Title: Dinosaurs survived the meteor!
Post by: justboatonic on January 28, 2011, 08:37:35 pm
New research suggest the dinos didnt die out at the time of the meteor thought to have impacted on what is now the Yucatan Pennisular. The meteor extinction theory is widely accepted as the cause of the dinos disapperance but others have challenged this theory.

Now, research on a dino bone has shown it to be 64 million years old, meaning it post dates the Yucatan meteor by nearly a million years!

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/dinosaurs/8288863/Dinosaurs-survived-for-at-least-700000-years-after-meteorite-collision.html

Many palaeontologists believe that all non-avian dinosaurs disappeared almost 66 million years ago - after debris from the meteorite blocked out the sun and caused extreme climate conditions, killing vegetation worldwide.

But new tests on a fossilised bone of a plant eating dinosaur discovered in New Mexico found that it was only 64.8 million years old - meaning that it was alive about 700,000 years after it was thought to have died.

Thing is, its speculation in the first place it was a meteor that wiped them out, well the majority, remember croc's and some other animals are still prehistoric in origin by barely evolving further over the past 60+ million years.

As always its best guess with the 'experts' in these area's we will never really know unless Einsteins theory of relativity, time travel and bending space, become reality and we can go back and see what really happened.

Until then, unless any real proof comes up, take it as a pinch of salt cos its most likely some young enthusiastic plonker trying to make a name for himself.

what the torygraph doesn't say is, that the older the piece for radio carbon dating is, the less accurate the reading, and once of such age, the degree of accuracy is actually plus or minus 4% of that age.........so yes it could have lived long after, but then again, it might have died long before the meteorite clash.

a case of bending the facts to suit your hypothesis.

as they say on fleet street.....don't let the facts get in the way of a good story. %)

Oh but they did!

'They believe if their new uranium-lead dating technique bears out on more fossil samples then the KT extinction paradigm and the end of the dinosaurs will have to be revised.'

So clearly they are saying the process needs to be repeated on more samples and if the results are consistent, then the extinction theory needs to be revisited.

If you read the article, you'll see that comment is a footnote by the torygraph. Therefore in no way are the research team saying as you propose, 'please increase my research budget........................' for the rather disingenuous reason you suggest.

Nah.... Dinosaurs were successful, if you believe Paleontologists,as group of species they lasted for 65 million years.... Mankind at this rate a 2-3 millon years tops :D
