Hi leggolon, What are the hull dimensions of your Dumas PT. It's good to see another  PT build. (I'm assuming this boat is an Elco)  :}
Title: Re: PT
Post by: leggolon on September 20, 2010, 04:58:54 am
Yes this is an ELCO type PT as far as the hull dimensions go the length is 33nches and the beam is 9 inches  and the scale is approx 1/30.  This is the PT-109, Dumas Kit #1233.  This kit is an updated version from when it was first manufactured back in the 60's I believe.  Very happy with the upgrade.  Had the original a few years back, not a good quality kit.

Hi leggolon, the Dumas kits used to be available in the UK some years ago, although I got hold of a quite large American plastic kit which included running gear - single motor with a geared drive for twin shafts/props. It also had a screw down removeable deck. I cannot remember who manufactured it.
The early model Elco 80 features a lot in John Wayne's USN film 'They Were Expendable' and is a must see for Elco fans.  :-))

Post by: leggolon on September 20, 2010, 11:58:44 pm
That may have been " the Lindberg" kit.  They offerd a large plastic model of the PT 109 several years ago and I don,t know if it is still available.  And thanks for the tip on the movie.  I may have seen it many years ago but I don,t remember anything from it I'll have to see it again.  Keep posting I would like to see the finished masterpiece.  By the way Dumas has another PT boat (Higgens).  It has a length of 30 inches and a beam of 8 inches and comes with a plastic hull.  I,m sure you've seen it on their website.  I tried to pick one up from the hobby shop I work for but our suppliers were out of stock!

Installed the motor, rudder and running gear.  Will connect it all later.  Starting to build the cabins.  Plans and instructions are not to clear on the assembly and correct orientation of some of the parts.  It takes a good bit of studying the parts and plan to get it rite.

Built the aft gun tub railing.  Patience in soldering, not very easy to do.  Learned a useful tip, if you heat the brass up to almost a cherry red then dunk it in cold water it becomes very easy to bend.  But don't try to rebend it in the same spot because it breaks......

Hi leggolon.....we can see you are jig bending & jig soldering the ???? 1/16"brass wire.......& it is progressing well  :-))

However I suspect you are using a soldering iron........  >>:-( <*<

Could I suggest you consider one of those baby gas butane torches & a liquid soldering flux fluid...not a paste........

The soldering naturally still requires the jig setup....but produces a greatly improved smoothness in the actual soldered joint    O0
