Title: Conspiracy? Did the Olympic sink? Not the Titanic!
Post by: john s 2 on January 08, 2011, 01:58:15 pm
It is on record that the Olymphic was hit and badly damaged by HMS Hawke. After patchwork at Southampton she steamed under
one engine back to Harland and Wolff.Being beyond repair. The white star company being cash strapped turned the Titanic into
the Olympic. Then to claim insurance sailed the Olympic as the Titanic Then the plan went wrong.

It has been disproved as utter rubbish - see other thread on the forum.

Conspiracy theorists love to keep bringing it up though unfortunately, it makes a good story so who cares about the facts.

Neither of those links worked for me. You dont suppose there is another reprint of Robin Gardiner`s 1998 book "Titanic, the ship that never sank" just been published ?  (ISBN 0-7110-2777-3) Ian Allen publisher, now send commission cheques to.... O0   A good read, if you like fiction. He also co-wrote "Riddle of the Titanic"  That name should be copyrighted !

Check out this Mayhem link for a start John. http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=26218.0

The swap theory came from a book published some years ago, one of the co authors subsequently said it wasn't true but the other one has been pushing a reprint hence the more recent publicity.

You can Google this ad infinitum if you have the time and have lost the will to live....

Have a read of this:
 http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=6r0_PKEE3dwC&printsec=frontcover&dq=titanic+conspiracy&source=bl&ots=HD4j8pIXFz&sig=6kkq2v4if-gY8WaAugQ562LV_pc&hl=en&ei=LZYoTczWGo27hAfujLH3AQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=11&ved=0CGQQ6AEwCg#v=onepage&q&f=false

Particularly the conclusions towards the end. Also note that much of the panelling of the Olympic was reclaimed when she was broken up and exists to this day. It bears the Olympic's yard number of 400. The Titanic's number was 401.

Pretty conclusive really.

And the German Navy sunk HMS Ark Royal half a dozen times in the early years of the war, of course, then they did. So maybe my answer isnt watertight, Just like the Titanic, Neat eh!
Suggest hunting down the offending iceberg and getting straight on to Channel Five, I feel another hour of peoples lives can be wasted when we should be building boats...

The Olympic has a great history,... Two world wars, and a confirmed submarine sinking...

Why would anyone want to take that away from her.  :((

Sorry Umi, but only one world war.."Old Reliable" as she was nicknamed was scrapped in 1935......4 years before the outbreak of the second one.

Hi Ned you are right - the White Swan hotel at Alnwick just up the road from me has the Ballroom done out with the wood panelling
and light fittings from the Olympic

TITANIC hit iceberg and sank!    OLYMPIC had long and successful career and was eventually scrapped!.

You simply cannot change ships and expect everyone involved to keep quiet!   Someone (probably hundreds or even thousands) of those involved would have blabbed pretty early on!

I have sailed in a number of ships that had duplicates built, but I could always tell the difference, because no two were exactly them same anyway!

The great publication Weekly World News once claimed, and had photographic evidence to back it up, that a double decker bus had been found on the moon. I feel they may have been trying to boost their circulation...it worked, I bought a copy. No mention of this Titanic/Olympic malarky though {-) {-)

To swear all the workers in the yard to secrecy for the rest of their lives, no. TheTitanic lies at the bottom of the sea.

When I first saw this story on TV (with Danny Wallace) I must admit I thought some of the stuff was interesting. Like the rumours of the coal fires and the fact that many of the crew that survived were all sworn to secrecy etc. But like all good conspiracy theories it is just a case of changing the facts to suit your argument. I personally thought it was a good hour of TV and at the end Danny did point out that he thought it was all bogus. Good fiction me thinks.

Just like JFK and the man on the moon. Some people like to believe the unbelievable.
