Been busy over the winter building this 1.5 m metre Gts Finnjet , it had its maiden voyage today which was very short indeed as his has a leak on the port stabiliser housing.
Paul.
-
Paul a really nice looking model - any more pics.

Love it, been watching the full size Baltic ferries for a few weeks on Tallinn and Helsinki port webcams. Great subjects for scale.
-
Hi Paul
Great build. Have you seen the 2 Finnjet web sites. I have done a working model of her in Finn Lines 1977 version 1:400 rc. My friend Paul has done her in 1:100 and that will be my next build. Love to see some more photo of her. Hope you get the leak fixed.
John
-
Excellent work there Paul - good to see another ferry take to the water (if only briefly at this time!!!!)
Good luck with fixing the leak!!!

Nice :-))very nice
-
Paul, has she been on the water again ? Is it a commercial hull or all scratch built ? Any build pics ?
-
Hi , I intend to re float her again on sunday and will post some pics , the hull was a deansmarine mercandian president hull ( modern car ferry) that I lenghtend by about 450mm , cut out the stern tube exit and fairing and altered the bow to a More rounded profile .
I have written an article with the build pics for Marine Modeling International magazine (MMI) so I cant really put to much on here at the moment , but I will definitely put on the pics of the proper maiden voyage.
Paul.
-
Interesting, will look forward to more pictures.
About the Mercandian President, I´ve found her on Loyalhanna´s site but not on Deans Marine? Perhaps you bought hull only and that´s possible even if they don´t have the kit anymore?
Hama.
-
Hi,
The Mercandian President was bought as a hull only from Ron Dean , it is a prototype hull at the moment and not listed , however he does have one finished on display in his showroom if ever you get to go to one of his open days.

HOLY COW :o :o :o
I was going to ask (whist watching the vid) whether it was a sound system or if the boat was actually powered by a jet engine turbine............
THEN YOU REMOVE THE SUPERSTRUCTURE AND THERE IT IS......IN ALL ITS GLORY!!!! A FULLY WORKING GAS TURBINE JET ENGINE!!!
Incredible!!!!!!!
Hats off to you Sir :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))
Carl
-
DAAAAng..!!!!
Does she do scale speed ..or do you have to hold her back.?
-
Thats the coolest thing I've seen! Wish I could see her sail.
Congratulations on a very spectacular model!
Hama
-
Wow ! Not only but also :o !!!! Brilliant O0
-
awesome :-)) cant wait to see a vid of it sailing
-
The ledgen has arisen from the ashes of Alang. That is so cool. Does the Gasturbine power the props or does it power an generator that power eletric motors.
John
-
Wow! I´m amazed.... COOL!! :-)) one of my long-living dreams proved to be actually plausible... :D
What is the turbine you are using? Tailor made or commercially avilable? How about the heat issues....? And transmission...?
Respect, Sir! :embarrassed:
- Mikko
-
What a beautiful model :-)) :-)) :-)) Having been overtaken hundreds of times in the Baltic by the original, your video had me shouting out loud in pleasure - much to the wife's concern :embarrassed:
I take my hat off to you sir O0

Hi Paul
Good to see a fellow modeller building a Finnjet, I buit a 1:100 scale Finnjet from scratch, mine is electrically powered although I have a Wren MW54 2 stage turbine in a MHZ No Mercy powerboat, pictures of my Finnjet, Turbine and No Mercy below.
I have given much thought to installing the turbine in a Finnjet but really feel that the heat issues at that scale are probably insurmountable, other issues would be floowing sufficient exhausts throug slae stacks and reducing the current 22,000 rpm output of the gearbox at full power.
What are you powering your model by?
Would be interesting in discussing the idea of Turbine installation in scale boats with anyone who has considered it?

Video link for test of Turbine, I think you would agree a difficult piece of kit to instal in a scale model!

Finally had the maiden voyage this morning, all went very well and It handles beautifully , a tight turning circle , good turn of speed - too much really and very manoeuvrable with the bow thruster.
The balance needs sorting out as it was a bit heavey in the stern even though I moved the batteries forwards as far as they would go , so I Will need to relocate forward some of the other items.
I have put a video of it on youtube think is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omvKTuV6QkE
Paul.
-
Impressive :o
-
So, the "turbine" is actually a smoke generator with a fan on it....? :embarrassed: Nice scam... {-)
-
Hi Paul
Nice to see her on the water. I like all the working extras on her you have. I see what you mean about beening a bit stern heavy as the duck tall was under water.
John
-
Nice work!
Do you have any pictures of how your stabilizers work? Are the on a gyro?
Would be good to arrange a meeting of pepole with model ferries, anyone interested?
-
Once again, the idea of a small 1/100th tug (or several) crosses my mind. :-)
Andy
-
I have contemplated the Yorkshireman in the sort of scale. It would fit in well with my north sea ferries and warships as a Falklands tribute.

Went to the south west model show yesterday and sailed the GTS Finnjet and the floating dock , It was very windy and a bit of a hand full in the wind but was able to keep control most of the time using the bow thruster, here are some pics of it docked.
Paul.
-
NICE! :-))
-
Just imagine showing up to New Brighton with that ;D
Excellent work, Nice EDF :-X

Well done Paul it looks really good.

This ferry looks as good in port as it dose on the open water.
-
Hi Paul - good to meet you on Saturday. Congratulations for braving the hurricane and getting her on the water. I took a fair few pictures myself and will post a few on here later....
Excellent dock too - atmospheric, detailed and functional with it.
Looking forward to reading the article in MMI soon,,,

Hi Paul
Finnjet looks great on the water and to see her in that model dock was the best. Cant wait to see her in the flesh.

I never noticed this thread before, here are some photos I took of it at the Southern Model Airshow this year, Dave. :-))

Lifeboatpaul, Hi, I have just found your piece on GTS Finnjet, I have allso read the article in (Marine Modelling International) I think that they really do not do you justice, After seeing it perform at (Mayhems Wicksteed model show) in November, it was wonderfull to Here it and see it sail . I throughly enjoyed the show but that piece of sailing made my day, I managed to video tape the complete demonstration in HD I think people would enjoy it. But i dont know how to upload it. and risk loosing other tape. I need some one to show me or i might be able to put it on a dvd. It came out well.

O dear,???? I should have said the (Warwickshire model boat show at Leamington Spa), Not Wickstead
