I read in the paper yesterday that the Olympic size swimming pool will "Not be of any use in the coming Olympics.....as it is 50mm too short,...all that money for what,maybe they,ll let modellers in to sail there boats,..like what happens in Germany,

I don't think there was any intention to use it in the Olympics which are being held in London apart from the sailing which is at Portland.
Apparently it is long enough for Olympic training but only eight lanes wide instead of ten which means it was never designed for Olympic competition.

Yes it was built to be used/for the olympics :-)) ( thats where the money come from to build it, least thats how they suckered the money )

I was under the impression that it was London that bid for the Olympics, not Portsmouth.... Maybe just another Ferry Tale.

Goody goody!! Indoors sailing all-year-round at last. :D No more freezing our bollards off at Canoe Lake in mid Winter. :D
Only eight lanes wide and not the ten lane Olympic standard. But knowing our dozy council, the eight lanes will turn out to be cycle lanes ........ %)

will that mean we can only sail up &down in seperate lanes ? but at least if we need to rescue our models the water will be warm !

It worked for me just now but not originally. Nowhere does it say that the pool was intended to host the Olympics though, just that it was of Olympic size for training purposes which indeed it seems to be.
Why all the fuss?

your right why all the fuss , they spend millions of pounds on having olympic everything for a couple of weeks of use ! im sure the money wasted building these olypic villages could be better spent !

The link works for me now, too, but wouldn't when I first tried it. The story does state that the Portsmouth pool was never intended for Olympic competition, but is suitable for training. However, if it is not exactly to Olympic length, including the touch pads, no internationally recognised records could be set in it.
The cost of staging the Olympic games has blown beyond all reason, mainly because of each city's desire to better the previous games and stage "The best games ever". That honour belongs to Sydney 2000 :o %) {-)
