Thought provoking and obviously cheaper because its only a one way trip.
But how ethical would it be? Who or what type of person would volunteer for such a one way mission?

Send bankers. Lots and lots of bankers. Stretch the truth a bit and tell them of the vast bonuses when they get back.

The plans that I've seen discussed are not, strictly, "one way". They're more akin to "go, once we have methods to regularly supply you, and we'll develop the infrastructure needed to bring you back at some point in the future".
That's not , perhaps, any worse morally/psychologically than the original Tudor shipping to the States. Thousands went there with little belief that they'd ever return.
...And a part of me wonders whether dying of old age on Earth is any better than the same thing happening on Mars?

You'd've thought they may be more interested in the economic and environmental condition of the planet we live on first! Mind, by 2030 everything will be perfect I'm sure...

Not in this article it isnt. Yes, they'd send replenishment but there's clearly no plan to bring anyone back.
You are correct there have been suggested missions to do as you suggest. This one isnt one of those. Its one way.

Martin I think you need to ask for some of that grant because I feel that quite a few members on this Forum could discuss all the probabilities and technicalities of such a mission and in a few years time when all the research money has gone, will come to the same conclusion as the most eminent scientists... :}

Just put Wayne Rooney on board and nobody would care if the mission was a success or not, he'd just be out of the way. Not been too lucky with Mars though have we?? Dave.

I think a one way trip would go well, being on Mars every day helps you work rest and play!

One question that's worth asking- if somebody was willing to go to Mars alone it's a fair bet they're not the kind of person you'd go for a quick half with, would you then want to go and start a colony with said person after sitting for a couple of years in a spaceship? Bet they would be even more likeable!

I dont think the intention is to send someone on their jack as it were. Even if they liked being on their own they'd probably end up going crazy due to the isolation.

It's one thing emigrating (or being transported) to another continent and having to carve your own livelihood out of the soil...and quite another thing being completely dependent on a government-funded supply ship for the spare parts for your oxygen-making equipment. This seems so obviously an press tidbit idea floated by NASA Ames research centre to attract funding that I am disinclined to give it any further thought. But those of you with a literary turn of mind might recall C S Lewis's short story 'Ministering Angels' (The Magazine of Fantasy and Science-Fiction, January 1958), which deals with the impact on a long-term Mars expedition when the civil servants responsible for their supply decide that what the all-male astronaut team requires is access to 'ladies of easy virtue'...
