Title: Disposing of LIPO
Post by: ooyah/2 on August 29, 2010, 05:52:34 pm
As I am new to fast electrics and Have blown a cell in a LIPO 3s by using too large a prop.
Question---- How and where do I dispose of the Battery, I have been told not to put it in a recycle dumpster as it could go on fire.

Now running a 26" x  1/12 scale Bluebird K7 on 7 x 3700 cells Nim and getting 30 mph + and I feel more at ease with the Nims.
Help please
George.

From what I gather the salt water soak method is not recommended now unless the cells are physically damaged.
Discharge it completely, (auto light bulbs work well) twist the leads together and throw it in the trash or recycle.

Nice looking boat, any video's?

Hi Tombsy ,
Thanks's for the info , will put a 12v bulb across it and discharge it.
Volt meter shows 8.04 v at present with a bulge on the shrink wrap.
At present I don't have any videos but hope to correct this shortly, I live North East of Glasgow on the Forth and Clyde canal so my mate with his camera will have a go soon and at the same time mark out a distance and get a more accurate speed.
I have some 20 sec grainy movies taken with my small digital camera which if you would like to see them you can P.M. me your e-mail address and I will post them on to you.
The K7 is a distraction from my steam exploits with a Flash Steamer you can see some pics on Steam R & D.

You could also remove the offending cell, and make a 2 cell pack, I put a hole in a single cell inadvertently which discharged that cell to zero.
Yesterday I disposed of a 4 Cell 5000 and speed controller

Here I am looking for it, no I did not find it {:-{

Hi Tomsby,
A 12 v auto bulb did the trick, ends are twisted and ready for the dump.

Nick,
Not too confident in removing the dud cell, too many wires that I don't know where they go.

Many thank's both of you for your help.

George.
