Title: Chilean Miners
Post by: a3nige on October 12, 2010, 10:10:06 pm
Lets hope, as the time to start the rescue arrives, that alll will be well in Chile. I cannot imagine what those men & families have been through. Good luck to each and every one of them.

Well said Nige , we all can have a moan and grumble about things in our lives but none of us has had to survive 69-70 days 2000ft under ground with the only way out in a very snug cramped tube.

Lets hope they all get out without any further problems and get the medical attention they will all need ( along with a shed load of compensation from the mining company !! )

Don't know how true this is, but I read somewhere that during the drilling of the rescue shaft they hit an unknown gold seam and that compensation for the men was almost guaranteed.

Lets hope they all get out OK would be terrible if things went wrong at this stage.

I don't remember reading a news story that brought a lump to my throat before, but reading about the first four rescued certainly did..

With so little good news around, its really nice to know that good things can happen.  My hat goes off to the guys who went down to assist.  The miners needed fortitude, and plenty of it, but to actually go down there deliberately...........

Well said Footski!
I unintentionally stayed up all night watching the live coverage, absolutely captivating!
It was like watching the moon landings when I was a kid.

I actually cheered on the 2nd rescue (woke an annoyed Mrs Mayhem!) and yes, I did have a tear in my eye too.

The BBC commentator stated the the mine had previously closed twice for safety reasons but due to the souring copper prices,
it was reopened and the miners offered 20% over normal rates due to the poor safety record..... now comes the recriminations!

I tried to stay awake..

I will be interested to read the book when it comes out , and would like to see how they made 48 hrs worth of food last 17 days.
Intrigued to see one report stating that some of the miners were fed a set diet to enable them to loose weight to get in the tube..

Well done all who helped in the rescue.   :-))

Be difficult for Holywood to do a film of this one, although they seem to thrive on remakes. Seem to remember this scenario with a group trapped in some caves in Mexico set in the fifties, whipped up with the usual media hype (What's new). I think the result was NOT as todays outcome and the media chased off to their next sensation.

Surprised to see them having a wheel change on the torpedo after the fourth one came out though.

  Regards  Ian.

What a refreshing change from Afganistan where everyone seems to be bent on killing each other.

My goodness, you must be young Martin, I was married with 3 children by then {-)

The Chilean rescue has captivated the whole world, and is an amazing story. There were some very poignant scenes on Australian TV last night, with vision of the 2 Australian miners who spent 2 weeks 1km underground in the Beaconsfield, Tasmania, mine disaster of 2006, watching a telecast of the first Chilean miner being brought to the surface. Both of the big, tough men had tears running down their faces, obviously reliving their own experience.

The last report that I heard was that 24 men have now been brought up.

Peter.

It's a great outcome and with everything else that's going on in the world it's nice to see a positive story in the news for a change. Some of my work as firefighter has involved being in confined spaces but I can't imagine what they've all been through. A real human story of trial over adversity. It's a credit to everybody involved and I look forward to reading about it too...Dave  :-) :-)

Well done everyone fantastic outcome. As an aside I wonder how much time our primeminster would have spend at the mine had it happened here.

Don't be like that, for it was a deadly serious question. Having just spent some time in a packed hospital ward with a couple dozen other blokes, I can tell you that some aromas were not the most pleasant - mostly due to some of the poor saps being unable to use a toilet in the conventional way. Ergo, the smell eminating from the use those commode thingies was pretty ropey. On the basis of that, I couldn't help wondering how those chap managed when they were trapped half a mile underground - amid all that heat, to boot.
Each and every one of those miners must have suffered a pure living hell. And, thank God, they're all alive to tell the tale. REAL men in my book - not the type to resort to sending those stupid baton-weilding icons in my face just because I'd asked a question about normal bodily functions.

I read somewhere that they had over a kilometre of tunnel to roam about in and that a section was designated as a latrine area. Does that answer the question?

What about the bravery of the six guys that went down to assist, that could have been a one way trip. they are the real hero's.
