Title: Marblehead rebuild
Post by: jabber on February 27, 2011, 08:38:08 am
Hello all.

I'm new to model boating having found an old Marblehead in a 2nd hand shop.  It is complete with all rigging, vane steering gear and sails.  That is the first problem as although I have managed to work out the rigging (mainly), the steering gear is an absolute mystery.  I've mounted it without problem, but there are so many adjustable points and interactive connections to the booms that I'm lost.

Does anybody know if there are any diagrams anywhere that could help?

I've managed to get the information on the Lassel vanes and sliding rig, but it seems to have about half the complexity of what I have in front of me.

My intention is to rework/replace/upgrade most of the rigging but I don't want to start until I have an idea of what it should be and how it goes together in the first place.

Any help gratefully received

Not Sure if this is the sort of Item your after or not but there is a plan in the july 2001  detailing these

Marine Modelling International July   2001   Braine & Vane Steering plan  (And is still available)

Description on the mag say Comprehensive desighns for different types of self steering gear..

I am sure you will get plenty of advice about them.

Just by looking at the boat it does not look like a Marblehead what size is the hull and shape on the keel it could either be an 'A'class with vane steering or a 36R.

It's 50.5" stem to stern; draught is approx 16" with slightly taperd keel , large lead bulb.  Stands 84" from base of keel to tip of mast.  Identifying it would be a help.
