Title: Thining varnish

Hi,

I have a model that has wooden planks which I would like to varnish.

I bought some yacht varnish but a couple of article mentioned thinning the varnish 1:4 to allow a better soak.

Can someone tell me what to use to thin the varnish down (white spirits?) and whether thinning it is advisable?

Also, I assume you can sand the varnish coats with very fine sandpaper between coats?

You can thin the first coat with white spirit as long as the varnish isn't acrylic.
Then apply full strength when the first coat has dried and been rubbed down with fine wet and dry paper.
Then rub down between coats and apply as many coats as you need to get the finish you require. :-))

Hello, thin with genuine turps, one varnish & three turps. give it a couple of coats with fine rubbing down between coats, increase to 50% for another two coats, rubbing down as before. Increase to 75%. continue as before, and then full strength for the final two coats. Takes time but it is worth it, works for me.  Nemesis
