Plastic weld and then put a blob of Yab-a-Dab-a-Goo on the back of each one. No problems at all.

Not a hospital ship, HMS Campanula.

Rudder is right way up and yes it is a 240v plug attachment on the rudder post. Is it over powered do you think ?

Shouldn't you be doing your own build John ?

I think 240 v may just be a little too much for the Kestrel motor which you are putting in - how ya going to get a 240 v battery in that little flower model. :} :}

The build is now finished and is awaiting its maiden voyage.

This could possibly be my last build on the forum as I am getting to think that there are not enough boat builders here now but more than enough people who seem to have no interest in boats at all [ check out how many current builds ] plus too many people waiting to jump on you if they dont agree with what you say.

That's looking pretty good Dicky and an appropriate level of North Atlantic weathering to bring it to life.  I'm tempted to buy one of these kits just to have for the retirement fund as they do make into a lovely model and a straightforward job to RC it.

Looking forward to seeing how she performs on the water.

Hi Dicky, Another great model and in about a month too.  I am looking forward to seeing you build that Armidale hull.
I trust you will consider very carefully before leaving this forum -  it is people like you that helped people like me build better
models because of the wide knowledge you have about most things to do with this hobby of ours.  Hope to see you
building when you have got that puppy trained to leave the flowers in the garden.

Great looking Corvette DickyD! And you finished before me too!! Love the battered look, I hope to make mine look just as weathered looking.. :-))

As for possibly being your last build on here, well that would be a real shame. Your help and tips on my own Flower build have been so important that I fear to do anymore without your steady eye watching over it. I have also loved watching your other recent warship builds and would love to see your next one on here.

Thanks for the build Dicky, Great job, makes me regret selling mine few years back, which was also done as HMS.Campanula, and i have no photos of her,

maybe Revell will reissue the kit in a few years time.

Hi Dicky,

Reckon a few builders are too shy to put their efforts on display, it's a little bit like public speaking, some can some can't  <:( <:(.
Have followed your build and saved images for reference. O0 O0
I too am also looking forward to your build of the "Armidale". :-)) :-))

Sorry chaps, no more builds. I have been given a yellow card with no means to appeal so no more from me, I shall not be cancelling my membership of the forum as I want my builds and photos to help others where possible and if I were to go my photos would go with me. 18 builds is quite a lot. After all this time its a shame.

Smashing build  (as usual)     :-)) :-))

I notice from your pictures above that the Captain is leaving the Bridge.

Now you tell him to get right back up there and steer through all this.

to quote Dicky "after all this time it is a shame" Too right it is.  You could put up a list of good model builders
on this forum  and Dicky would be on it. Same goes for people prepared to share they extensive knowledge of how
to build, where to buy,  where to find out the info, and occasionally contraversial (but within bounds as far as I can see)
I hope he reconsiders.

hi ya mate Dicky, howway man, put your so'wester on, sail through it, remember moderators are only there to moderate themselves, cos they cant moderate anything else.

Instead of moderation, let's see some building from them  :-)) :-))

Please don't stop! I am new to the forum, and although I have been modelling in most forms RC and static for 28 of my 35 years, I have never really done boats. I have a couple of boats on the go now, a cabin cruiser that I have put proper radio in and it now goes very well, and a very nice looking plastic perkasa that I am going to convert to 3 motors and props with brushless, purely because I think the sound of 3 brushless motors will sound pretty good and maybe slightly like 3 turbines in some kind of way. I won't put up that as a build as it's only really a conversion of a ready made boat. However I great a massive ammount of inspiration from looking at the builds like yours and the few others of similar quality on here!

Please remember, there are many that will come here to look at a top class piece of modelling/engineering, and be inspired by it, but will not feel ready or able to post their own efforts on here. I know people would encourage, it's nothing to do with that, it's purely that I will wait till I am ready to show something I am proud of before posting a build!

As a newbie, I really don't understand whats going on with this forum at the moment? Can anyone explain? there seem to be a whole load of people throwing various toys out of various prams because they don't agree with some minutae of whats being said, whether it's grammar, or locations of people or real names? I don't get it. I have used the net for years, I even met my wife on the net in a chatroom 10 years ago before they were banned. The net is a place where you can meet people and judge them purely on how they speak, it breaks down all illusions and image, you have no idea of sex or race unless they say. Personally I have no problem with that. If people choose to state location or name, fine, if not I don't care.

Sorry, I am wondering a bit, basically the point is this, I don't know you, who you are, how old you are or anything else, but I know you can build a damn good boat, and this is a boat forum so it's all I need to know really.

Keep up the excellent work! please!

Matt (my real name)

Thanks guys. I have been reading for a while but tend to try not to post too much when new as no body knows me. I also try to keep myself under control as I am an opinionated so and so. But I am one for common sense! I always mean what I say too. There seems to be a few people around at the moment that need to be told that we do actually appreciate what they do, trouble is, a lot of the time it's the whingers that speak up more often.

I don't know what has been said as I tend to just read builds and grey boat builds in general.

I thoroughly enjoy your builds and am stunned by the speed with which you build and the beauty of the end result - especially when I have been looking at my Flower hull - HMS Freesia - for nearly 12 months now.

T'internet is a funny thing, because it's all played out in front of us we think it consists of everything we can see. There must be many more people like myself who do not comment but get tremendous pleasure and learn so much from the work of yourself and the others who post.

There will always be mouthy knobsticks who are discontent with their own lives and have to spoil those of others.

Rise above it sir, show them the contempt they deserve.

Hi Matt, Your perkasa:

"a very nice looking plastic perkasa that I am going to convert to 3 motors and props with brushless, purely because I think the sound of 3 brushless motors will sound pretty good and maybe slightly like 3 turbines in some kind of way. I won't put up that as a build as it's only really a conversion of a ready made boat."  :-))

The Perkasa is a real favourite on Mayhem and many of us would enjoy your brushless power project. I would love to see a pic or two. Mayhem threads can be started by any boat modeller, irregardless of ability or experience and are amongst some of the best. I hope you'll post a thread re. your conversion ideas...........  :-)

Thanks for that. I will put some pics up. I bought it a while back and have not got round to ordering any bits for it yet. I have only got as far as stripping all the superstructure off to allow more access than the silly little hole. As soon as I get my stuf together to start the build I will start a thread.I took it up to show mark as I am in newport, and he thought it would make an interesting conversion. First stop some prop shafts from him!

I don't usually build Models beyond 19 - 1914 mostly I build 17th and 18th century sailing vessels so I'm not sure of my ground here,  I see you have the code flag "W" on the funnel
was this a flotilla or squadron mark?
She's a super looking Little ship and you've done a grand job ... I did Two short trip's on Flowers in the 60's One was a weather ship the other was a Whale Catcher  ... Sorry to hear you are packing up as I enjoy your builds

Dicky,

Do you know what the difference is between your Snowberry and the USS Saucy kit.

Saucy is obtainable but not Snowberry???

Both are by Revell to 1:72 scale.

Thank you.
