Title: Hi from a Clyde
Post by: Big Mark on February 08, 2007, 06:20:48 pm
Hi all
I am new to the boat building scene but purchased a CLyde Puffer kit about 12 months ago. We after an initial flurry of activity it went in the loft (life got in the way) but I am now focused on getting her on the water (looking for some support and motivation!)
I'post some pics to show where I'm up to by this weekend.
Any hoo Hi!

Well heres were I'm up to, decided to go with planking the deck rather than the drawn on boards from the kit.

Hi Mark,

Mayhem is building a MTF Puffer for me, maybe this link is usefull for you.

http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/Builds/Puffer_Jan/1ntro.htm

I must say that i never saw a Puffer with a planked middle-deck, it was usually made of steel.

We decided to use the printed decks of the kit.

Seems to be a crop of them about.....

I will try to put up some pics of mine. Just got the main deck frame done and the prop-shaft and motor in.

After Martin's fun drilling the hole for the prop shaft, I tried a wood bit rather than a HSS drill - no problems at all.

I am currently building a Mountfleet Ben Ain and I decided to plank the decks as I wasn't too keen on the overlays.

Here is a link to a build thread I have been putting together on another forum:

Well, I have just had my first disaster - misread the instructions and was misled by the drawings.

The frame that supports the foredeck is meant to be curved - mine isn't. It is in straight  :-[ :-[ :-[ >:( >:( >:(

Now I am trying to decide whether I can face pulling it out and redoing it or whether I will stick with a flat deck with a slopey edge. Anyone nothing will happen until next week

Here is the text how Martin did it... i stil think he even cant remember it, its to long ago  ;D

"Next the front deck supports. These are made of plastic and were glued in with 5 min epoxy for the first one and the second lamination superglued to the first. I had difficulty understanding where the position of these should be in relation to the bulwark to edge and after some thought these should follow the position of the strake on the outer hull (well that where ours went !)"

wombat   Can you not just bond strips on the top to give it the crown that you need?  and  Bunkerbarge Ive found that using 1/32nd or 1/64th ply toplank on then re fit to the model when finished. Peter

Possibly if I have the deck close to the edge of the hull than specified as the bow is the worng way

I think though it will not take long with the pullsaw to get the frame out and to mod it. The down side is that I will probably have to line the hull - I'm not sure I can face re-filling it again

If your like me it would drive me mad until I fixed it, these things tend to get on your nerves until you take the saw to it then you think "what was problem" >Peter
Title: Re: Hi from a Clyde
Post by: wombat on February 18, 2007, 08:53:44 am
Just had a quick go with the pull saw - it is going to be a swine to remove, I am coming round to the idea that the main deck will be flat with a curve in the gunwhales. It will make the cargo area cover simpler  ;D

Why would anyone want a curved deck anyhow - this is how it looks, I'm coming round to the idea.

Addendum - just took a saw to it - it is staying, and I now have a big hole in the hull to fix  >:(

I'm going to have a little session on my clyde today so I'll post some pics later.

The main-deck has to go upwards to the foredeck and to the hatch it has to be concave to be correct. But i am a little confused... are you talking about the foredeck or the maindeck?

Thats how Martin did it:

The top surface of the two outer 'longerons' of the frame needs lots of little saw cuts made in the top of them. this allows the frame to be bent upwards at each end making the deck SLIGHTLY concave (about a 6mm 'dip' in the middle). I Glued with 5 Min epoxy using lots of clamps.

Title: Re: Hi from a Clyde
Post by: wombat on February 18, 2007, 12:40:21 pm
Hi Mark,

The frame is supposed to be curved to run parallel to the curve in the gunwhale - mine doesn't, it is straight. But I am starting to think that the area around the hatchway will stay striaght - this will make the hatch easier to fabricate and then I will organise a curve up to the foredeck.

Alternatively I may just carry on the customisation and step up the fordeck similar to the aft deck.

First fix the hole  >:(

Title: Clyde Puffer ( Mountfleet - Highlander )
Post by: Martin (Admin) on February 18, 2007, 02:33:18 pm

Hi Tim,
It will be interesting to see what difference it makes in the long run.
Bradders did this bit of Jan's Puffer and we had long discussions about it... The top of the hatch is flat anyway so I'm not sure if it will make any difference except when yo look down the bulwarks along side the hatch.

The instructions are ambiguous and as with any parts of this kit many more pictures and diagram would help A LOT!!!
Never mind, Jan's Puffer is nearly finished and I'll publish the entire build on Mayhem.

Although the hatch is huge, you might also want to start thinking about battery layout at this stage.
A bath test might be order about now....

Keep up the work Tim...... you've got a long way to go. ;)

Wombat    Now that I have seen jans and now your I see what you mean. I would just take a "sharp " chisel to it ,if you do it carefully you should have no problem, I take it's somethink like ramin you have used that is quite hard, but it should come down ok .  I thought you where talking about the camber on the deck at first, but I'm not in to boatey terms like some of the old sea dogs on this site. Peter
Title: Re: Hi from a Clyde
Post by: Bunkerbarge on February 18, 2007, 11:19:52 pm
I would leave the longerons in place and add packing to them at either end to create the correctly shaped support.  Then you will need to add to the transverse beams to bring them up to the same level and you should get away with it relatively unscathed.

Make it your own mate, as long as your happy with the end result! I've always been a fan of doing things your own way.

I had a stinking head ache all day Sunday so did not touch my boat, hope to get some done during the week.

Keep us up to date...

Hi Mark,

Sorry about the delay - been stuck in Switzerland with work. Getting back to things on the Puffer and on the narrowboat......

Looking at the deck, I have sloped up some at the front to get enough height for the stem plate. I think I will leave the deck flat as it seems to be more in keeping with the "Cheap and Cheerful" design of the boat, rather than an elegantly sculpted deck.

The next stage is to start fitting out the hull

Hi Wobat
Good for you mate, build it as YOU want :)

Did a bit on my puffer today.
Front deck area planked, all wood die'd, front rig mounting set in and rear rail area repainted white.

Next is the rivet plates and suppots and painting the interior sides a matt red.

One quick question, I am going to run a torpedo 800 in this, should I look at using a gear box or run it direct
Title: Re: Hi from a Clyde
Post by: wombat on February 25, 2007, 07:27:03 pm
Hi Mark,

Well, I shall let the world judge when I get that far.

I have now got the decks sealed and painted - this is showing up the grain, so a good sand down and then a couple of coats should see me done.

I'm thinking of lining the visible parts of the hull with plasticard, though not sure I can face doing the planking over the deck as you have done...too much of a coward maybe  ;D

I will give you some piccies when I get that far.

I think no gearbox because of the noise. How much revs the torpede 800 does?

We use a slow rewing 555 Motor...

Nope, I have a 4 blade brass prop for the job ;)
Title: Re: Hi from a Clyde

I am using a Raboesch (sp?) 65mm four bladed brass prop - the supplied prop is bleurgh. To give them their due, the guys at Mountfleet said as much. When I got my hands on the prop in the kit, I found the blades a little flexible - far too easy to distort.

Have to ive the guys at Mountfleet their due
I could not find the referance pictures so one email and they were sent to me first class...
Then I could not find/lost some slotted wood from the kit.
One email and they have just replied saying they will send one straight out...
Cant ask for better than that

There is a Puffer by Model Slipway on ebay at the moment. The scale is 1/72 which comes out at 325 mm. A nice looking one designed by Dave Milbourn

Is this the one you are building, as it looks a bit small ?
