Model Boat Mayhem

Hello to everyone. I'm strictly a warship modeller, having been involved with the Royal Navy as a civilian all my life - now retired. I have built Vic Smeeds Thornycroft MTB, Dean's Solebay, Revell's Snowberry (motorised of course), static models include Sergal's HMS President and HMS Racehorse and I have also built Trumpeter's Sovremenny. I am currently (for my sins) building Dean's HMS Nubian as its is a ship built in Portsmouth Dockyard where I served my apprenticeship. My problem is that I enjoy the build more than operating the r/c boats therefore they haven't been on the water much, that and the fact I'm about 15 miles from a decent pond, that being the Canoe Lake at Southsea where parking is not always easy. I hope to learn much from you modellers and if I can help others that would be a bonus. Bye for now.

I was in Portsmouth at the weekend visiting the historic dockyard. They have a small basin there, which is used for morring some small boats. Struck me it was a nice place to sail model boats, although not so good for submarines as it's salt water.

That's the Mast Pond. It is used for model boating dispalys at events but not otherwise available.

Looked pretty empty when i was down there, save for an old landing craft and few clinker built boats. What objections do the management of the dockyard have for not letting modellers use this pond?

Well, there are still some security considerations as it is part of a working naval dockyard but more practically, there is no nearby car parking except during special events. Incidentally, the boats you see are actually all preserved historic vessels so have a bit of respect! :-)) If you are in the area then the nearby Canoe Lake is a much better proposition with free car parking around the inland side - see pics of some of my boats there taken a couple of weeks ago.

i too use canoe lake ,most weekends and some evenings when the weather permits ! and its only two and a half miles from the historic dockyard ! ( i know this as i live just over the wall from the basin they use for the displays ) ok its salt water , its very corrosive , but if like most modellers who sail here you use either stainless steel OR brass fixings you shouldnt get too many problems . jon
