And my latest build underway is the Mountfleet Models Coaster

So I'll tell you a bit about the Mountfleet Coaster......


It was a gift...... quite an expensive kit........£350

I've added a sound module and an Old Smokey (both from JJC Electronics) to add a bit extra when it sails. I am most impressed by the Old Smokey....I've never seen a smoke producer work as well as this one does.

Running gear is a Sun 555 motor with a Mtronik Viper speed controller.

First off, I replaced the kit propeller with a brass one ............. because I wasn't happy with the balancing of the white metal casting in the kit.

I would not consider this to be a kit for a beginner...... the instructions can be more confusing than revealing.

The hull required a bit of straightening by heating it with a hair drier and clamping between strips of timber.

But all in all it is building into a nice detailed model...... helped by the hundreds of castings included.

Great build - I'm only building the Mountfleet Puffer but now have bit of an appreciation of how good the kits are and how much work and effort they are to build!  ;D

Hi Picket,

looks cool - I am just starting a Mountfleet puffer - I am warming to the kit, though it was a bit of a culture shock after the Model SLipway Aziz - its got wood in it!!!!!

How was the moulding on the coaster - I have had to do a lot of carvin off lumps of epoxy - cos otherwise it would have looked like a reject from Dr Who  ;D ;D ;D. Serioulsyl though, not that bad but just a little too odd for me to disguise - my skills are not up to that. Best I could do was to paint it green and call it mould.

I am using an Old Smokey - though I was going to run it on 6V - the smoke seems a little thin on that voltage though, maybe I will have to up it a bit.

The moulding on the Coaster was a bit rough... it needed a fair amount of filling and filing

It also needed a bit of reshaping with the help of a hairdrier

Old Smokey runs pretty well on 6 volts but I would think it runs impressively on 12

I've been building the quarter deck and adding detail to the lifeboats... covering them with tarpaulins may be correct but the boats are too well moulded to hide

If my experence with the Mounfleet kit is typical I would suggest that you check, double check and check again before fitting parts to the model..... The plan for the coaster is not very well drawn and the instructions can actually be a hindrance :o

Having said that... it builds into a first rate model

I wish you many hours/days/weeks/months of modelling pleasure  :)

If you have the Mountfleet Sealight Puffer I would check the dimensions of the hull before you do anything else. Mine was about 5 - 6mm low all around the top, only realised after fitting the quarter deck and then thinking that don't look right. I have now built up all the edge with body filler, got about a months sanding to get it looking good, good job its cold and wet I can not do anything in the garden. the kit has a lot of fittings to give it great detail, but the quality of some leave a lot to be desired.

Thanks for the comments - it is the "Highlander" puffer I am building. I see what you mean - I have started on the ship's boat and have to remake the top side of the hull already - I ucut the plywood one and even with generous allowance, it just didn't fit. The main hull itself seems pretty good. I will know moew when I start the build proper
