Title: Crimping Tool
Post by: shimsham on March 09, 2011, 08:28:33 pm
Thinking of getting a crimping tool but it seems a minefield out there with a variety of different ones anyone got any idea of which is suitable for our hobby.

Hi Colin

Just a standard ratchet crimper will do you, find your local electrical wholesaler and they will stock them, size range will be 1.5mm to 6mm cable..

For electrical fittings I use the Draper Ratchet tool.

a plain bog standard crimping tool is ok for what we need for modeling.
similar to this http://www.screwfix.com/prods/70036/Hand-Tools/Forge-Steel/Pliers-Cutters/Crimpers/Forge-Steel-Ratchet-Crimping-Tool (http://www.screwfix.com/prods/70036/Hand-Tools/Forge-Steel/Pliers-Cutters/Crimpers/Forge-Steel-Ratchet-Crimping-Tool)

I use them every other day in my job. and have I have 3,
1 I bought 8 years ago and still going strong it cost £12
the others were company issue the cheapest £98 and is a  <*< <*<

when you buy it make sure the jaws correctly interlock and the spring tension adjustment is not fully tightened up
(it should be about mid way to allow for the spring loosing tension over the years).

Just bought on of these, very good and does the job well on insulated crimps.

Uncle Albert...... :o unless your hobby ..... "which is suitable for our hobby" is consuming more than 20 amps @ 12 Vdc........why bother with a crimping tool?

Just soft solder the connections with the appropriate multi cored wire size conductors & connector components & insulation material.... O0 ..........

Some people will try to sell anything as a NEEDED  requirement...... with a badly crimped connection the result is a high resistance joint & at low voltages is a KILLER

 >>:-( <*< ....may a swell just go & boil the billy  & wait for the VOLTZ to turn up............ {-) Derek

That's the type I use too, and the Amazon price is a steal; my usual component supplier charges £11.95 plus VAT plus carriage for the same item.
Also found these guys for crimps - prices look a whole lot better than Craplins or RS. I'm off to do an inventory of what we need!
