Title: Becker rudder
Post by: Eddy Matthews on February 25, 2007, 01:51:12 pm
Does anyone have any drawings to make a working Becker rudder?

I'm sure I've seen some on the web somewhere, but I'm "xxxxx" if I can find them now that I want em!!

Regards
Eddy

Hi Perhaps I'm thick!   What does a Becker rudder do? How is it different form other rudders?

A Becker rudder is a high lift type rudder which has a pivoted trailing edge flap.

This flap is rotated by a linked pin so the flap rotates twice the angle of the main rudder.  If you imagine the main rudder has rotated through 45 deg the flap is then at 90 deg so the thrust is coming from the rudder at right angles to the ship.

At small angles the effect of the flap is small but at large angles the effect is very dramatic making it a very effective peice of kit that requires no more than the operating pin at the top and a hinged flap.  I'll get a photo later.

Here's one, although this one is a Heinz rudder, Heinz and Becker being two of the main manufacturers of high lift type rudders.

and here's one hard over so you can see how the pin works.

Eddy,
The ol'guy that runs this forum at one time had a drawing of a 'Becker' on his web site.  It's been a while so it may have dissapeared.  If I can find the copy I stole I'll post it.  If I can't find it, that's about normal, oh well.

The distance between the rudder's pivot point and the 'becker's pin makes a huge difference in the amount of travel of the 'becker', or 'flap'.  So does the 'size' of the 'flap'.  There is definitely having 'too much' travel in the 'becker'!  'Too much' makes for a fantastic brake.  lol

Thanks guys, I think I've eventually got my head round this so I can make a working Becker rudder - It's actually a lot simpler that I was first imagining!
