Title: THE LOCH NESS DASH..CHARITY SAIL IN AID OF THE RNLI
Post by: nhp651 on January 27, 2011, 11:32:59 pm
Guys and gals,

As preliminary organisation has now  been made we, as a group ,can  give details of an event that I have wanted to do for some years, but have not, until now, had likeminded nutters to join in and make a dream come true.

On Saturday 2nd July, 2011 Dave Forrester (aka Nunber 6) Russel Procter (aka 6705Russell) , Mike Pendlebury ( aka Gribeauvil) and myself neil (nhp651) plan to sail  some "toy boats" the full length of Loch Ness [ 22.5 miles] in the Highlands of Scotland, from the south of the Loch to the northern end finishing  at Langend. This decision was made because of the prevailing winds coming from the north and west, and as such the models that we are going to sail will be very well equipped to take any reasonable weather that the highlands in July could throw at us.

We will be sailing three specially built 1:12 scale models of the Clyde class lifeboats, and these measure 71" LOA. The build logs for 70- 001 and 70- 003 can be seen in the lifeboat section on this site,  here:
http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=28564.msg281147#msg281147 (http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=28564.msg281147#msg281147)

and here,  http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=26813.0 (http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=26813.0)       and mine, should anyone be interested can be seen here.
  http://www.radiocontrolmodelboats.com/t721-clyde-class-70-lifeboat-build (http://www.radiocontrolmodelboats.com/t721-clyde-class-70-lifeboat-build)   Hopefully

Dave will be bringing a large lifeboat that he is working on at the moment to make up the flotilla of four lifeboats......would make a nice sight.

We all have  our own reasons for supporting our charities, and we four are no different. My life was saved from drowning as an 8 year old boy by a Fleetwood lifeboat man, and this is a debt that I can never repay, but I can but try.

We have now had written permission from the British Waterways Highland division to sail our models up Loch Ness ( usually a craft of 6' and over  has to be licenced ) and have been offered and accepted the help from Ian Milne of the  Loch Ness Sea Scouts who, for a very modest contribution to fuel, are attending with a 6.5 mtre RIB and their Loch cruiser for comfort breaks.

Also a very kind gentleman who owns a full size ex Rother Class lifeboat has said that he would be delighted to escort our flotilla up the loch if not working away on that date. His name is Alasdair McClean.

Scotland division RNLI based in Perth have said that they will lias with Loch Ness RNLI for their attendance on the day  call outs permitting, and press coverage and hopefully local TV coverage of some sort, to the North west is also being negotiated.

Not only will we be braving each other's company for a weekend, being stuck on a small boat for 6 hours but also the chance of glaring looks from a disgruntled NESSIE and midges that tend to hang around like a bad smell at that time of year.........SO WE WANT YOUR SUPPORT, AND PLENTY OF IT PLEASE.

To support our cause you can either send a cheque made out to the RNLI and dated 2nd July 2011,[pm any member for their postal address] or pledge on line at Justgiving.com at this link.

Hopefully the page to the link will be up and running within the next couple of days.

May I point out at this juncture that we as a group and singularly, will be meeting ALL out of pocket expenses from our own personal funds, AND NOT  from any pledges made. ALL money donated will 100% go to the RNLI

So if any of you are in the area of Loch Ness and would give half an hour of your time with an RNLI donation bucket at any of the well visited visitor centres around Loch Ness, then please get in touch....we sure could do with your collecting skills.

Cheers, on behalf of the team and thankyou for your support.

Neil.

I`m in that neck of the woods, count me in. You should contact the Tarlair Model Boat Club (Buckie) who would be interested I think, lots of deep sea fisherman and families in that area. There is a RNLI station there too.

We must stress that anyone wishing to attend the event will not be able take part in the sail, we only have access to a small escort Rib that  will only fit the four of us to run alongside the models but all are welcome to come along and support us and the RNLI..

Many thanks

According to Guinness the only world distance record recorded for a model boat was set in a 24 hour period on 4/5 May 2002 as below:

"A 1:32 scale model of the Type 42 Destroyer HMS Gloucester, built by Francis Macnaughton and piloted by Mike Watts and Paul Ellison (all UK), travelled a distance of 195.678 km (121.589 miles) in a 24-hour period at Bude Model Boat Festival, Cornwall, from 4–5 May 2002."

Tonight I get my "newer" computer installed.  The one I`m on now goes back to the skip from whence it came, still it lasted 5years since it came out of skip  :o!  Might be a bit slow to answer

Hiya,
in the old Metcalf Moulding's catalogue there is a reference to the 1/48 HMS Dumbarton Castle/Leeds Castle boats being used in an endurance event,

Quote:
Bury Metro Marine Modelling Society together with Abco(UK) built up two of these models for the first ever 24hr world record endurance event at Stevenage in June 1987, and after surviving incredible weather conditions both completed the full 24hrs, 'HMS Leeds Castle' covering 59.42 miles (C Class) and 'HMS Dumbarton Castle' covering 56.96 miles (Class A). In October 1987 Both models were awarded World Records in their respective Classes.

Both models were powered by Ford 12v 'Cortina' heater blower motors running on 12v.26amp.hr. sealed gel batteries, both were fitted with working navigation lights, interior lights and flood alarms.   Unquote.

Keith.

it's not the money you spend raising the amount, Duncan................you'd spend that on your hobby anyway, going to shows etc...........IT'S THE AWARENESS FOR THE CAUSE THAT YOU CREATE BY DOING SOMETHING DIFFERENT.

As for windermere....a far too busy lake, andthe national; parks will only allow model boat sailing within certain areas for safety...........and it's only a little piddler compared with NESSIE.

Just ignore it , if the anonymous well-wisher has not the guts to say who they are then they are nobody.. IMHO

My wife swam the English Channel in 1997 and raised 3k for Charity. To actually swim this with all the various costs, cost her £2k, probably more as this does not include the 2 years of training which led up the successful swim.
In the meantime the charities were actively being promoted in the public, which is what most Fund raising events are all about.. Awareness..
So if SWMBO gave the 2k it cost her to swim direct to the charity’s they would be down by 1k not to mention that she would not have personally achieved something which very few people have achieved.

Hair brained .. Yes most likely , but that is where the Fun and interest and publicity lies....  Good luck to you..

Totally agree with Long Build it is all about bringing awareness to the public of the charlity you are trying to help
I thought the letter you received was condescending and to a point offensive and best ignored.

We are already doing 23 miles  on Loch Ness !!  :-))

Any way how I spend MY money to raise some for someone else is MY business and nobody else's !!

How much does it cost to go parachuting or having a golf tournament as a fund raiser??  At least our way means that we also solve the technical issues involved which we can then use in our other boat builds. I have more fun solving problems and building boats than sailing them ( to me that's the boring bit!!).

Yes, I`ve never worked out how sponsoring someone to "cycle the Great Wall of China" or "trek up Mt. Kilimanjaro" helps as much as if there were no costs involved or tour companies getting paid and ALL of that money going to the charity direct.  I note that the anonymous writer didnt offer to support you or give advice since he claims to be a serious charity man.

The search took all of 30 seconds.

As for the postmark, maybe they posted it in the west midlands to aim to avoid detection, maybe they have relatives there etc. Strange how that stamp appears though.

I just had a chuckle to myself as well, last year I travelled 230 miles to display my lifeboats at Torbay lifeboat day and a whale of a time and raised a lot of money so if I want to travel to Loch Ness ( somewhere I have never been before)and have a cracking weekend with some very good friends then that to me is worth everything. I suspect the writer of the letter is someone who is very alone in his own little world, I pity him.....

I to pity this anonymous writer,
a few people are giving a great deal of themselves to help towards funding the RLNI, who give a hell of a lot of themselves to help others
who is he/she to criticise other peoples efforts. What a nerve.

What you lads are doing to raise funds for the RNLI is a great to you,and to modellers everywhere. I know I have placed a few jokey comments,(take note Russell !)but I admire you all, and only wish I had the skill to build boats as well as you all do.Instead, I BUY my models, and improve them where needed, and try to do my bit to raise some funds for the RNLI. As my local branch treasurer says, "EVERY contribution helps" so come on all you good people out there dig deep, and donate just a few spare coppers to the fund. GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL.

Well chaps and chappesses,

Two weeks today we will hopefully be half way up Loch Ness.

The boats are all well prepared, batteries charged bilge pumps primed and  tucker bags packed ready for our picknicks.

Russ will hopefully be sending back some photos on his i phone and if we have wi fi in the hotel, from his i pad so that anyone interested can keep in touch with what is going on.

We have confirmation that the Loch Ness Sea Scouts and RNLI will be in support of us, as well as Alasdair MacLean with his ex RNLI Rother class lifeboat and numerous press publications will be following our progress as long as they don't have bigger stories to carry at the time.

The RNLI are putting on two stalls at both start and finishing places ( Fort Augustus and Dochgarroch respectively ) and we have circulated the event with the help of the RNLI and Fort Augustus community council in the Inverness and Loch ness/ fort Augustus area, asking for both local and other support with a special request for model boaters in the area to come and join us in our arrival at Dochgarroch. So Please come and join us. Weather permitting we will also be crossing the loch to have a sail around the bay ar Dores, where there is a fine country pub...hopefully with a nice pint to set us on our way.

We will also be calling in at Urquhart Bay under the gaize of the Ruins of Urquhart Castle for a "pit stop" two thirds the way up Loch Ness.

Lets all just hope for nice calm weather.

As it is getting close now we as a team would please ask you all to dig deep in your pockets and either donate on line to theis worthwhile event in aid of the RNLI  at    http://www.justgiving.com/lochnessscalesail    or send a cheque to me made out to the RNLI ( please pm me for my home address ) and dated 02/07/2011. Please do not send cash to my address     and let us make this a donation to help equippe the lads and lasses of the RNLI with much needed lifesaving gear.

one last thing.......... I shall be sailing on 40 meg, frequencies : 40.665  and/or 40.715       (Am taking spares as a continguency) and would be most appreciative if anyone coming to sail on the day would keep those two frequencies free.

many thanks for your support

On behalf of the team, neil.

The thread was running as a general topic of chit chat conversation, nothing more, nothing less.

This topic is running as a notifier of an event.

Just as Wicksteed or any other topic now and then runs in various places at the same simultateous time, or are you going to take the autocratic descision to lock those as well.

No need to lock the thread, if this is the case then there should be at least a dozen or so threads that should of beemn locked off in the past, makes you wonder why we bother to raise money for charities....... >:-o

Hi you guys, I only started the 2nd thread to try and promote the sail in a more 'general' section of the forum, hoping that more people would notice, it is for charity after all.  {:-{

The RNLI are always keen to help us modellers out and we're just trying to give something back. We're here to support the RNLI after all and promote the great work they do every day, just my view anyway.

Time to get back to getting the fleet ready for the 2nd, not long to go now, Dave.  :police:

All went well and there are no leaks, result. She just about fits in the back of my Peugeot 406 estate. Hope to be doing a powered trial in a day or so's time, Dave.  :-))  :-))

Are you guys hugging the shore or going for a straight line (where possible) ? It looks awful deep in the middle, have you fitted extra bouyancy aids just in case? Bubble wrap, foam blocks etc. I appreciate that these big boats would take a lot of bouyancy to keep them afloat in case of disaster, but it would be an awful shame if you lost one of those fine looking models.
Title: Re: THE LOCH NESS DASH..CHARITY SAIL IN AID OF THE RNLI
Post by: nhp651 on June 28, 2011, 07:08:49 pm
mine certainly doesn't.don't thyinkk there's enough space to fit enough bouyancy to keep them afloat....we'll just have to pray for decent weather.
i know mine and russ's boat's are very well sealed decks, and would think mike's isalso..plenty of free board, and high deck combings with plenty of wash ports, bilge pumps that free a gallon every minute so hope this is enough.
the lads will take the guidance on course up the lock from the lads on the RNLI and Sea Scouts ribs, so hopefully won't get into too much trouble.

neil.

   Reminder what it's all about!

The build logs for 70- 001 and 70- 003 can be seen in the lifeboat section on this site, here    http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=28564.msg281168;boardseen#new     and here,  http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=26813.0       and mine, should anyone be intersted can be seen here.  http://www.radiocontrolmodelboats.com/t721-clyde-class-70-lifeboat-build   Hopefully  Dave will be bringing a large lifeboat that he is working on at the moment to make up the flotilla of four lifeboats......would make a nice sight.

Neil.

Here we go with some photos, from the beginning to the end. You'll have to remember I couldn't take any photos while sailing until we had to take Neil's boat out with an electrical problem. First photo's show the start point for the run at the Southern end of Loch Ness at Fort Augustus and the arrival of the modified ex-Rother Class Lifeboat the Mairi Bhan owned by Alasdair MacLean and assisted by his friends, the rest are of the run itself. The cruiser is the Muirtown Explorer owned and run by the Sea Scouts as is the RIB. Skipper of the cruiser is Ian Milne helped by the Sea Scouts, without the assistance of Alasdair, his friends, Ian and the Sea Scouts the run wouldn't have been possible. Many thanks to them for all their help along the way.

The further we progressed up the Loch though the stronger the swell and the headwind became. Mike then noticed his boat was sitting low in the water and on inspection (not easy from a bobbing up and down RIB) it was found to have quite an amount of water inside the hull. Russ's boat too had water inside, though not as much. With not knowing exactly where the water was coming in there was no other choice but to take them both out and head round to Urquat Bay and the moorings by Urquat Castle for running repairs and to empty the water out. Imagine how difficult it was to lift out the boats, each weighing over 50kg and some 6ft long from the RIB and trying to get them on the cruiser! Not an easy task when moored up in calm conditions, never mind on the Loch with some 700ft of water beneath you in the wind! Each of the 3 boats sustained damage in just being lifted out to fittings, super structures and propellers....

Running repairs at Urquat Bay, and some pictures of Urquat Castle. Mike's boat is being bailed out with a cup rather than the usual syringe!

After both Mike's and Russ's boats being emptied of water and both ok to continue we decided to continue. We were unable to sort the problem with Neil's boat so she had to be taken out of the run altogether unfortunately.
However the stop at Urquat Bay had taken longer than expected and the weather in the meantime had worsened. The bay itself was relatively sheltered but outside bay there was a considerable amount of headwind and the size of the swell and waves had also increased. It would be impossible to safely launch from here and expect the boats to remain afloat in the conditions. It was therefore decided to keep them on the cruiser Muirtown Explorer and try to find a sheltered area where they could be safely relaunched. This in the end proved fruitless as the conditions didn't ease at all, even the relative shelter of the Caledonian Canal would have been too much for them. Anyway tired but safe we all finally reached the finish point at Dochgarroch at around 5.30 after starting out at 9.30. We might not have done the length of the Loch but we can't control the weather, both Russ's and Mike's boats both had more than enough power to complete the run but not in those conditions. We did the best we could and raised funds and awareness for the RNLI along the way.

Special thanks from myself, Russ and his lad go to Malcolm and Pat Sonley of the Netherwood B&B just outside Fort Augustus who were able to put us up for the duration after we were unavoidably delayed on the Friday night and were unable to get to our original accommodation. Hi there, think the green light is just one of a couple of different coloured lights on the locks used to make it look pretty at night. It was just starting to go a bit darker when I took the photo so maybe it had turned itself on already, Dave.  :-))

great effort lads.....sorry I haven't been in rouch on the forum but one hour into the sail the hard drive on my computor packed up and left me totally blind except for texts from the lads up thewre......and at times the phone was too hot to hold next to my ears, lol.

I am down at the local public library typing this so probably won't be back on line for a day or so until I get the power unit back from a local repair shop.

Bu I can re iterate that from phone calls on saturday from different members of clubs and corporates that have collected for me, and excluding any that was collected from pubs and such in Fort augustus and Fleetwood the total SO FAR stands at around £2400, of which some will go to central RNLI funds and the other will go to the Loch Ness RNLI fumds..........and the lads might not have got to the end under their own steam, but the amount raised is a total sucess, and I for one AM B***** PROUD OF YOU GUYS.

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT.

Neil.

Thanks John, yes it was good fun but tiring! Yes the P165 & 164 are same type as Russ's HMS Exploit, RN Archer Class Training vessels, wouldn't mind one myself. They'd both come through the Caledonian Canal at Fort Augustus and were there for the night. I'll hopefully be down our little lake on Wednesday with my big tug, still not got round to sorting the Solent yet but it'll hopefully be done for Sunday. See you soon, Dave.  :-))

So the question is asked.......... "Has anyone in Oz got a boat big enough / suitable, to cross Sydney Harbour" ....... >>:-(

The shortest..... point to point is I believe approx 1.2 Km ...& just under the bridge
Problem is  ;D one day like a mill pond ....the next 1.2 m swell on 4.0 m sets

I did this daily boat trip from GI to Cockatoo for 98 days ....leave @ 0915...return @ 1350 when HMAS Paramatta was in refit

I would not suggest an under bridge crossing of model vesels would be a good plan...... :D %) .....Derek

Just spoke to Mike and it seems a crack as appeared in between two of the planks, most probably caused with the weight of the boat and moving/transporting to the Loch....

Thanks

After watching my wife's videos of the sail I think that the action of the boat in the head on sea is the cause of the plank springing loose.

Notice that the crew on 003  upper deck are still working away and not being sea sick !

If that was the "calm" bit of Loch Ness I think the models did extremely well to keep going for as long as they did,
a credit to the builders and 0 out of 10 for the met office.

The models all performed well, it was only the weather that was against us. The wind most of the time is blows from the South so that's why we chose to start at Fort Augustus. We couldn't change to the North end on the day as the support vessels, the Mairi Bahn and Muirtown Explorer were already in place. Just one of those things I guess. Dave.  :-)
