Title: Spreaders...required?

As predicted, the spreaders (plastic) on my TT Odyssey have started to snap off.  On a small boat of this size (about 20" LOA) are the really necessary or can I remove them and re-rig?

Don't think they serve any useful function.
Probably there to give a more "scale-like" appearance.
Have removed them from my Victoria and reduced the number of stays from 3 to 2 each side with no problems.
