Title: Voith Schneider Tractor Tug
Post by: getemuphigh on January 28, 2011, 02:57:57 pm
Some pictures of the Tractor Tug I recently bought.

I have repainted to deck etc and will repaint the hull next.

Fitted my RC gear, 4 channel, although just using 3 to run.

Pictures taken at Kirkless MBC Wilton Park last Sunday, most of the pond was frozen but still plenty to have a go at.

Must of been this one for sale :D, I got it a couple of weeks ago, give a a bit of a paint to put my mark on it like you do...and added radio gear and some deck clutter and ropes etc, will do more as I go.

Poll (John) who sold it was very helpful and gave lots of good advice, great fella.

Thanks ray111,
John told me a good builder had originally made it from a kit.
I believe it is a Sirmar kitty hull kit and is still availble from "psships" who are now looking after the Sirmar products.
They have a web site
http://psships.com/page4a.html

and go to tugs at the top and you will see the R.M.A.S. Kitty there.

http://psships.com/page90.html

Your lastest project twin voith tug looks really good!

Any chance you could take a few pictures and either post them up our e-mail me them would be even better, as it would be a great help as I am going to make a new (and keep the oringianl one) upper deck / cabin structure etc and the pics would be fantastic to have of the kitty as it is now.
Cheers,
Peter.

I will try, but wont be that good.
She is 1 of the ex RMAS Triton Class water tractors.
If you google RMAS Kitty a few images are there.

Also try these:

A170    Kitty
A172      Lesley
A174    Lilah
A190           Joan
A199           Myrtle
A205           Norah

All the same class.

I thought tractor tugs had the voiths mounted a third of the way aft from the bow of the boat?  Might be wrong?

Hello

You are right Russ and I'm also suprised with this Voith units mounted under the stern of htug boat . All stern drive tug are with Azimuthal like Schottel, Aquamaster, Nigaata. I've seen only one stern drive with Voith she was a japanese test durin 60's or 70's.  But there is also voith mounted like that on river pusher

It was the case with the Thyssen II from Graupner (but not a harbor tug hull)

sorry about the pics but im not use to doing this.still learning.this is a new type of tug & it has the two voith units at the stern.ii think it is still being tested as there  is little information about it.there is no table under the units because of the hull shape.the table on conventional voith tugs is for drydocking purposes only.

Hello

John your are the happy owner of my dream when I was young (20 years ago)  Yep I was dreaming for a Thyssen at that time !  Now thanks to Graupner Voith i've built a Voith tractor tug then I've built my own Voith units !

Vincent, the Baut don'y have the Voith at stern as you suggest on your hull, in fact there are not a new and there is some tugs like that since more than a decade in Norway, Sweden (Bob, Bess, belos, Baut ...) and even in US with the Crowley Response Class

The name of this kind on Voith tractor tug is stern first or sked first tractor tug. Excepted the quite flat forward the underwater arrangement is very similar to any Voith with the propeller under the hull on the 1/3 forward and a sked on afterside.

Picture, info and GA of the Response

Russ

1/3 from the bow being the usual pivot point of a stern prop driven hull, guess that also applies to Voith units, so down to hull rather than propulsion maybe??
